Round 2: Jack “In Synch'” Hoyt VS High’flyin Shawn Grey

July 16th, 2011

13-year-old Jack Hoyt is one of the few Duelists known all over the tournament hall. Hoyt has won 14 Dragon Duels including last year’s World Championship Qualifier Dragon Duel, and lots of Dragon Duelists aspire to be the next Jack Hoyt. But Grey is no stranger to the tournament scene either. He’s a veteran WCQ competitor, competing in his fourth World Championship Qualifier tournament this weekend! Hoyt is running Tengu Synchro, a popular Deck in this weekend’s tournament, and Grey is playing a Blackwing Deck that uses Genex Ally Crusher.

Hoyt opened up Duel 1 with Monster Reborn, Limit Reverse, Torrential Tribute, Call of the Haunted, and 2 copies of Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter. He Set Ryko along with Limit Reverse and Torrential Tribute before ending his first turn.

Grey activated Pot of Duality to begin his first turn, revealing Blackwing – Blizzard the Far North, Blackwing – Shura the Blue Flame, and Book of Moon from the top of his Deck. He added Shura to his hand and shuffled the other 2 cards back into his Deck. He Set a monster along with 3 cards to his back row before ending his turn.

Hoyt drew Effect Veiler next turn. He Flip Summoned Ryko and activated its effect to destroy Grey’s face-down Solemn Warning. Next, he sent Reborn Tengu, Debris Dragon, and Dandylion from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard with Ryko’s effect. Dandylion’s effect activated, and Hoyt Special Summoned 2 Fluff Tokens in Defense Position. Hoyt attacked Grey’s face-down monster with Ryko in the Battle Phase: it was Genex Ally Crusher! Crusher has 2000 DEF, so Hoyt lost 1800 Life Points in the battle.

Grey Normal Summoned Blackwing – Shura the Blue Flame next turn. He used his Crusher’s effect to try to destroy Hoyt’s face-down Torrential Tribute, and when Hoyt tried to Chain it, Grey flipped Solemn Judgment and paid 4000 Life Points to negate the Torrential Tribute! Grey tried to enter his Battle Phase, but Hoyt stopped him in Main Phase 1 to discard Effect Veiler from his hand and negate Shura’s effect. In Grey’s Battle Phase, Shura attacked Ryko, sending it to the Graveyard and inflicting 1600 points of damage to Hoyt.

Hoyt drew Pot of Duality. He flipped Limit Reverse to Special Summon Dandylion from his Graveyard, then activated Monster Reborn to Special Summon Debris Dragon. When it hit the field, Grey was forced to flip Torrential Tribute in order to avoid being hit by Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier! Hoyt’s 2 Fluff Tokens, Debris Dragon, and Dandylion were destroyed, and Grey lost his Shura and Crusher. Hoyt Set Ryko and Call of the Haunted before ending his turn.

Grey Normal Summoned Blackwing – Bora the Spear next turn. He attacked Hoyt’s Fluff Token with Bora, destroying it in battle and dropping Hoyt down to 2900 Life Points. Grey Set a card to his back row before passing.

Hoyt drew Effect Veiler. He Flip Summoned Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter and used its effect to target Grey’s face-down Icarus Attack. Grey Chained Icarus Attack to destroy Hoyt’s Ryko and face-down Call of the Haunted, and Hoyt Chained Call of the Haunted to Special Summon Tengu to the field. Icarus Attack resolved to destroy Ryko and Call of the Haunted, and Hoyt sent Lonefire Blossom, Mystical Space Typhoon, and Caius the Shadow Monarch from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard with Ryko’s effect. Then Hoyt Special Summoned another Reborn Tengu from his Deck, since his first Tengu was destroyed when Call of the Haunted hit the Graveyard. Hoyt Normal Summoned Effect Veiler next, and Tuned it with Reborn Tengu to Synchro Summon T.G. Hyper Librarian. Hoyt Special Summoned another Tengu from his Deck when his first Tengu left the field, and then direct attacks from Hyper Librarian and Tengu wiped out Grey’s 4000 Life Points!
