Round 7: 31st Century Brandon Miotke VS Justin Reyes “Maximus”
13-year-old Brandon Miotke got second place in last year’s WCQ Dragon Duel Championship, losing to Jack Hoyt in the final round. Now, he’s 5-1 with his X-Saber Deck in the WCQ Main Event, and facing off against Justin Reyes – a Duelist who made it to the Top 16 of YCS Toronto with X-Sabers. Miotke is running a T.G. Plant Deck in today’s tournament, and he’s facing off against Justin Reyes’s Gladiator Beasts. This may be a tough Match for Miotke, since Reyes can remove Miotke’s T.G. monsters with the effect of Gladiator Beast Retiari to prevent their effects from activating in the End Phase.
Reyes started off Duel 1 by Summoning Gladiator Beast Darius to the field and Setting 3 cards to his back row.
Miotke opened up with One for One, Enemy Controller, Pot of Avarice, Mystical Space Typhoon, Glow-Up Bulb, and T.G. Striker. He activated Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Reyes’s face-down Seven Tools of the Bandit, then Special Summoned T.G. Striker from his hand. Next, he Normal Summoned Glow-Up Bulb. Miotke activated Enemy Controller next, Tributing his Glow-Up Bulb in order to take control of Darius. Miotke Tuned Striker with Darius after that, in an attempt to Synchro Summon Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier; but Reyes flipped Solemn Warning and paid 2000 Life Points to negate Brionac’s Summon! Miotke ended his turn with a clear field.
Reyes Summoned Gladiator Beast Equeste next turn and attacked directly with it. Miotke fell to 6400 Life Points, and at the end of the Battle Phase, Reyes tagged out his Equeste in order to Special Summon Gladiator Beast Retiari from his Deck. He used Retiari’s effect to remove Glow-Up Bulb from Miotke’s Graveyard and then ended his turn.
Miotke drew Foolish Burial and passed.
Reyes activated Gladiator Proving Ground next turn. He searched his Deck for a copy of Gladiator Beast Darius to add to his hand with its effect, then Summoned Darius to the field. Retiari and Darius attacked directly, dropping Miotke down to 3500 Life Points, and at the end of the Battle Phase, Reyes tagged out his 2 monsters – he swapped in Equeste in place of Retiari, allowing him to return Darius from his Graveyard to his hand, and tagged in Retiari to take the place of Darius, using Retiari’s effect to remove T.G. Striker from Miotke’s Graveyard.
Miotke drew Reborn Tengu next turn. He activated Foolish Burial to send Dandylion from his Deck to his Graveyard, and used Dandylion’s effect to Special Summon 2 Fluff Tokens to the field. Reyes activated Monster Reborn next, allowing him to Special Summon T.G. Hyper Librarian from Miotke’s Graveyard. Reyes used his Librarian to attack Miotke’s Reborn Tengu, and then activated Forbidden Lance in the Damage Step! Reborn Tengu dropped down to 900 ATK, and Librarian’s 2400 ATK were just enough to make sure Miotke’s last 1500 Life Points were wiped out in the battle!
