Eight Duelists were left in this tournament, and in this Match we’d see Marcus Paternoster take his Hyperion Deck against Dalton Bousman’s Gravekeepers. Each Duelist was the last of their breed left: there were no other Hyperion or Gravekeeper Decks in the Top 8. This was a tough matchup for Paternoster, since Necrovalley could keep him from using some of his best effects.

Bousman opened the Match with a hand of Gravekeeper’s Recruiter, Gravekeeper’s Descendant, Necrovalley, Fiendish Chain, Dimensional Prison, and Royal Oppression. He activated Necrovalley and Set Recruiter, Oppression, Chain, and Prison.

Paternoster Summoned The Agent of Mystery – Earth, searching his Deck for The Agent of Creation – Venus. Pot of Duality revealed Forbidden Lance, Giant Trunade, and another Agent of Mystery – Earth; he added Trunade to his hand. A Set Spell / Trap finished the turn.

Bousman drew Dark Hole and Flip Summoned Recruiter. He Normal Summoned Descendant, and Tributed Recruiter for Desendant’s effect. Paternoster Chained Fiendish Chain to stop Descendant, then discarded Herald of Orange Light and The Agent of Miracles – Jupiter to negate Recruiter’s effect!

Paternoster activated Giant Trunade! He followed up with The Agent of Creation – Venus, paying a total of 1000 Life Points to Special Summon 2 Mystical Shine Balls from his Deck. He Tuned everything together for Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier, and banished Bousman’s on-field Descendant, his Dark Hole from his hand, and Recruiter from the Graveyard. Trishula attacked for 2700 Battle Damage, and Paternoster Set a card to his back row.

Bousman drew Solemn Warning. He activated Necrovalley, and Set the other 4 cards in his hand to his back row.

Paternoster attacked with Trishula, and Bousman removed it with Dimensional Prison. In Main Phase 2, Paternoster activated Pot of Duality, revealing Seven Tools of the Bandit, Mystical Space Typhoon, and Master Hyperion. He took Typhoon and shuffled the rest back into his Deck, setting 2 cards to his back row to finish out.

Bousman drew Gravekeeper’s Commandant and Summoned it, attacking into Mirror Force.

Paternoster activated another Pot of Duality! This one revealed Master Hyperion, The Agent of Mystery – Earth, and Dark Hole. Paternoster took The Agent of Mystery. He Summoned it, and grabbed another Agent of Creation – Venus from his Deck. The Agent of Mystery attacked.

Bousman drew Gravekeeper’s Spy and Set it.

Paternoster Summoned The Agent of Creation – Venus. He then chose to use its effect moments later, and Bousman didn’t use Oppression or Warning. Paternoster Special Summoned Mystical Shine Ball from his Deck. He flipped Mystical Space Typhoon, and destroyed Bousman’s Solemn Warning. “It was the one you kept touching every time I summoned,” explained Bousman. He then Tuned The Agent of Mystery and The Agent of Creation together to try and Synchro Summon Black Rose Dragon, and Bousman responded with Royal Oppression, negating the Summon and keeping his field secure.

Bousman drew Gravekeeper’s Recruiter. He Summoned it, and attacked for 1700 Battle Damage. Paternoster dropped to 4800 Life Points.

Paternoster Set a monster, and Set a Spell or Trap.

Bousman activated Pot of Duality: he revealed Thunder King Rai-Oh, Gravekeeper’s Spy, and Forbidden Lance, adding Lance to his hand. Bousman attacked with Recruiter, but smashed into Paternoster’s Set Honest! The attacked failed.

Paternoster Set a third Spell / Trap and ended.

Bousman drew Torrential Tribute. He Set both of his in-hand cards.

Paternoster passed.

Bousman drew Solemn Judgment and considered his moves. He took a moment, then Set Judgment.

Paternoster Set another monster, and Set a fourth Spell / Trap.

Bousman drew and Summoned Gravekeeper’s Descendant. Paternoster responded with Solemn Warning, and Bousman Chained Solemn Judgment. Paternoster Chained Seven Tools of the Bandit! The Duel now stood at 1800 Life Points to 1650, with Paternoster narrowly leading. Bousman Flip Summoned Gravekeeper’s Spy, and when Paternoster paid 800 Life Points for Royal Oppression, Bousman Chained his own Torrential Tribute! The field was cleared, and Bousman got another Recruiter with the effect of his destroyed copy.

Paternoster passed.

Bousman drew Gravekeeper’s Descendant, and Summoned Gravekeeper’s Recruiter to attack. Paternoster blocked with Fiendish Chain.

Paternoster Set a monster.

Bousman drew Gravekeeper’s Commandant and Summoned Descendant. He Tributed Recruiter to target Paternoster’s monster, and Paternoster conceded!

Marcus Paternoster comes out swinging with a Giant Trunade and Trishula in the early game, but Necrovalley and repeated destruction effects from Gravekeeper’s Descendant let Bousman battle back, letting him score the eventual win! The Match quickly moved to Duel 2.

Paternoster opened with The Agent of Mystery – Earth, getting The Agent of Creation – Venus from his Deck. He Set 3 cards to his Spell and Trap Card Zone.

Bousman had a hand of Effect Veiler, Gravekeeper’s Spy, Gravekeeper’s Recruiter, Dimensional Prison, Malevolent Catastrophe, and another Spy. He Set Spy and Catastrophe. Paternoster destroyed it in the End Phase with Mystical Space Typhoon.

Paternoster Summoned The Agent of Creation, and activated her effect twice to Special Summon 2 Mystical Shine Balls from his Deck. He Tuned everything together for Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier, and when he activated its effect, Bousman Chained the effect of Effect Veiler! But Paternoster Chained his own effect: Herald of Orange Light, discarding The Agent of Miracles – Jupiter! Bousman lost Gravekeeper’s Spy from his field, another Spy from his hand, and Veiler from his Graveyard. Paternoster made a direct attack with Trishula.

Bousman drew Seven Tools of the Bandit and Set Gravekeeper’s Recruiter, then Set Prison and Tools.

Paternoster Summoned another Agent of Creation! It attacked, destroying Recruiter, and Bousman got Gravekeeper’s Commandant from his Deck. Trishula attacked into Dimensional Prison, and Paternoster tried to negate Prison with Seven Tools! Bousman’s own Tools negated that, and Trishula was banished!

Bousman drew Gravekeeper’s Stele and discarded Commandant to get Necrovalley. He activated it, then activated Stele to return Recruiter and Commandant to his hand. He Summoned Recruiter, and attacked into Fiendish Chain.

Paternoster passed.

Bousman drew Solemn Judgment. He Summoned Commandant, attacked, and Paternoster beat him down with Honest! Bousman dropped to 2700 Life Points, and Commandant ws destroyed. Bousman Set Judgment.

Paternoster passed.

Bousman drew and Set a card to his back row. He shifted Recruiter to Defense Position.

Paternoster Summoned Thunder King Rai-Oh, and Set a Spell or Trap.

Bousman drew Gravekeeper’s Descendant and Summoned it, Tributing Recruiter to destroy Thunder King! Bousman used his Recruiter’s effect to get another Recruiter, then attacked with Descendant to destroy The Agent of Creation.

Paternoster activated Dark Hole, destroying Descendant.

Bousman drew Fossil Dyna Pachycephalo! He Summoned his Recruiter and attacked for 1700 Battle Damage, lowering Paternoster to 3900 Life Points.

Paternoster passed.

Bousman drew Fiendish Chain, and Summoned Fossil Dyna. He attacked for 1200 Battle Damage, then 1700 Battle Damage. Bousman Set Chain.

Paternoster Set a monster, and Set a card to his back row.

Bousman attacked with Gravekeeper’s Recruiter, and when Paternoster responded with Malevolent Catastrophe, Bousman negated it with Seven Tools of the Bandit! Paternoster conceded, and offered the handshake!

Dalton Bousman is headed to the Top 4 with Gravekeepers! Just four Duelists remained in the tournament.
