Round 2 Feature Match: Bobby Barone VS William Lockwood

September 17th, 2011

Bobby Barone is up against William Lockwood, taking an Elemental HERO Deck against Lockwood’s Gravekeepers: a rough matchup for Barone. Lockwood’s Deck packs enough defense to make trouble for the Hero strategy, and Barone has a number of cards in his Main Deck that just aren’t very useful against Gravekeepers. This one might become an uphill battle for Barone.

Lockwood started the Match with Necrovalley, and Special Summoned Malefic Stardust Dragon. He Set a monster.

Barone had a hand of Elemental HERO Heat; Super Polymerization; Reinforcement of the Army; Gemini Spark; Torrential Tribute; and Starlight Road. He activated Reinforcement to go get Elemental HERO Stratos from his Deck, and Normal Summoned it to search for Elemental HERO Neos Alius. He took a moment to read Malefic Stardust’s effect, then Set 3 cards to his back row.

Lockwood Flip Summoned Gravekeeper’s Spy, Special Summoning Gravekeeper’s Recruiter. When it hit the field, Barone flipped Torrential Tribute to destroy everything: Lockwood got another Recruiter from his Deck with the effect of his first copy, bringing his hand to 5 cards. He Normal Summoned the Recruiter; equipped it with Wonder Wand; and attacked for 2200 Battle Damage. In Main Phase 2 he sent Recruiter to the Graveyard for Wonder Wand’s effect; drew 2 cards; and got a third Recruiter from his Deck with the previous Recruiter’s ability. He Set a single Spell or Trap.

Barone drew Effect Veiler and Normal Summoned Alius: Lockwoood flipped Book of Moon to try and stop Alius’ attack, but Barone Tributed Alius for Gemini Spark, drawing Solemn Warning and destroying Necrovalley. He Set Warning.

Lockwood used Gravekeeper’s Commandant to get another Necrovalley next turn, then activated Pot of Duality, revealing Gravekeeper’s Commandant; Torrential Tribute; and Mirror Force from the top of his Deck. He opted to add Torrential to his hand, and shuffled the rest back into his Deck. Lockwood tried to Summon Recruiter, but Barone negated the attempt with Solemn Warning. Lockwood then Set 2 cards to his back row, and activated Necrovalley.

Barone drew E – Emergency Call, and activated it to get Elemental HERO Ice Edge from his Deck. He Summoned it, forcing Lockwood to activate Torrential Tribute to destroy it before it could use its effect.

Lockwood Summoned Gravekeeper’s Descendant and attacked, dropping Barone to 1800 Life Points. He Set another Spell or Trap.

Barone drew and Set Solemn Judgment, then Set HERO Heat.

Lockwood attacked with Descendant, and activated Compulsory Evacuation Device to try and bounce away the face-down Heat. Barone negated Compulsory with Solemn Judgment, and Heat was destroyed.

Barone drew Monster Reborn and Set Effect Veiler, clinging to life in the Duel.

Lockwood attacked with Descendant next turn to destroy Veiler.

Barone drew Dark Hole and activated it, destroying Descendant.

Lockwood Set a third Spell or Trap.

Barone drew Pot of Duality! He activated it, revealing Mask Change; Bottomless Trap Hole; and another Duality. He added Bottomless to his hand, shuffling the rest of his cards back and Setting Reborn and Bottomless.

Lockwood activated Gravekeeper’s Stele, retrieving Recruiter and Descendant from his Graveyard. He Summoned Recruiter; Barone responded with Bottomless Trap Hole; and Lockwood Chained Solemn Judgment, negating Bottomless and keeping his Recruiter on the field. A single attack later, and Lockwood had sealed the Duel! R2FMatch-Lockwood

A hand with mismatched cards like Super Polymerization and Starlight Road leaves Bobby Barone reeling, as William Lockwood just keeps pushing with monster after monster. Lockwood wins a decisive first Duel, and Barone is headed for his Side Deck. The second Duel began moments later.

Barone started with a hand of Pot of Duality; Reinforcement of the Army; Honest; Trap Dustshoot; Mind Crush; and Nobleman of Crossout. It was a huge hand that spelled big trouble for Lockwood. Barone activated Reinforcement to get Elemental HERO Stratos, and Normal Summoned it to search Elemental HERO Neos Alius. Pot of Duality got him Solemn Warning over another Alius and a Cyber Dragon, and he Set Warning, Dustshoot, and Mind Crush!

Lockwood drew for his turn and Barone hit him with Dustshoot: Lockwood had Mystical Space Typhoon; Wonder Wand; Gravekeeper’s Stele; Gravekeeper’s Spy; Gravekeeper’s Recruiter; and Gravekeeper’s Commandant. Barone sent Recruiter back to his opponent’s Deck, knowing he could banish Spy with Nobleman of Crossout. Lockwood used Commandant’s effect to get Necrovalley from his deck, and Barone made him discard it with Mind Crush. Lockwood blasted Solemn Warning with Mystical Space Typhoon and Set Spy.

Barone drew another Duality, activating it to reveal Mystical Space Typhoon; Bottomless Trap Hole; and Solemn Judgment. “That’s a lot of good cards,” he remarked, as he debated his pick. Barone knew Lockwood’s hand was Wonder Wand and Stele, so he chose Solemn Judgment. He then activated Nobleman, banishing Lockwood’s Spy from the field plus two more from his Deck, and Summoned Neos Alius. Both HERO monsters attacked directly, and Lockwood dropped to 4200 Life Points. Barone Set a card to his back row.

Lockwood drew Necrovalley and activated it, still holding Stele and Wonder Wand with no ability to use either. Barone drew another Alius next turn and Summoned it, attacking with all three monsters to take the Duel.

Trap Dustshoot and Mind Crush let Bobby Barone pick apart his opponent, forcing Lockwood to play into a waiting Nobleman of Crossout and alienating him from his remaining Spell Cards! The Match now stood at 1-all, and Lockwood would go first for the last Duel.R2FMatch-Barone

Lockwood started with Gravekeeper’s Commandant, pitching it to get Necrovalley from his Deck. He activated it, then Set a monster and Set 2 cards to his back row.

Barone’s hand was Cyber Dragon; E – Emergency Call; Mystical Space Typhoon; Nobleman of Crossout; Torrential Tribute; and Bottomless Trap Hole. He Special Summoned Cyber Dragon, then activated Nobleman to try and banish Lockwood’s Set monster. Lockwood briefly revealed his Set Solemn Judgment by mistake, then made his intended response, chaining Magic Drain. Barone discarded Mystical Space Typhoon to force the Nobleman through, banishing Gravekeeper’s Recruiter, then used Emergency Call to get Stratos from his Deck. He Summoned it to get Elemental HERO Ice Edge from his Deck, then attacked for 3900 Battle Damage. He Set Torrential and Bottomless.

Lockwood drew to 3 cards in hand and Set a monster.

Barone drew Solemn Warning, Setting it and ending without an attack. He wanted to see Lockwood play into the Warning.

Lockwood did not make that error, instead Setting a second monster.

Barone drew Dark Hole. He attacked into Gravekeeper’s Spy, set two turns prior, with Cyber Dragon. When Spy’s effect went off, Barone tried to negate it with Warning, and Lockwood activated Solemn Judgment. He Special Summoned Gravekeeper’s Recruiter, and Barone ended.

Lockwood Summoned Gravekeeper’s Descendant, Tributing Gravekeeper’s Recruiter for Descendant’s effect, and targeting Barone’s Bottomless Trap Hole. Barone Chained Bottomless to banish Descendant, and Lockwood got another Descendant from his Deck with Recruiter’s effect. He Flip Summoned Kinetic Soldier, and Barone responded with Torrential Tribute, clearing the field. Lockwood Set a single Spell or Trap.

Barone drew Elemental HERO Neos Alius and Summoned Ice Edge, attacking into Compulsory Evacuation Device: “I would’ve loved to have Mask Change for game here,” laughed Barone, who ended his turn.

Lockwood Summoned Gravekeeper’s Descendant, attacked, and ended.

Barone drew Solemn Judgment. He destroyed Descendant with Dark Hole, then attacked with Elemental HERO Neos Alius to drop Lockwood to 150 Life Points. He Set Judgment.

Lockwood Special Summoned Cyber Dragon. He activated Royal Tribute, and after some debate, Barone flipped Solemn Judgment, betting that Lockwood had topdecked the Tribute that turn and didn’t have another monster to beat him with if the Dragon cleared the way. Ice Edge next turn would be game if Barone was right. Sure enough, Lockwood only attacked with Cyber Dragon, dstroying Neos Alius. He didn’t Set anything to his back row. If Lockwood didn’t have Effect Veiler in hand as his last card, then Barone was about to win.

Barone drew Dimensional Prison; Summoned Ice Edge; took a deep breath, and used Ice Edge’s effect to make a direct attack to win the Match! Lockwood hadn’t realized that Ice Edge could attack directly, and after taking a moment to read the little HERO, he offered Barone the handshake!

A rough first Duel leads to a crushing victory in the second competition, and Bobby Barone scores a nailbiter of a finish in the third game, winning the Match with Elemental HERO Ice Edge!
