The Finals: Billy Brake VS Nicky Lacaille

September 18th, 2011

REMATCH! Earlier this year we saw these two Duelists face off in the Top 4 of YCS Charlotte.  There, an unbelievably lucky string of topdecks led to a huge comeback for Lacaille, who dealt Brake a crushing defeat.  Lacaille was victorious with Coelacanth OTK, demolishing Brake’s X-Sabers despite a XX-Saber Gottoms combo that left Lacaille with no hand.  Now, Brake had a chance to redeem himself.  If he could, he’d win his first-ever Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series title.

Lacaille started off the last Match of the day with The Agent of Mystery – Earth, getting The Agent of Creation – Venus from his Deck.

Brake had a hand of Dandylion; Call of the Haunted; Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning; Mind Control; Caius the Shadow Monarch; and Debris Dragon.  He Summoned Dandylion and activated Mind Control, taking Earth and Synchro Summoning Ally of Justice Catastor.  He Special Summoned 2 Fluff Tokens and attacked for 2200 Battle Damage, straight into Tragoedia!  Brake Set Call.

Lacaille blasted the Call with Mystical Space Typhoon, and Brake Chained it, bringing up Dandylion to Special Summon 2 more Fluff Tokens.  Lacaille Summoned another Earth, getting another Venus, and turned Tragoedia to Attack Position.  It attacked to destroy Catastor, and Earth destroyed a Fluff Token.  Lacaille made Tragoedia a Level 2 with its effect, then stacked it with Earth to Xyz Summon Gachi Gachi Gantetsu.
Finals-Lacaille
Brake drew Mystical Space Typhoon and Tributed a Fluff Token for Caius: Lacaille negated its effect with Effect Veiler.  Brake attacked Gachi Gachi to make it detach Tragoedia, and Brake Set Typhoon.

Lacaille destroyed it with his own Typhoon next turn, and Summoned Venus to Special Summon two Mystical Shine Balls.  Lacaille banished Tragoedia and Veiler to Summon Chaos Sorcerer; attacked to destroy the Fluff Tokens; then wound up making no direct attacks.

Brake Summoned Debris Dragon; Special Summoned Dandylion; and Synchro Summoned Black Rose Dragon to destroy everything on the field save Gachi Gachi.  He Special Summoned 2 Fluff Tokens and Set Torrential Tribute.

Lacaille drew to 3 cards in hand with Gachi Gachi on the field, and Summoned Tour Guide from the Underworld to Special Summon Sangan from his Deck. Sangan and Tour Guide destroyed the Fluff Tokens.

Brake drew Effect Veiler and Set it, holding Black Luster Soldier.

Lacaille Summoned another Tour Guide!  He Special Summoned another from his Deck, and Brake flipped Torrential Tribute!  He lost his Veiler; Lacaille lost five monsters total; and Lacaille got Effect Veiler from his Deck with Sangan.  He had 3 cards in hand: Venus, Veiler, and one unknown card.  Brake had Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning.

Brake drew Glow-Up Bulb and Set it.

Lacaille Summoned The Agent of Creation – Venus, and paid 500 Life Points for a Shine Ball in Defense Position.  Venus attacked to destroy Glow-Up Bulb.

Brake drew Monster Reborn!  The Duel stood at 4300 Life Points to 7200, with Brake leading.  Brake banished Veiler and Caius to Special Summon Black Luster Soldier, then attacked over Shine Ball and Venus for a total of 1400 Battle Damage.  Lacaille was down to 2900 Life Points.  “No outs,” shouted Brake, animated.  “No Hyperion!”
Finals-Brake
Lacaille activated Dark Hole to destroy Black Luster Soldier, then banished Venus to Special Summon Master Hyperon.  It attacked, and Lacaille ended.

Brake drew Reborn Tengu!  He Summoned it, then Special Summoned Glow-Up Bulb to Synchro Summon T.G. Hyper Librarian.  He Special Summoned Tengu, then Special Summoned Black Luster Soldier with Monster Reborn.  Lacaille hit it with Effect Veiler.  Brake attacked over Hyperion with Soldier, then attacked into Gorz with Reborn Tengu.  Hyper Librarian destroyed the Emissary of Darkness Token, and Brake grimaced, clearly flashing back to Lacaille’s massive comeback in Charlotte.  “Why can’t you ever just DIE, Nicky!?”

Lacaille drew Pot of Duality, revealing Effect Veiler, Hyperion, and Archlord Kristya – no help there!  Lacaille conceded and went straight for his Side Deck.  Brake was already using his, moving at the pace of a madman.  Billy Brake was clearly ready to win his first YCS title.

Lacaille started Duel 2 by Summoning The Agent of Mystery – Earth to get The Agent of Creation – Venus from his Deck.

Brake had Tour Guide from the Underworld; Heavy Storm; Dark Hole; Effect Veiler; Bottomless Trap Hole; and Thunder King Rai-Oh.  Brake destroyed Lacaille’s Bottomless Trap Hole with Heavy Storm, then Summoned Tour Guide from the Underworld to get Sangan. Sangan crashed into Earth to get Brake Maxx “C” from his Deck.  Brake didn’t attack with Tour Guide, but he Set Bottomless.

Lacaille Summoned Venus, but didn’t use her effect.  He ran over Tour Guide first, then paid 500 Life Points: Brake Chained the effect of Maxx “C”, drawing Reborn Tengu as Lacaille Special Summoned a Mystical Shine Ball.

Brake drew Enemy Controller.  He Summoned Tengu and attacked Venus, destroying her, and Lacaille Special Summoned Tragoedia.  Brake Tributed Tengu for Controller, taking Tragoedia in the Battle Phase, and Special Summoned another Tengu to attack over Shine Ball.  In Main Phase 2 Brake changed Tragoedia’s Level to 4, and stacked it with Tengu to Xyz Summon Steelswarm Roach!  “Come on!  Hyperion, Hyperion, and more dead cards!”  Brake grinned.

Lacaille Set a single Spell or Trap.

Brake drew Maxx “C” and attacked for 1900 Battle Damage with Roach.

Lacaille Summoned Earth, and Chained Torrential Tribute to destroy Earth and Roach.  He got another Venus from his Deck with Earth’s effect, going to 5 cards in hand.  Brake had 4 cards with Bottomless Trap Hole Set.  Lacaille ended.

Brake drew Leeching the Light!  He Summoned Thunder King and attacked, dropping Lacaille to 3600 Life Points, and Lacaille Special Summoned Gorz the Emissary of Darkness and a 1900 ATK Emissary of Darkness Token!

Lacaille turned Gorz to Attack Position, destroying Thunder King with an attack.

Brake drew Mind Control!  He still had that Veiler in hand, and could make a Level 8 Synchro Summon.  He took Gorz with Mind Control; Summoned Veiler; and Synchro Summoned Scrap Dragon!  He activated Leeching the Light to boost Scrap Dragon to 4700 ATK, and then destroyed his Bottomless Trap Hole and The Emissary of Darkness Token!  Lacaille took a moment to check his hand, and then looked up to meet Brake’s gaze.

Lacaille spoke: “You’ve won your first YCS.”

Lacaille offered an exuberantly-accepted handshake!  Billy Brake’s been Dueling since he was twelve years old, and now his nine-year quest has come to a close here in Toronto.  Billy Brake is your new Champion!
