Top 32 Feature Match: Sean Montague VS Paul Blair

Sean Montague was the 2010 World Championship Qualifier winner with X-Sabers when he competed in the World Championship that year. Now, after an 8-2 finish in the Swiss rounds of YCS Toronto, he’s made it to the Top 32! But Paul Blair, his friend from a local in Michigan, is hoping to stop Montague in his tracks and take his spot in the Top 16.

Montague opened up with Sangan, One for One, Monster Reborn, Book of Moon, Trap Dustshoot, and Call of the Haunted. He Set Sangan, Call of the Haunted, and Trap Dustshoot.

Blair drew a card and Montague flipped Trap Dustshoot, revealing Blair’s hand of Solemn Warning, One for One, Torrential Tribute, Thunder King Rai-Oh, Tour Guide From the Underworld, and Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning. Montague sent Thunder King Rai-Oh back to Blair’s Deck with the effect of Trap Dustshoot. Blair Normal Summoned Tour Guide in Main Phase 1 and used its effect to Special Summon Sangan form his Deck in Attack Position. Tour Guide attacked and destroyed Sangan, allowing Montague to grab Dandylion from his Deck with its effect. Sangan attacked directly next, dropping Montague down to 7000 Life Points.

Montague drew Pot of Duality next turn. He activated it, revealing Glow-Up Bulb, Solemn Judgment, and Reborn Tengu from the top of his Deck. He added the Solemn Judgment to his hand and shuffled the other 2 cards back into his Deck. Montague Set Solemn Judgment and Book of Moon before ending his turn.

Blair declared a direct attack with Tour Guide next turn, and Montague blocked it by activating Call of the Haunted to Special Summon Sangan in Attack Position. Blair recalled the attack and attacked Montague’s Sangan with his own Sangan instead, destroying them both. Both Duelists searched their Decks for Maxx “C” to add to their hands with the effects of their Sangans.

Montague drew Spore next turn and passed.

Blair attacked directly with Tour Guide on his next turn, dropping Montague to 6000 Life Points.

Montague drew Mystical Space Typhoon. He activated it to destroy Blair’s face-down Torrential Tribute and then ended his turn.

Blair attacked directly with Tour Guide again next turn, dropping Montague down to 5000 Life Points. He Set a card to his back row before passing.

Montague drew Effect Veiler next turn. He activated Monster Reborn to Special Summon Sangan in Attack Position and then crashed his Sangan into Blair’s Tour Guide to destroy them both. Montague searched his Deck for Tour Guide with the effect of Sangan. He Normal Summoned Tour Guide in Main Phase 2 and used its effect to Special Summon another Tour Guide from his Deck. Then he stacked his 2 Tour Guides to Xyz Summon Number 17: Leviathan Dragon, and detached a Tour Guide from it to give it 500 ATK.

Blair Normal Summoned Tour Guide next turn, but when he activated her effect, Montague discarded Effect Veiler from his hand to negate it.

Montague drew Pot of Avarice. He attacked Blair’s Tour Guide with Number 17: Leviathan Dragon, but his monster was destroyed by Blair’s Mirror Force. In Main Phase 2, Montague activated Pot of Avarice. He sent 2 Tour Guides, a Sangan, an Effect Veiler, and Leviathan Dragon back to his Deck to draw Dark Hole and Mind Control.

Blair Normal Summoned Effect Veiler and then Tuned it with Tour Guide to Summon Armory Arm. He banished Effect Veiler and Tour Guide from his Graveyard to Summon Chaos Sorcerer next. Then, he activated One for One, discarding Maxx “C”, and Montague pitched Maxx “C” from his hand to activate its effect. Blair Special Summoned Glow-Up Bulb from his Deck and Montague drew Card Trooper with the effect of Maxx “C”. Next, Blair Tuned Glow-Up Bulb with Chaos Sorcerer to Summon Arcanite Magician. Montague flipped Book of Moon to put Arcanite Magician face-down and drew Reborn Tengu from his Deck thanks to his Maxx “C”. Next, Blair Special Summoned Glow-Up Bulb from his Graveyard by sending Reborn Tengu from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard, and Montague drew Mystical Space Typhoon. Next, Blair Tuned Glow-Up Bulb with Armory Arm to Synchro Summon T.G. Hyper Librarian and Montague drew Solemn Warning from his Deck thanks to Maxx “C”. Blair attacked for 2400 points of damage, dropping Montague down to 2600 Life Points.

Montague drew Torrential Tribute next turn. He activated Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Blair’s face-down Solemn Warning, and then activated Dark Hole to destroy Blair’s T.G. Hyper Librarian and face-down Arcanite Magician. Next, he activated One for One by discarding Dandylion. He Special Summoned Glow-Up Bulb from his Deck and Special Summoned 2 Fluff Tokens with the effect of Dandylion. He Normal Summoned Reborn Tengu next, and Tuned it with Glow-Up Bulb to Summon T.G. Hyper Librarian. He used his Tengu’s effect to Special Summon another copy from his Deck. Next, he activated the effect of his Glow-Up Bulb. He Special Summoned it to the field and sent Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard. He Tuned Glow-Up Bulb with a Fluff Token to Summon Formula Synchron, allowing him to draw 2 cards from his Deck, and then Tuned Formula Synchron with his Tengu to Summon Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier and draw another card. Next, he discarded Spore from his hand to return his own back row to his hand. He banished Dandylion from his Graveyard to Special Summon Spore to the field as a Level 4 monster, then Tuned Spore with Reborn Tengu and a Fluff Token to Summon Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier! He drew Effect Veiler from his Deck with the effect of T.G. Hyper Librarian and banished Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning from Blair’s hand and Tengu from his Graveyard with the effect of Trishula. Montague attacked directly with Brionac, T.G. Hyper Librarian, and Trishula, dropping Blair down to 600 Life Points.

Blair drew to 2 cards in hand, with no field, against Montague’s 3 monsters, 4 back rows, and 5 cards in hand. Blair quickly conceded.

Sean Montague draws 4 cards off of the effect of Maxx “C” to build an insurmountable amount of resources, which he uses to defeat Paul Blair! Blair will be going first in Duel 2!

Blair started off Duel 2 by Summoning Reborn Tengu and ending his turn.

Sean Montague opened up with D.D. Crow, Torrential Tribute, Sangan, Dark Hole, Solemn Judgment, and Glow-Up Bulb. He Set Solemn Judgment and Torrential Tribute along with Sangan and ended his turn.

Blair Summoned Sangan and then attacked Montague’s Sangan with Tengu, destroying it in battle. Montague searched his Deck for Lonefire Blossom with the effect of Sangan. Sangan attacked directly next, dropping Montague down to 7000 Life Points.

Montague drew Effect Veiler next turn. He Normal Summoned Lonefire Blossom and Tributed it to Special Summon Dandylion from his Deck in Defense Position.

Blair attacked Dandylion with Tengu next turn, and Montague Special Summoned 2 Fluff Tokens. Blair destroyed 1 of them in battle with Sangan. He Set a card to his back row and passed.

Montague drew Solemn Warning next turn. He Summoned Glow-Up Bulb and Tuned it with a Token to Summon Formula Synchron and draw Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning. He Set Solemn Warning and passed, but lost Solemn Warning in his End Phase to Mystical Space Typhoon.

Blair attacked Formula Synchron with Tengu to destroy it, and then attacked directly with Sangan to drop Montague down to 6000 Life Points.

Montague activated the effect of his Glow-Up Bulb next, and Blair Chained D.D. Crow to banish the Glow-Up Bulb. Montague sent Gorz the Emissary of Darkness from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard with the effect of Glow-Up Bulb. Montague banished Gorz and Formula Synchron from his Graveyard to Special Summon Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning and activated its effect to try to banish Sangan; but Blair discarded Effect Veiler to negate it. Montague Tributed Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning for Caius the Shadow Monarch next, and used Caius’s effect to banish Sangan and deal 1000 points of damage to Blair. Montague attacked Tengu with Caius next, and Blair Special Summoned another from his Deck.

Blair Normal Summoned Tour Guide From the Underworld next turn, and Montague negated its effect with Effect Veiler. Blair followed up by activating Foolish Burial to send Glow-Up Bulb from his Deck to his Graveyard. He activated the effect of Glow-Up Bulb, and after Montague discarded D.D. Crow to banish Glow-Up Bulb from his Graveyard, Blair sent Debunk from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard.

Montague drew Pot of Duality next turn. He activated it to reveal Foolish Burial, Monster Reborn, and Thunder King Rai-Oh from the top of his Deck. He added Rai-Oh to his hand and shuffled the other 2 cards back into his Deck. Montague Summoned Rai-Oh. He entered his Battle Phase and attacked over Tour Guide with Caius. Next, he attacked and destroyed Tengu with Rai-Oh, dropping Blair down to 4700 Life Points and allowing Blair to Special Summon another Tengu from his Deck.

Blair Normal Summoned another Tour Guide next turn and activated her effect to Special Summon Tour Guide from his Deck. He stacked his 2 Tour Guides to try to Xyz Summon Leviair the Sea Dragon, but Montague sent his Rai-Oh to the Graveyard to negate its Summon. Next, Blair activated One for One by discarding D.D. Crow, and Montague flipped Solemn Judgment to negate the One for One.

Montague drew Tour Guide next turn and tried to Summon it, but lost out to Solemn Warning. Caius attacked and destroyed Tengu.

Blair had no cards in his hand or on the field and drew… Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning! He Special Summoned it and Montague flipped Torrential Tribute to clear the field!

Montague drew Trap Dustshoot next turn so that he had Trap Dustshoot and Dark Hole in hand. He Set the Dustshoot and passed.

Blair Set a back row and passed.

Montague drew Cyber Dragon and passed.

Blair drew Lonefire Blossom and Normal Summoned it. He Tributed it to Special Summon Dandylion in Defense Position and then passed.

Montague drew another Tour Guide next turn! He Special Summoned Cyber Dragon and then Normal Summoned Tour Guide. He activated Tour Guide’s effect to Special Summon another from his Deck and then attacked with Tour Guide; but Blair flipped Mirror Force, destroying all 3 of Montague’s monsters!

Blair drew a card and passed.

Montague drew Spore. He Set it and passed.

Blair Summoned Spore next turn and Tuned it with Dandylion to Summon Armory Arm. Then he banished Lonefire Blossom from his Graveyard to Special Summon Spore and Tuned Spore with Armory Arm and a Fluff Token to Synchro Summon Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier! Montague lost a Dark Hole from his hand and a Trap Dustshoot from the field. Then he attacked and destroyed Spore with Trishula.

Montague drew Maxx “C” next turn and Set it.

Blair attacked and destroyed Maxx “C” with Trishula.

Montague drew Foolish Burial and Set it. He banished Dandylion from his Graveyard to Special Summon Spore and then ended his turn.

Blair attacked and destroyed Spore next turn by using his Trishula.

Montague drew Cyber Dragon and Special Summoned it in Defense Position.

Blair drew Pot of Avarice and activated it. Montague instantly conceded, realizing it would be nearly impossible for him to mount a comeback against Blair’s growing advantage.

Paul Blair topdecks Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning and Mirror Force to turn Duel 2 around and take the victory! Sean Montague will be going first in Duel 3!

Montague opened up with Effect Veiler, Mind Control, Solemn Warning, Torrential Tribute, One for One, and D.D. Crow. He Set Solemn Warning and passed.

Blair Set 2 cards to his back row.

Montague drew Glow-Up Bulb and passed.

Blair tried to Summon Tour Guide From the Underworld, but lost it to Solemn Warning.

Montague Summoned his own Tour Guide and activated its effect to Special Summon Sangan from his Deck. He attacked directly with Tour Guide and Sangan, dropping Blair down to 6000 Life Points. Montague Set Torrential Tribute before passing.

Blair Set a card to his back row and Set a monster.

Montague drew Pot of Avarice and then activated Mind Control to take control of Blair’s face-down Spore. He Flip Summoned it and Tuned it with Tour Guide to Summon Armory Arm, but lost Armory Arm to Bottomless Trap Hole. Next, he attacked with Sangan, but had his attack blocked by Book of Moon.

Blair activated Nobleman of Crossout to banish Sangan, then Set 2 cards to his back row.

Montague activated One for One by discarding Glow-Up Bulb next turn, Special Summoning D.D. Crow from his Deck. Then he activated Glow-Up Bulb’s effect, sending Thunder King Rai-Oh from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard and Special Summoning the Bulb to the field. He Tuned Glow-Up Bulb with D.D. Crow to Summon Formula Synchron and draw a card. Montague Set Enemy Controller and passed.

Blair activated Foolish Burial to send Dandylion from his Deck to his Graveyard and Special Summon 2 Fluff Tokens to the field. Then he banished Dandylion from his Graveyard to attempt to Special Summon Spore, and Montague discarded D.D. Crow to try to banish Spore; but Blair Chained Call of the Haunted to Special Summon Spore in Attack Position. Montague couldn’t activate his Torrential Tribute! Blair Tuned his Spore with a Fluff Token to Summon Formula Synchron in Defense Position and draw a card with its effect.

Montague drew a card and then activated Pot of Avarice. He sent Tour Guide, Thunder King Rai-Oh, Effect Veiler, and 2 copies of D.D. Crow from his Graveyard to his Deck to draw Tengu and Tour Guide.

Time was called in the round, and the Duel stood at 6000 Life Points to 6000 Life Points! The winner would be determined by whoever had more Life Points at the end of 4th turn after this one!

Montague continued his turn by Summoning Tour Guide and activating its effect to Special Summon another Tour Guide from his Deck; but Blair cleared the field with Torrential Tribute!

Blair passed without making a play.

Montague Summoned Reborn Tengu and attacked directly, taking a 1700 Life Points lead!

Blair activated Dark Hole to destroy Reborn Tengu and Montague Special Summoned another Tengu from his Deck in Defense Position. Next, Blair Special Summoned Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning, and Montague flipped Torrential Tribute to clear the field and grab another Tengu. Blair offered the handshake, Dueling in his final turn and unable to deal any damage to Sean Montague.
