Round 11: Robert Bryant vs. Nathaniel Smith

February 19th, 2012

Robert Bryant is currently 8-2 with his Dark World Deck, and is facing off against Nathaniel Smith’s Chaos Deck for a seat in the Top 32. The result of this Match will determine the fate of both Duelists in the tournament.

Bryant opened up Duel 1 with a Set Trap Dustshoot, and nothing else.

Smith opened up with Mystical Space Typhoon, Heavy Storm, Fiendish Chain, Torrential Tribute, Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning, and Allure of Darkness. Bryant activated Trap Dustshoot in the Standby Phase to reveal his hand send Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning back to his Deck. Smith Set a card before ending his turn.

Bryant drew The Gates of Dark World and then activated Dark World Dealings. He drew Trance Archfiend and discarded Snoww, using Snoww’s effect to add another The Gates of Dark World to his hand. Smith drew a card and discarded Allure of Darkness. Bryant activated The Gates of Dark World next, and activated its effect to banish Snoww from his Graveyard and discard Broww. He drew 2 cards: Trance Archfiend and Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World, thanks to the effects of Broww and his Gates. He Summoned Trance Archfiend and Bryant flipped Torrential Tribute, destroying the Archfiend and allowing Bryant to add his banished Snoww to his hand. Bryant Set Solemn Warning before ending his turn.

Smith activated Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Solemn Warning and then Summoned Breaker, using its effect to destroy Gates. He attacked directly for 1600 and passed with 1 card in his back row.

[If Smith had attacked with Breaker before using its effect, he could’ve dealt an extra 300 points of damage. Gorz was a non-factor thanks to Gates.]

Bryant drew Sillva, Warlord of Dark World and activated his second The Gates of Dark World. He banished Trance Archfiend from his Graveyard to discard Grapha and draw Dark Smog with the effect of his Gates, and then used Grapha’s effect to destroy Smith’s face-down Fiendish Chain. Next, Bryant Normal Summoned Trance Archfiend and activated its effect to discard Sillva. He Special Summoned Sillva to the field and then bounced it to his hand to Special Summon Grapha. Next, Trance Archfiend attacked and destroyed Breaker, and then Grapha attacked directly to drop Smith down to 4300 Life Points. Bryantt Set Dark Smog before ending his turn.

Smith activated Heavy Storm and Bryant Chained Dark Smog; he discarded Snoww from his hand to banish Breaker from Smith’s Graveyard. Heavy Storm resolved to destroy the Dark Smog and The Gates of Dark World, but when Bryant grabbed another Gates from his Deck with the effect of Snoww, Bryant conceded.11-1

Robert Bryant goes through all 3 copies of The Gates of Dark World to win Duel 1! Nathaniel Smith will be going first in Duel 2!

Smith opened up Duel 2 with Pot of Duality, revealing Dust Tornado, Dimensional Prison, and Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter from the top of his Deck. He added the Dust Tornado to his hand and shuffled the other 2 cards back into his Deck. Next, he Normal Summoned Card Trooper and activated its effect by sending Chaos Sorcerer, D.D. Crow, and Solemn Warning from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard. Smith Set 2 cards to his back row before ending his turn.

Bryant Summoned Snoww and attacked Card Trooper with it, destroying it in battle and dealing 1300 points of damage to Smith. Smith drew a card with Trooper’s effect.

Smith Summoned Dimensional Alchemist next turn and activated its effect to banish Sangan from the top of his Deck. He attacked and destroyed Snoww with it.

Bryant drew Dark World Dealings next turn and activated it; but Smith gave up half of his Life Points to negate it with Solemn Judgment! Bryant Summoned Broww next, and attacked over Dimensional Alchemist with it. Dimensional Alchemist’s effect allowed Smith to add Sangan to his hand.

[Smith saw that Bryant had a weak hand and was desperate for a discard engine. That’s why he used Solemn Judgment to negate Dark World Dealings. It was well worth-it, because it left Bryant with a bunch of Dark World monsters that he couldn’t discard.]

Smith Summoned Tour Guide From the Underworld next turn and activated its effect to Special Summon another Tour Guide from his Deck. Next, Smith combined his 2 Tour Guides to Xyz Summon Leviair the Sea Dragon. He banished Dimensional Alchemist and Chaos Sorcerer from his Graveyard to Special Summon Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning and Bryant instantly conceded!

Robert Bryant’s hand gets cluttered with Dark World monsters in Duel 2, giving Nathaniel Smith an easy victory. Bryant will be going first in Duel 3!11-2

Bryant opened up Duel 3 by Setting 4 Spell or Trap Cards and a monster.

Smith Normal Summoned Thunder King Rai-Oh and Set a card to his back row, expecting Bryant’s face-down monster to be Morphing Jar. He attacked the Morphing Jar. Smith discarded Card Trooper, Chaos Sorcerer, and 2 D.D. Crows, and Bryant discarded Sillva, Warlord of Dark World. Bryant drew Solemn Warning, Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World, The Gates of Dark World, and 2 copies of Dragged Down into the Grave, and Smith drew 5 new cards too. Bryant Special Summoned Sillva after Morphing Jar’s effect resolved. Smith activated Heavy Storm next, and Bryant Chained Dark Smog. He discarded Grapha to banish Chaos Sorcerer from Smith’s Graveyard. Then Heavy Storm resolved, taking down Smith’s Dust Tornado and Bryant’s 4 back rows. Finally, Grapha’s effect resolved to destroy Thunder King Rai-Oh. Smith activated Allure of Darkness next. He drew 2 cards and banished Tour Guide From the Underworld from his hand. Before ending his turn, he activated Monster Reborn to revive Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World and Set a card to his back row.

[Dark World Decks don’t usually Set a lot of cards, so when a Dark World Duelist Sets a monster, there’s a good chance that it’s a Morphing Jar.]

Bryant drew Goldd, Wu-Lord of Dark World next turn. He activated Gates, Set 2 cards to his back row, and then activated Dragged Down. Smith revealed Alchemist and Spirit Reaper, and Bryant sent the Alchemist to the Graveyard. Bryant also discarded his only in-hand card, Goldd, and Special Summoned it. He drew Dark Smog, and Smith also drew a card. Next, Bryant combined his Goldd and Sillva to Summon Adreus, Keeper of Armageddon, and activated its effect to destroy Smith’s Grpaha. He chose not to attack with Adreus.

Smith activated Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Solemn Warning and then Normal Summoned Tour Guide. He activated its effect to Special Summon another Tour Guide and then Xyz Summoned Wind-Up Zenmaines in Defense Position.

Bryant drew Mystical Space Typhoon and activated it to destroy Smith’s face-down Trap Dustshoot. Then he Set Dark Smog and ended his turn.

Smith switched Zenmaines into Attack Position and attacked Adreus. He lost some Life Points and an Xyz Material. Smith Set a monster and then, in the End Phase, he destroyed Bryant’s Adreus with Zenmaines’s effect.

Bryant activated Dark World Dealings next turn, with no other cards in his hand. He drew and discarded Broww, allowing him to draw another card. Smith drew a card and discarded Spirit Reaper. Bryant drew a Dark World Dealings off of the effect of Broww. He activated it again, this time to draw and discard Rivalry of Warlords. Smith drew a card and discarded Thunder King Rai-Oh.

Smith Summoned Breaker the Magical Warrior next turn. He used its effect to destroy The Gates of Dark World and then attacked directly with Sangan, Breaker, and Zenmaines to drop Bryant down to 3900 Life Points.

Bryant drew Sillva, Warlord of Dark World next turn. He activated Dragged Down into the Graveyard. He lost Sillva from his hand and Smith lost Breaker. Both players drew a card and then Sillva was Special Summoned. He bounced Sillva to his hand to Special Summon Grapha, and then attacked Breaker with Grapha to destroy it. He Set the Mystical Space Typhoon he drew off of Dragged Down into the Grave and then ended his turn.

Smith switched Sangan to Defense Position and then attacked Grapha with Wind-Up Zenmaines. He lost 1200 Life Points and an Xyz Material, but in the End Phase, targeted Grapha with Zenmaines to destroy it. But Bryant also used Mystical Space Typhoon and Dark Smog in the End Phase – Mystical Space Typhoon destroyed Smith’s Book of Moon and then Dark Smog banished Dimensional Alchemist and allowed Bryant to discard and Special Summon Sillva.

Bryant drew Trance Archfiend next turn and then returned Sillva to his hand to Special Summon Grapha. He attacked Zenmaines with Grapha, destroying it in battle and dropping Smith down to 3100 Life Points.

Smith Flip Summoned Spirit Reaper and combined it with Sangan to Xyz Summon Leviair the Sea Dragon. He activated its effect to Special Summon Dimensional Alchemist from his Banished Zone and then banished Ryko from the top of his Deck to activate its effect. He attacked Grapha with Dimensional Alchemist to destroy his own monster, and then used its effect to add a banished Chaos Sorcerer to his hand. He banished Sangan and Dimensional Alchemist from his Graveyard to Special Summon Chaos Sorcerer, and banished Grapha with his Sorcerer’s effect. Bryant discarded Sillva and banished Thunder King Rai-Oh with Dark Smog in his End Phase, in order to Special Summon Sillva.

Bryant drew Snoww, Unlight of Dark World next turn! He Summoned Trance Archfiend and discarded Snoww with its effect. He searched his Deck for The Gates of Dark World and activated it. Trance Archfiend attacked and destroyed Leviair, and then Sillva tried to attack Chaos Sorcerer, but lost out to Dimensional Prison.

Smith attacked Trance Archfiend next turn with Chaos Sorcerer, allowing Bryant to add Grapha to his hand. Smith Set a card to his back row and passed.

[Smith immediately regret not using Sorcerer’s effect to banish the Trance Archfiend instead. That way, Bryant wouldn’t have been able to use his Trance Archfiend’s effect to return a banished monster to his hand.]

Bryant drew Goldd, Wu-Lord of Dark World next turn. He activated his Gates to banish Snoww and discard Grapha, and used Grapha’s effect to destroy Smith’s face-down Solemn Warning. Next, he used his Smog to discard Sillva and banish a Tour Guide from Smith’s Graveyard. He Special Summoned the Sillva and then returned it to his hand to Special Summon Grapha. Grapha attacked over Chaos Sorcerer, destroying it in battle.

Smith drew a card and conceded on his next turn, unable to take down Grapha.

Robert Bryant uses his Dark World army to defeat Nathaniel Smith’s Chaos Deck and finish the Swiss rounds with a 9-2 record!
