Round 7: Michael Lam vs. Christopher Arroyo

February 18th, 2012

Michael Lam was 5-0 with his Dragon Deck before losing to a Karakuri Deck in Round 6. Now, he’s Dueling against Christopher Arroyo and his Dino Rabbits in this Round 7 Feature Match!

Arroyo started off the Match by Normal Summoning Rescue Rabbit and banishing it to Special Summon 2 copies of Kabazauls from his Deck. He combined them to Xyz Summon Evolzar Laggia and then Set 2 cards to his back row before ending his turn.

Lam activated Gold Sarcophagus to banish Future Fusion from his Deck so that he could add it to his hand 2 turns later. Lam Set Chain Disappearance, Torrential Tribute, and Koa’ki Meiru Drago before ending his turn.

Arroyo opened up with Rescue Rabbit, Tour Guide From the Underworld, Fiendish Chain, Monster Reborn, Maxx “C”, and Forbidden Lance. Normal Summoned Tour Guide From the Underworld and activated its effect. Lam tried banishing the Tour Guide with Chain Disappearance, but Arroyo activated Forbidden Lance to make Tour Guide unaffected by Traps. Tour Guide Special Summoned Sangan from Arroyo’s Deck, and when Lam tried to use Torrential Tribute, Arroyo negated it with the effect of Evolzar Laggia. Next, Arroyo combined Sangan and Tour Guide to Special Summon Leviair the Sea Dragon, and activated Leviair’s effect to Special Summon Rescue Rabbit. He activated the Rabbit’s effect to Special Summon 2 copies of Sabersaurus from his Deck and combined them to Xyz Summon another Evolzar Laggia. One Laggia attacked and destroyed Lam’s Dragon, and then Leviair and the other Laggia attacked directly to drop Lam down to 3800 Life Points.

Lam drew Solemn Warning next turn, but it was no help. He Set Drago, Heavy Storm, and Solemn Warning before ending his turn.

Arroyo Normal Summoned Tour Guide From the Underworld next turn and activated its effect to Special Summon Tour Bus From the Underworld from his Deck! He combined Tour Guide with Tour Bus in order to Xyz Summon Number 17: Leviathan Dragon, and Lam conceded, realizing he had no way out.
Round7Beatdown
Michael Lam activated Gold Sarcophagus on his first turn to try to get Future Fusion, but Christopher Arroyo was able to defeat him before 2 more turns passed! Michael Lam will be going first in Duel 2!

Lam opened up with Delta Flyer, Totem Dragon, Red-Eyes Wyvern, Dark Hole, Mystical Space Typhoon, and Book of Moon. He Set Totem Dragon, Mystical Space Typhoon, and Book of Moon before ending his turn.

Arroyo Normal Summoned Sabersaurus and attacked Lam’s face-down Totem Dragon to destroy it. He Set 2 cards to his back row before ending his turn, and lost a Fiendish Chain to Lam’s Mystical Space Typhoon in his End Phase.

Lam drew Exploder Dragon next turn. He Normal Summoned Delta Flyer and used its effect to bring Totem Dragon up to Level 3. Then he overlayed Delta Flyer with Totem Dragon to Summon Number 17: Leviathan Dragon. Lam activated Leviathan Dragon’s effect by detaching Totem Dragon, raising its ATK to 2500. He ended his turn without declaring an attack.

Arroyo Normal Summoned Rescue Rabbit next turn and activated its effect to Special Summon 2 copies of Kabazauls from his Deck. He combined them into Evolzar Laggia and then attacked Leviathan Dragon with Laggia. In the Damage Step, Arroyo activated Forbidden Lance, dropping Number 17: Leviathan Dragon down to 1700 ATK. Laggia destroyed Leviathan Dragon in battle and then Sabersaurus attacked directly, dropping Lam down to 5400 Life Points.

Lam drew Bottomless Trap Hole next turn. He activated Book of Moon, targeting Evolzar Laggia, and Arroyo negated the Book of Moon by detaching both Xyz Materials. Next, Lam activated Dark Hole to destroy Laggia and Sabersaurus. Lam Summoned Red-Eyes Wyvern next and attacked directly for 1800 points of damage. Lam Set Bottomless Trap Hole before ending his turn.

Arroyo Set a card to each zone and passed.

Lam drew Mystical Space Typhoon. He attacked with his Wyvern to destroy Arroyo’s face-down Kabazauls in battle.

Arroyo activated Pot of Avarice, returning 3 Kabazauls, a Sabersaurus, and an Evolzar Laggia to his Deck and Extra Deck to draw 2 cards. Next, he Normal Summoned Rescue Rabbit and activated its effect; but Lam flipped Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Arroyo’s face-down Solemn Judgment. Arroyo Special Summoned 2 Kabazauls from his Deck, and Lam flipped Bottomless Trap Hole to banish them both. Arroyo activated Dimensional Fissure and Set a card to his back row before ending his turn.

[Using Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Arroyo’s face-down Trap Card (which happened to be Solemn Judgment) when Arroyo Summoned Rescue Rabbit was a great play. It assured Lam that he would be able to use his Bottomless Trap Hole to banish both monsters Summoned by Rescue Rabbit’s effect.]

Lam drew Masked Dragon next turn. He attacked directly with Red-Eyes Wyvern and then Set the Dragon.

Arroyo activated Dark Hole to banish the Masked Dragon and Red-Eyes Wyvern, and then Summoned Tour Bus From the Underworld to attack directly. Lam dropped down to 4400 Life Points.

Lam drew Solemn Warning next turn. He Normal Summoned Exploder Dragon and then attacked Tour Bus with it; but Arroyo flipped Book of Moon to put Exploder Dragon face-down.

Arroyo destroyed Exploder Dragon in battle with Tour Bus on his next turn.

Lam drew Masked Dragon and Set it.

Arroyo attacked the face-down Masked Dragon with Tour Bus From the Underworld, costing him 100 Life Points.

Lam drew Gold Sarcophagus next turn! He activated it to banish Rivalry of Warlords from his Deck to reclaim it 2 turns later.

Arroyo drew Sabersaurus next turn. He tried to Summon it, but lost out to Lam’s Solemn Warning.

Lam drew Black Horn of Heaven and Set it.

Arroyo Set a card to his back row and passed.

Lam drew another Black Horn of Heaven and then added Rivalry of Warlords to his hand. He Set both Trap Cards before passing.

Arroyo drew and activated Mind Control, targeting Lam’s Masked Dragon. He combined it with Tour Bus to try to Xyz Summon Wind-Up Zenmaines, but Lam flipped Black Horn of Heaven to negate the Summon of Zenmaines. Arroyo used Tour Bus’s effect to send Totem Dragon back to Lam’s Deck.

Lam drew another Masked Dragon next turn. He Summoned it to the field, and Arroyo flipped Torrential Tribute to banish it from the Duel.

Arroyo drew Monster Reborn next turn! He activated it to Special Summo Number 17: Leviathan Dragon and then realized it couldn’t attack without Xyz Materials! He ended his turn.

[After the Match, Arroyo said that he regrets making this play, and wishes he had Special Summoned a different monster with Monster Reborn instead.]

Lam drew Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon and passed.

Arroyo drew a card and passed.

Lam drew Divine Dragon Apocralyph and tried to Summon it, but lost out to Solemn Warning.

Arroyo drew and Summoned Sabersaurus next turn! Lam flipped Rivalry of Warlords, and Arroyo sent Number 17: Leviathan Dragon to the Graveyard. Sabersaurus attacked directly, dropping Lam down to 500 Life Points.

Lam drew another Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon and conceded, knowing that Sabersaurus would finish him off next turn.

[After the Match, Lam said that he wishes he had activated Rivalry of Warlords while Arroyo had Number 17: Leviathan Dragon on the field, before Arroyo Summoned Sabersaurus. That way, Arroyo wouldn’t have been able to Summon Sabersaurus and use it to win the Duel.]

Christopher Arroyo defeats Michael Lam 2-0 and advances with a 6-1 record!
