Round 3 Feature Match: Andrew Trevino vs. Alex Vansant
This Match would pit two undefeated Duelists head-to-head, in a contest that would see two very different strategies attempting the same goal; the Wind-Up Hunter loop. This was a race between Andrew Trevino’s more familiar Wind-Up build, against Alex Vansant’s monster-heavy Deck that packs Tech Genus monsters, Kagemucha Knight, and Junk Forward!
.
Duel One
Trevino got us started with Tour Guide from the Underworld, Special Summoning Sangan from his Deck in Attack Position; Vansant Special Summoned T.G. Warwolf. Trevino Set 2 cards to his back row.
Vansant had a hand of Dark Hole, another T.G. Warwolf, Snowman Eater, Gallis the Star Beast, and Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning. He attacked over Tour Guide with Warwolf, then Set Snowman Eater.
Trevino Summoned Wind-Up Hunter, then combined it with Sangan to Xyz Summon Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity. He detached Hunter to Special Summon Wind-Up Rat from his Deck, then used the Rat to Special Summon Hunter back. He Tributed Zenmaity for Hunter’s effect, making Vansant send his other Warwolf to the Graveyard. He then combined Rat and Hunter for another Zenmaity, detached Hunter to Special Summon another Rat, and brought back Hunter. He Tributed Zenmaity to make Vansant drop his Gallis to the Graveyard, and another Zenmaity got him his third Rat and his Hunter back. This time Vansant lost his Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning! With Hunter and a Rat on the field once again, Trevino Xyz Summon Number 20: Giga-Brilliant, and detached Hunter to boost Brilliant’s effect. Brilliant attacked over Warwolf for 900 Battle Damage, and in the End Phase Vansant searched his Deck with Warwolf’s effect, adding T.G. Striker to his hand.
Vansant drew Tour Guide from the Underworld! He Summoned her, but lost her effect to Trevino’s Fiendish Chain. Vansant Flip Summoned Snowman Eater, trying to destroy Giga-Brilliant, but Trevino stopped him with Effect Veiler. Vansant used Tour Guide and Snowman Eater to Summon Wind-Up Zenmaines in Defense Position, and ended holding Dark Hole and T.G. Striker.
Trevino drew to 2 cards in hand, and Summoned Wind-Up Rabbit. He activated Giga-Brilliant’s effect and ended, with a dud Fiendish Chain on the field plus one Set Spell / Trap, and one card left in hand.
Vansant drew Tragodeia, and after laboring over his decision for a bit, passed. “You looped me! That’s my job!”
“It wasn’t a very good loop, though,” remarked Trevino, who passed his turn.
Vansant drew Tour Bus from the Underworld; “You still looped me!” Vansant passed back. “You got three cards!”
Trevino passed back.
Vansant drew Wind-Up Rat. He activated Dark Hole, destroying Giga-Brilliant and making Trevino banish his Wind-Up Rabbit. Vansant detached Snowman Eater from his Zenmaines to keep it on the field, threatening to destroy Trevino’s last Set card. He turned Zenmaines to Attack Position, swung for 1500 Battle Damage, and destroyed Trevino’s Set Solemn Judgment in the End Phase with Zenmaines’ ability!
Trevino’s Rabbit hopped back to the field next turn, and he Normal Summoned another one. He took Zenmaines with Mind Control, and attacked with a Rabbit; Vansant Special Summoned Tragoedia with 1800 ATK and DEF, in Defense Position. In Main Phase 2, Trevino banished Wind-Up Zenmaines with one of his Rabbits to detach Zenmaines’ remaining Xyz Material. He still had his second Rabbit effect.
Vansant drew Wind-Up Shark and attacked the Rabbit that still had its effect with Tragoedia. He didn’t replay his attack to take down the other Rabbit; instead, he moved to Main Phase 2 to discard Tour Bus, targeting Wind-Up Rat with Tragoedia. Trevino Chained Effect Veiler to negate Tragoedia’s effect! Vansant returned a Warwolf from his Graveyard to his Deck with Tour Bus’ effect. “Here goes nothing..” Vansant seemed as if he was about to make a move. “No, wait. Let me think about this….” Vansant muttered away for a bit, before announcing, “I’ll end my turn.”
Trevino brought back his Rabbit, and Vansant returned his Zenmaines to the field. Trevino used both Rabbits for Number 17: Leviathan Dragon, powering it up to 2500 ATK and attacking to destroy Zenmaines. Trevino Set a single Spell or Trap.
Vansant drew Cyber Dragon and inspected his Graveyard. Vansant played Wind-Up Rat on the table, and Special Summoned Wind-Up Shark. He then activated Tragoedia’s effect, turning it into a Level 3, and reduced the Shark to Level 3 as well, using them both to Xyz Summon Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity. He detached Shark to Special Summon Wind-Up Hunter, and Tributed Zenmaity to make Trevino pitch his last in-hand card: Gorz the Emissary of Darkness. Vansant Special Summoned Shark back to the field with Rat, then used Hunter and Rat for another Zenmaity. He tried to use its effect, but Trevino negated the Summon with Solemn Warning! Trevino dropped to 4300 Life Points, while Vansant had 5300 remaining. Vansant ended.
Trevino drew and Set a card to his back row, then attacked with Leviathan, destroying the Shark.
Vansant drew Effect Veiler, adding it to his hand of Cyber Dragon and T.G. Striker. He Special Summoned Striker in Defense Position and ended.
Trevino tried to pass, but Vansant wanted to activate his Effect Veiler’s effect in the Main Phase, resetting Leviathan to 2000 ATK. Trevino let him, and ended his turn.
Vansant Summoned Tour Guide from the Underworld, but when he brought out another Tour Guide, his first was turned face-down with Book of Moon!
Trevino drew and activated Pot of Avarice! He returned five cards from his Graveyard to his Deck, shuffled, and drew two more. He Normal Summoned Wind-Up Rat, and activated its effect to bring back Hunter. He combined Rat and Hunter for another Zenmaity (which he’d returned to his Extra Deck with Pot of Avarice), and used it to Special Summon Wind-Up Magician. He also had Wind-Up Shark! Trevino Special Summoned it from his hand, Magician’s effect triggered, and let Trevino Special Summon another Wind-Up Rat. He combined Shark and Magician for Number 39: Utopia, and brought back Hunter with Rat to Tribute Zenmaity, costing Vansant his last in-hand card, the Cyber Dragon. Trevino Summoned Leviair the Sea Dragon, then attacked to wipe Vansant’s field clean. In the End Phase, Vansant searched his Deck for T.G. Warwolf with Striker’s effect.
Vansant drew Treacherous Trap Hole, setting both it and Warwolf.

Vansant drew and Set Heavy Storm.
Trevino attacked with Rabbit and Leviair next turn, dropping Vansant to 4300 Life Points. Vansant Set a monster, but when Trevino Summoned Wind-Up Kitten next turn, Vansant packed it in!
Andrew Trevino captures a hard-fought, back-and-forth contest in the first Duel, as Alex Vansant just can’t draw his way out of a rough late game position! Both Duelists quickly made heavy use of their Side Decks before starting game 2.
.
Duel Two
Vansant started off Duel 2 with T.G. Striker, Genex Ally Birdman, Tour Bus from the Underworld, T.G. Warwolf, Gallis the Star Beast, and Snowman Eater. He revealed Gallis for its effect, sending Effect Veiler to the Graveyard and Special Summoning Gallis. He then returned Gallis to his hand to Special Summon Birdman. He Special Summoned Gallis again, this time sending another Birdman from his Deck to the Graveyard. Vansant Special Summoned T.G. Warwolf, then Normal Summoned Tour Bus. He combined Tour Bus and Gallis for Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity, then detached Gallis to Special Summon Wind-Up Hunter. He Tributed Zenmaity to make Trevino send his own Hunter to the Graveyard, and got another Zenmaity. He Special Summoned Wind-Up Rat from his Deck, but when he went for Wind-Up Hunter, trying to Special Summon it, Trevino Chained D.D. Crow’s effect to banish Hunter. Vansant then combined Birdman and Wind-Up Rat for Leviair the Sea Dragon, and detached Rat to Special Summon back his banished Hunter! He Tributed Zenmaity, making Trevino send Heavy Storm to his Graveyard, and ended.

Trevino drew and Set a monster.
Vansant drew Junk Forward, then Special Summoned another Wind-Up Shark with Zenmaity. When Vansant announced that he was going to Summon a Rank 5, Trevino conceded and quickly prepared for the third Duel.
Alex Vansant fights through a D.D. Crow to batter Trevino’s hand into submission with Wind-Up Hunter, then gets the better of his opponent in a simplified situation where both Duelists were down to just two cards, dominating with a gutsy Zenmaity gambit! One more Duel would decide the victor.
