Dragon Duel Round 2 Roundup

March 25th, 2012

We’re back with another glimpse at Saturday’s YCS Long Beach Dragon Duels! Take a look at how our young Duelists fared this round, and see which of them will be advancing with 2-0 records.

.

At Table 1, Jesse Kotton’s Dino Rabbit Deck defeated Benjamin Hoffner-Brodsky’s  Chaos Deck 2-1!

Duel 1 started off slow, but sped up with Jesse used Mind Control to take control of a D.D. Warrior Lady while he already had a Kabazauls on the field. He Xyz Summoned Number 39: Utopia and then used Rescue Rabbit to Special Summon 2 more Dinos and Xyz Summon Evolzar Dolkka. Kotton’s 2 Xyz Monsters made short work of Hoffner-Brodsky.

In Duel 2, Kotton flipped Macro Cosmos, shutting down nearly Hoffner-Brodsky’s entire Deck! Hoffner-Brodsky had 2 copies of Maxx “C”, 1 Effect Veiler, Chaos Sorcerer, and Monster Reborn – none of which would be effective with Macro Cosmos on the field! But Hoffner-Brodsky turned it around with Tragoedia! He Summoned Tragoedia with 3000 ATK when Kotton had Ally of Justice Catastor and Evolzar Laggia on the field with Macro Cosmos. Tragoedia took down Catastor and Laggia, and allowed Hoffner-Brodsky to win the Duel despite drawing so many useless cards. After Tragoedia was Summoned, Kotton drew a bunch of Trap cards, like Solemn Warning and Solemn Judgment, which couldn’t stop Tragoedia’s attacks. Tragoedia is a great card to Summon when your hand is cluttered with cards you can’t play. Tragoedia turns each of those cards into an extra 600 ATK, which will sometimes give it enough ATK to win a Duel on its own.

In Duel 3, Kotton was able to Summon Mist Wurm and Dolkka to win the Duel, without drawing Rescue Rabbit. He used Monster Reborn and a bunch of Normal Monsters to do it instead. By Tuning Effect Veiler with 2 Kabazauls to Summon Mist Wurm, Kotton finished the Duel in a big way.

.

At Table 2, Gabriel Viera used his Dino Ninja Deck to Defeat Mason Archbold’s Wind-Up Deck 2-1!

In Duel 1, Mason pulled off the Wind-Up Hunter loop on the first turn to send 3 cards from Viera’s hand to the Graveyard. Viera almost mounted a comeback, but Archbold use Wind-Up Magician and Wind-Up Shark to create a flurry of Xyz Monsters and finish Viera off.

In Duel 2, Viera Summoned an Evolzar Dolkka by attacking over a Wind-Up Rat with Jurrac Guaiba and recruiting another Guaiba to the field. Dolkka overpowered Archbold to win Viera the Duel.

In Duel 3, Mason pulled off the Wind-Up Hunter loop again, just like in Duel 1; but this time, Viera came back! He Special Summoned Chaos Sorcerer and a pair of Kycoos to take down Archbold.

.

At Table 3, Leonard Megliola’s Dark World Deck defeated Leif Diaz’s Nordic Deck 2-1!

In Duel 1, Diaz used The Nordic Lights to protect his Nordic monsters. Megliola wasn’t initially able to destroy them due to the effect of The Nordic Lights; but he eventually replaced The Nordic Lights with The Gates of Dark World to take down Megliola’s Dark World army. Attacks from 2 Graphas and a Fabled Leviathan finished off Diaz over the next few turns.

In Duel 2, Diaz used Valkyrie of the Nordic Ascendant’s effect to Summon Odin, Father of the Aesir on his second turn! Megliola just couldn’t take down Odin for good, and Diaz quickly won Duel 2!

In Duel 3, Diaz quickly Summoned Odin again, but this time, Megliola was able to take it down. He used Dark Smog to discard and Special Summon Sillva, Warlord of Dark World while banishing Valkyrie from Diaz’s Graveyard. By banishing Valkyrie, he was able to prevent Valkyrie from protecting Odin from destruction. Next, Megliola used Monster Reborn to Special Summon Broww, Huntsman of Dark World, and Tributed it to Summon Goldd, Wu-Lord of Dark World. Then he combined Goldd and Sillva to Summon Adreus, Keeper of Armageddon, and used Adreus’s effect to destroy Odin. After taking down Odin, Adreus kept attacking to win Megliola the Duel!

.

At Table 4, Aden Garrabrant used his Inzektor Deck to defeat Brent Lee’s Lightsworn Deck 2-0!

In Duel 1, Garrabrant pulled off his Inzektor loop, using Inzektor Dragonfly to Special Summon Inzektor Centipede and Inzektor Centipede to search for Inzektor Dragonfly, while destroying cards with Inzektor Hornet. Lee’s Wulf, Lightsworn Beast and Jain, Lightsworn Paladin were no match for Garrabrant’s Insects.

In Duel 2, Garrabrant was off to a slower start. Garrabrant fell down to 550 Life Points early and Lee had him on the ropes. But when Lee Special Summoned Judgment Dragon while Garrabrant was at 550 Life Points with a Wind-Up Zenmaines on the field protected by 2 Xyz Materials, Lee only used Judgment Dragon’s effect once. Zenmaines only lost 1 Xyz Material, and Judgment Dragon attacked Zenmaines to remove the other Xyz Material. Then Zenmaines destroyed Judgment Dragon in the End Phase with its effect, creating a turning point for Garrabrant. Garrabrant was able to win with Inzektor Giga-Mantis, Inzektor Dragonfly, and Wind-Up Zenmaines. Lee realized that if he had used Judgment Dragon’s effect 3 times instead of just once, in order to destroy Zenmaines and attack directly, he would’ve been able to win.

Jesse Kotton, Gabriel Viera, Leonard Megliola, and Aden Garrabrant are moving on with 2-0 records!
