Round 11: Alexander Reed vs. Benito Garcia

April 15th, 2012

Alexander Reed is from Dallas, Texas and came to this tournament with a couple of friends. All of them are using the same Dragon Lightsworn Deck and currently have 8-2 records or better. Reed is currently 9-1, and is Dueling against Tulsa, Oklahoma’s Benito Garcia in Round 11. Garcia is using a Gemini HERO Deck. Both Duelists have a great shot at making it into the Top 32, but the winner here will be guaranteed a spot.

Reed opened up with Charge of the Light Brigade,by sending Monster Reborn, Future Fusion, and Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon from the top of his Deck to the Graveyard and added Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter to his hand with its effect. He Set Sangan and passed to Garcia.

Garcia opened up with E – Emergency Call to add Elemental HERO Stratos to his hand and Summoned it to the field, using its effect to grab an Elemental HERO Neos Alius from his Deck. Stratos attacked and destroyed Reed’s face-down Sangan, and Reed added Honest from his Deck to his hand with Sangan’s effect.

Reed drew Treacherous Trap Hole next turn. He Summoned Card Trooper to the field and used its effect by sending Heavy Storm, Mystic Tomato, and Lightpulsar Dragon from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard. Card Trooper attacked Stratos, but Garcia banished it with Dimensional Prison. Reed Set Treacherous Trap Hole before ending his turn.

Garcia Summoned Neos Alius and then tried attacking, but Reed flipped Treacherous Trap Hole to destroy Stratos and Neos Alius. Garcia Set a card to his back row and ended his turn.

Reed drew Chaos Sorcerer next turn. He discarded Tragoedia and Eclipse Wyvern to Special Summon Lightpulsar Dragon from his Graveyard. Eclipse Wyvern’s effect activated to banish Dark Armed Dragon from his Deck. Reed attacked directly with Lightpulsar Dragon and then Set Ryko in Main Phase 2.

Garcia Normal Summoned Elemental HERO Neos Alius and then activated Gemini Spark to Tribute Neos Alius and destroy Lightpulsar Dragon, Reed drew a card, and the players were under the impression Lightpulsar couldn’t Special Summon another monster from the Graveyard because its effect missed the timing. This was incorrect, as the latest text of Spark makes it clear that destruction and drawing are simultaneous. But it also didn’t matter in the grand scheme of things because…

…Reed drew Judgment Dragon next turn! He Flip Summoned Ryko to target Garcia’s face-down Hero Blast, and Garcia Chained it to destroy Ryko and return Elemental HERO Neos Alius to his hand. Ryko sent Solar Recharge, Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress, and Ehren, Lightsworn Monk from the top of Reed’s Deck to his Graveyard. Next, Reed banished Eclipse Wyvern and Tragoedia from his Graveyard to Special Summon Chaos Sorcerer, and Wyvern’s effect added Dark Armed Dragon to Reed’s hand. He Special Summoned Dark Armed Dragon with exactly 3 DARK monsters in his Graveyard and then Normal Summoned Honest. Direct attacks from Honest, Chaos Sorcerer, and Dark Armed Dragon wiped out all 5500 of Garcia’s Life Points! (The Judgment Dragon went unused.)

Alexander Reed uses his biggest Dragons and Chaos Sorcerer to make short work of Benito Garcia! Garcia will be going first in Duel 2!

Garcia opened up with  Prohibition naming Lightpulsar Dragon and then Set 2 more cards to his back row and Set a monster.

Reed tried Summoning Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress but Garcia flipped Solemn Warning and paid 2000 Life Points to negate its Summon. Reed Set Mystical Space Typhoon before ending his turn.

Garcia drew and passed.

Reed drew Mystic Tomato next turn. He Summoned Jain, Lightsworn Paladin and attacked Garcia’s face-down Snowman Eater. Snowman Eater destroyed Jain with its effect, and Jain destroyed Snowman Eater in battle.

Garcia activated Monster Reborn to Special Summon Jain from Reed’s Graveyard and then attacked Reed directly with it. He Set a card before ending his turn and sent Elemental HERO Stratos and Dimensional Prison from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard with Jain’s effect in the End Phase.

Reed drew Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning and then Set Mystic Tomato.

Garcia attacked the Mystic Tomato with Jain, and Reed Special Summoned Phantom of Chaos from his Deck in Attack Position with Tomato’s effect. In Garcia’s End Phase, he sent Solemn Judgment and Torrential Tribute from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard with Jain’s effect.

Reed drew Honest next turn. He activated the effect of his Phantom of Chaos to imitate the Lyla in his Graveyard and then used its effect to switch it into Defense Position and destroy Starlight Road. He ended his turn and sent Tragoedia, Card Trooper, and Sangan from to the top of his Deck to his Graveyard in the End Phase.

Garcia activated Miracle Fusion and banished the Stratos and Snowman Eater in his Graveyard to Summon Elemental HERO Absolute Zero. Next, he attacked Phantom of Chaos with Jain to destroy it, and Absolute Zero attacked directly to drop Reed down to 3700 Life Points. In his End Phase, Garcia sent Beast King Barbaros and Elemental HERO Neos Alius from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard with Jain’s effect.

Reed drew Tragoedia next turn and passed.

Garcia attacked with Elemental HERO Absolute Zero and Reed flipped Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Garcia’s face-down Torrential Tribute. Absolute Zero dropped Reed down to 1200 Life Points, and Reed Special Summoned Tragoedia in Defense Position with 3000 DEF. Garcia Summoned Thunder King Rai-Oh in Main Phase 2. In his End Phase, he sent Skill Drain and Miracle Fusion from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard with Jain’s effect.

Reed drew Gorz the Emissary of Darkness next turn. He discarded Honest to take control of Thunder King Rai-Oh and then switched Tragoedia into Attack Position. Rai-Oh attacked Jain, but Garcia discarded Honest from his hand to give Jain 1900 ATK! Jain destroyed Rai-Oh and wiped out the last 1200 of Reed’s Life Points!

Benito Garcia uses Reed’s Jain against him to win Duel 2! Reed will be going first in Duel 3!

Reed opened up Duel 3 with Charge of the Light Brigade,  sending Ryko, Ehren, and Chaos Sorcerer from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard, and added a Ryko from his Deck to his hand with its effect. He Set Ryko before ending his turn.

Garcia Summoned Rai-Oh and attacked Ryko. Ryko destroyed Thunder King Rai-Oh and sent Lightpulsar Dragon, Royal Decree, and Mystical Space Typhoon from the top of Reed’s Deck to his Graveyard. Garcia Set 2 cards to his back row before ending his turn.

Reed drew Mystical Space Typhoon next turn. He Summoned Lyla and used her effect to destroy Mirror Force. Then he activated Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Garcia’s Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror. Next, he banished Chaos Sorcerer and Ryko from his Graveyard to Summon Lightpulsar Dragon. Lightpulsar Dragon attacked directly and in Reed’s End Phase, he sent Allure of Darkness, Sangan, and Eclipse Wyvern from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard with the effect of Lyla. Wyvern’s effect activated to banish Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon from Reed’s Deck.

Garcia Summoned Beast King Barbaros and attacked over Jain with it.

Reed drew Lightpulsar Dragon next turn. He banished Eclipse Wyvern and Sangan from his Graveyard to Special Summon Lightpulsar Dragon and used his Wyvern’s effect to add Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon from his banished zone to his hand. Then he banished Lightpulsar Dragon to Special Summon Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon and used his Dragon’s effect to Special Summon Lightpulsar Dragon from his Graveyard. Next, Reed attacked over Barbaros with Lightpulsar Dragon. Direct attacks from his other Lightpulsar Dragon and his Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon finished Garcia off!

Alexander Reed is moving on to the Top 32 with his Dragon Lightsworn Deck!
