Round 10: Oliver Tomajko vs. Alexander Reynolds

11-year-old Oliver Tomajko is no stranger to Feature Matches. He’s one of the most skilled Duelists ever to enter the Dragon Duel tournaments, and frequently finds himself featured in the final round. But this weekend, Tomajko entered the Main Event and ended Day 1 with an 8-1 record! Now, he’s Dueling against Alexander Reynolds’s Dragon Deck for a chance to secure a Top 32 finish!

Duel One

Reynolds started off Duel 1 by Setting a monster and passing.

Tomajko opened up with Solemn Warning, Compulsory Evacuation Device, Soul Taker, Effect Veiler, Kabazauls, and Thunder King Rai-Oh. He Summoned Rai-Oh and attacked Reynolds’s face-down Sangan. Rai-Oh stopped Sangan’s effect! Tomajko Set Solemn Warning before ending his turn.

Reynolds Set a monster and passed.

Tomajko drew Tour Guide From the Underworld next turn. He Summoned Kabazauls and then attacked Reynolds’s face-down Ryko with Kabazauls. Ryko destroyed Thunder King Rai-Oh and sent Solar Recharge and 2 Darkflare Dragons from the top of Reynolds’s Deck to his Graveyard. Kabazauls attacked directly to drop Reynolds down to 6300 Life Points, and Reynolds Special Summoned Tragoedia with 2400 ATK in Attack Position. Tomajko activated Soul Taker to destroy Tragoedia in Main Phase 2, and Reynolds gained 1000 Life Points.

Reynolds activated Allure of Darkness to draw 2 cards and banish Tour Guide From the Underworld with its effect. Then he Summoned Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress and activated its effect; but Tomajko discarded Effect Veiler from his hand to negate its effect. Next, Reynolds activated Heavy Storm to destroy Tomajko’s face-down Solemn Warning. He banished Ryko and Sangan from his Graveyard to Special Summon Lightpulsar Dragon. Then he attacked Kabazauls with Lightpulsar Dragon and attacked directly with Lyla, dropping Tomajko down to 5500 Life Points. Tomajko chose not to resolve Veiler immediately in the End Phase, allowing it to prevent Lyla’s effect from sending cards from Reynolds’s Deck to his Graveyard.

Tomajko drew Sabersaurus next turn. He Normal Summoned Sabersaurus and attacked Lyla to destroy it. Then he Set Compulsory Evacuation Device and ended his turn.

Reynolds activated Monster Reborn to Special Summon Lyla from his Graveyard and then activated its effect to target Tomajko’s face-down Compulsory Evacuation Device for destruction; but Tomajko Chained it to return Lightpulsar Dragon to Reynolds’s hand. Reynolds had no LIGHT monsters in his Graveyard, so he Tributed Lyla to Normal Summon Lightpulsar Dragon. He attacked Sabersaurus with Lightpulsar Dragon to destroy it and drop Tomajko down to 4900 Life Points.

Tomajko finally drew a Rescue Rabbit next turn! He Normal Summoned it and then banished it to Special Summon 2 copies of Kabazauls from his Deck. He combined them to Xyz Summon Number 39: Utopia and then ended his turn.

Reynolds activated Solar Recharge by discarding Ryko. He drew 2 cards and then sent Dark Armed Dragon and Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard with Recharge’s effect. Next, he Normal Summoned Eclipse Wyvern and banished it to Special Summon Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon. He used his Red-Eyes’s effect to Special Summon Darkflare Dragon from his Graveyard and then attacked Utopia with Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon and Lightpulsar Dragon, forcing Tomajko to negate both attacks with Utopia’s effect. Darkflare Dragon attacked next, causing Utopia to destroy itself, and then Darkflare Dragon scored a direct attack to bring Tomajko down to 2500 Life Points.

Tomajko drew Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning next turn! He Summoned Tour Guide From the Underworld and used its effect to Special Summon Sangan from his Deck. He combined his Fiends to Summon Leviair the Sea Dragon, and then used Leviair’s effect to Special Summon Rescue Rabbit. He banished Rescue Rabbit to Summon 2 copies of Sabersaurus from his Deck, and combined them to make Maestroke the Symphony Djinn. He detached a Sabersaurus from Maestroke to activate its effect and put Lightpulsar Dragon face-down, and then banished Sangan and Utopia from his Graveyard to Special Summon Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning! Maestroke attacked and destroyed Reynolds’s face-down Lightpulsar Dragon, allowing Reynolds to Special Summon a Darkflare Dragon from his Graveyard with Lightpulsar’s effect. Black Luster Soldier then attacked and destroyed Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon and 1 of Reynolds’s 2 Darkflares. Suddenly, Tomajko was ahead in the Duel.

Reynolds attacked and destroyed Leviair with Darkflare Dragon.

Tomajko drew Dark Hole next turn. He switched Maestroke to Defense Position and then attacked Darkflare Dragon with Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning. He chose not to attack directly, fearing Gorz. Reynolds was down to 5700 Life Points.

Reynolds passed.

Tomajko drew Solemn Warning next turn! He switched Maestroke into Attack Position and then attacked directly with Maestroke to drop Reynolds down to 3900 Life Points. He Set Solemn Warning and Dark Hole before ending his turn.

Reynolds discarded Lyla and Tragoedia to Special Summon Lightpulsar Dragon from his Graveyard. Then he Normal Summoned Effect Veiler and Tuned it with Lightpulsar Dragon to Summon Black Rose Dragon! He used its effect, and Tomajko lost his back rows, Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning, and an Xyz Material from Maestroke.

Tomajko drew Gorz the Emissary of Darkness next turn. He switched Maestroke to Defense Position and passed.

Reynolds banished Tragoedia and Lyla from his Graveyard to Special Summon Chaos Sorcerer and used its effect to banish Maestroke.

Tomajko drew Mystical Space Typhoon and Set it.

Reynolds Summoned Lightpulsar Dragon next turn and attacked directly with it to eliminate Tomajko’s last 1900 Life Points!

Oliver Tomajko almost makes a comeback with Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning, but in the end, Alexander Reynolds’s Chaos Monsters and Dragons were too much for Tomajko to handle. Oliver Tomajko will be going first in Duel 2!

Duel Two

Tomajko opened up Duel 2 with Bottomless Trap Hole, Fiendish Chain, 2 copies of Dimensional Prison, and 2 copies of Tour Guide From the Underworld. He Summoned Tour Guide and activated its effect; but Reynolds negated its effect with Effect Veiler. Tomajko Set Fiendish Chain and Bottomless Trap Hole before ending his turn.

Reynolds Summoned Eclipse Wyvern and Tomajko flipped Bottomless Trap Hole to banish it. Play passed to Tomajko.

Tomajko drew a third Dimensional Prison next turn!

He Normal Summoned Tour Guide and activated its effect, but Reynolds used another Effect Veiler to negate it! Tomajko attacked with both Tour Guides to drop Reynolds to 6000 Life Points, and then combined his Tour Guides to Xyz Summon Wind-Up Zenmaines in Defense Position in Main Phase 2. Tomajko Set a Dimensional Prison before ending his turn.

Reynolds Summoned Lyla and activated her effect; but Tomajko negated it with Fiendish Chain.

Tomajko drew Kabazauls next turn. He Normal Summoned it and then attacked Lyla with Kabazauls. Then Zenmaines attacked directly, dropping Reynolds down to 4500 Life Points.

Reynolds Normal Summoned Tour Guide From the Underworld and activated its effect to Special Summon Sangan from his Deck. He combined his 2 Fiends to Summon Temtempo the Percussion Djinn, and activated its effect to strip Zenmaines of an Xyz Material. Then he passed his turn.

Tomajko drew Sabersaurus and Reynolds used Temtempo’s effect again to take another Xyz Material from Zenmaines.

Reynolds attacked with Temtempo, and Tomajko banished it with Dimensional Prison. Reynolds Special Summoned Lightpulsar Dragon by banishing Effect Veiler and Sangan from his Graveyard, and then Set a monster.

Tomajko drew another Sabersaurus next turn. He Set it along with a Dimensional Prison and passed.

Reynolds Summoned Lyla and activated its effect to destroy Tomajko’s face-down Dimensional Prison. Then he Flip Summoned Ryko and used its effect to destroy Tomajko’s face-down Sabersaurus before sending Dark Armed Dragon, Darkflare Dragon, and Tour Guide from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard. Next, he Summoned Lightpulsar Dragon. When one Lightpulsar Dragon attacked, Tomajko banished it with Dimensional Prison. Then the other one attacked to destroy Zenmaines. In his End Phase, Reynolds sent Chaos Sorcerer, Gorz, and Future Fusion from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard with Lyla’s effect.

Tomajko drew Bottomless Trap Hole next turn. He Summoned Sabersaurus and attacked Lyla, then Set Bottomless Trap Hole.

Reynolds Set a monster and attacked Sabersaurus.

Tomajko drew and Set Macro Cosmos.

Reynolds Flip Summoned Ryko and used its effect to destroy the newly Set Macro Cosmos. He sent Heavy Storm, Solar Recharge, and Eclipse Wyvern from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard, and used Wyvern’s effect to banish Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon from his Deck. Next, he Normal Summoned Tour Guide From the Underworld, but he had no more Fiends to Special Summon with its effect. He attacked directly with Ryko, Tour Guide, and Lightpulsar Dragon to drop Tomajko down to 3700 Life Points.

Tomajko drew Forbidden Lance and Set it.

Reynolds attacked with all 3 of his monsters to try to deal exactly 3700 points of damage to Tomajko, but Tomajko used Forbidden Lance to stay in the Duel with 800 Life Points!

Tomajko drew Fiendish Chain next turn, but it wouldn’t keep him in the Duel.

Reynolds attacked directly with Tour Guide From the Underworld, and after Tomajko blocked the attack with Fiendish Chain, Lightpulsar Dragon attacked directly to finish Tomajko off!

Alexander Reynolds is moving on with a 9-1 record, but 11-year-old Oliver Tomajko still has the chance to win his next round and score a Top 32 finish!
