Dragon Duel – Round 4: Dakota Ticheli VS Charlie Overton
Charlie Overton is from Atlanta, Georgia! The twelve year-old competitor has topped one Dragon Duel in his Dueling career – enough to get him to the tournament today – and is looking to have a breakout showing with Elemental HEROes this weekend! His opponent is Dakota Ticheli – son of Yusei Fudo voice actor Greg Abbey – an eleven year-old Inzektor Duelist from New York City. Ticheli has also topped one Dragon Duel thus far, taking second place in Kansas City back in October of last year. Duel One
Ticheli opened the Match with Pot of Duality, revealing two Call of the Haunted and Inzektor Dragonfly from the top of his Deck: he took a Call and shuffled the other two cards back. He Set a monster, then Set two cards to his back row.
Overton had two Pot of Duality; Elemental HERO Stratos; Thunder King Rai-Oh; Miracle Fusion; and Bottomless Trap Hole. He activated Duality, revealing Hero Blast; Pot of Duality; and Gemini Spark from the top of his Deck. He added Spark to his hand, then Summoned Stratos to search his Deck for Elemental HERO Neos Alius. Overton attacked with Stratos, bouncing harmlessly off Ticheli’s Set Dragonfly, then Set Bottomless Trap Hole. He lost it in the End Phase to Dakota’s Mystical Space Typhoon.
Ticheli Set another Spell or Trap.
Overton drew Dark Hole, then activated his second Pot of Duality to reveal Elemental HERO Neos Alius; Solemn Warning; and Monster Reborn: he took Warning. He Summoned Neos Alius to attack over Inzektor Dragonfly, then made a direct attack with Stratos to drop Ticheli to 6200 Life Points. Overton Set Warning.
Ticheli flipped Call of the Haunted, trying to bring back his Dragonfly, but Overton responded with Solemn Warning to negate the Summon. Ticheli activated Foolish Burial to send Inzektor Hornet to his Graveyard, then brought back Dragonfly with Monster Reborn! He equipped it with Hornet from the Graveyard; used Hornet’s effect to destroy Neos Alius; and Special Summoned Inzektor Centipede with Inzektor Dragonfly’s ability. Centipede grabbed Hornet; Hornet destroyed Stratos; and Centipede got Ticheli another Dragonfly from his Deck! Both monsters attacked for a combined total of 2600 Battle Damage, and Ticheli combined his monsters to Xyz Summon Wind-Up Zenmaines.
Overton drew E – Emergency Call, and used it to get Elemental HERO Neos Alius from his Deck. He activated Dark Hole, pushing an Xyz Material off of Zenmaines. Neos Alius attacked Zenmaines; Ticheli flipped Safe Zone to keep it around; and afterward, Overton used Gemini Spark, destroying Safe Zone to rid the field of Zenmaines. Overton drew Book of Moon. He activated Miracle Fusion in Main Phase 2, banishing two copies of Alius to Special Summon Elemental HERO The Shining. Overton Set Book of Moon.
Ticheli destroyed it next turn with Heavy Storm, then Summoned Inzektor Dragonfly to equip Hornet and destroy The Shining: its ability let Overton take back his two copies of Neos Alius. Ticheli Special Summoned Inzektor Centipede, Set Dark Hole, then equipped Centipede with Hornet to destroy his Dark Hole. That let him get Inzektor Giga-Mantis from his Deck, and he equipped it to Dragonfly. Ticheli attacked for 4000 Battle Damage, ending the Duel!
Dakota Ticheli makes a sacrificial play, giving up his own Dark Hole to trigger Inzektor Centipede’s effect and search out the Inzektor Giga-Mantis he needed to capture Duel 1!
Duel 2
Overton started Duel 2 with two Skill Drain; Pot of Duality; Miracle Fusion; Hero Blast; and Monster Reborn. He activated Duality to reveal the top three cards of his Deck: Miracle Fusion; Gemini Spark; and the all-important E – Emergency Call, which he immediately took. He activated it to get Elemental HERO Neos Alius, ensuring that his Hero Blast would be live even if Ticheli had Effect Veiler to stop a Stratos play, then Summoned Neos Alius. Three Set cards to his Spell and Trap Card Zone ended Overton’s turn.
Ticheli Set a monster, then activated Messenger of Peace. He two more cards to his back row.
Overton drew Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror and passed, unable to attack through Messenger of Peace.
Ticheli passed.
Overton drew Prohibition and passed.
Ticheli Set another Spell or Trap.
Overton drew a second Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror and passed again.
Ticheli dropped to 7700 Life Points, paying for Messenger of Peace.
Overton drew a second Prohibition.
Ticheli lowered himself to 7600 Life Points, then Flip Summoned Inzektor Dragonfly. He tried to equip it with its effect, but Overton Chained Skill Drain to negate Dragonfly’s ability. Ticheli Summoned Inzektor Hornet, then stacked it with Dragonfly to Xyz Summon Number 17: Leviathan Dragon.
Overton drew Torrential Tribute, and activated Prohibition to declare Inzektor Hornet.
Ticheli went to 7500 Life Points and detached for Leviathan Dragon’s effect, knowing that effect would be negated by Skill Drain. He just wanted to get Inzektor Dragonfly to the Graveyard.
Overton drew and activated Reinforcement of the Army, getting another Elemental HERO Neos Alius. He Summoned it, and Ticheli flipped Torrential Tribute to clear the field. Overton followed up, activating Miracle Fusion: Ticheli Chained Solemn Warning, stopping Overton from Special Summoning Elemental HERO The Shining.
Ticheli flipped Call of the Haunted, Special Summoning Inzektor Dragonfly. He attacked with it, but Overton defended his Life Points with Hero Blast, destroying Dragonfly and getting back his Neos Alius. Ticheli Set a Spell or Trap.
Overton Summoned Beast King Barbaros, with 3000 ATK thanks to Skill Drain. He Set another Spell or Trap and ended, still locked down under Messenger of Peace.
Ticheli paid himself down to 5300 Life Points, and Set two cards to his Spell and Trap Card Zone.
Overton got another Miracle Fusion, and Summoned Neos Alius, ending.
Ticheli activated Dimensional Fissure.
Overton drew Solemn Warning and passed.
Ticheli passed.
Overton drew Gemini Spark and activated it, Tributing Neos Alius to destroy Messenger of Peace. Neos Alius was banished due to Dimensional Fissure, and Overton drew Mystical Space Typhoon. He activated it next, destroying Fissure to leave Ticheli with two back row cards. Monster Reborn brought back Neos Alius; Overton attacked; and Ticheli took 1900 Battle Damage. With 3200 Life Points left, he blocked Barbaros’ attack with Compulsory Evacuation Device. Overton Set a third back row card.
Ticheli activated Heavy Storm, destroying his own Mystical Space Typhoon and Overton’s face-up Skill Drain; a Set Skill Drain; Torrential Tribute; Solemn Warning; and Prohibition! He Summoned Inzektor Hornet, and equipped it with the Hornet in his Graveyard to destroy Neos Alius. Hornet attacked for 500 Battle Damage, and Ticheli Set a single Spell or Trap.
Overton drew and activated Pot of Duality, revealing Hero Blast; Torrential Tribute; and Chain Disappearance: he took Hero Blast. Overton tried to Summon Beast King Barbaros, but lost out to Ticheli’s Solemn Judgment. He Set two cards to his back row and tried to play Miracle Fusion, but was reminded that he’d played Pot of Duality this turn and thus couldn’t Special Summon. He activated Prohibition, declaring Inzektor Hornet and ending.
Ticheli equipped Hornet with Inzektor Ladybug from his hand. Overton Hero Blasted Hornet, getting back a Neos Alius, and Ticheli Set a single Spell or Trap. Overton drew E – Emegency Call, and attacked with Neos to take the Duel!
Both competitors draw almost too many of their Side Decked cards, leading to a slow-paced grind of a Duel that Charlie Overton eventually wins! One more Duel would decide who would move on with a 4-0 record.
Duel Thre
Ticheli activated Dimensional Fissure and Set two cards to his Spell and Trap Card Zone.
Overton had Beast King Barbaros; Gemini Spark; Reinforcement of the Army; Skill Drain; Solemn Warning; and Torrential Tribute. He activated Reinforcement to get Elemental HERO Neos Alius from his Deck, then Summoned Barbaros, and Set Skill Drain and Warning.
Ticheli passed.
Overton drew a second Skill Drain and Summoned Neos Alius. Alius attacked for 1900 Battle Damage, and when Barbaros attacked, Overton flipped Skill Drain: Ticheli Chained Compulsory Evacuation Device to bounce Barbaros away, avoiding 3000 Battle Damage. Overton Set Gemini Spark.
Ticheli Set another Spell or Trap.
Overton drew Solemn Judgment, but when he tried to Summon Barbaros again, Ticheli responded with Torrential Tribute! Overton Chained Gemini Spark, destroying Dimensional Fissure, then lost his Barbaros. He Set another Spell or Trap, then activated Prohibition, declaring Inzektor Hornet.
Ticheli tried to Summon Sangan, but Overton negated the Summon with Solemn Warning.
Overton drew Pot of Duality and activated it, choosing to add Elemental HERO Stratos to his hand over Gemini Spark and Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror. “I hate that card,” quipped Ticheli. Overton Summoned Stratos, attacking for 1800 Battle Damage. Another Set card to his back row ended Overton’s turn.
Ticheli activated Heavy Storm, but Overton negated it with Solemn Judgment! Ticheli Set a second Spell or Trap.
Overton drew and activated Mystical Space Typhoon, destroying Ticheli’s Set Book of Moon. He Chained it to turn Stratos face-down, but Overton Flip Summoned it immediately, attacking to bring the Duel to a tie: 2500 Life Points to 2500 Life Points.
Ticheli passed: he couldn’t set his last monster, Inzektor Hornet, because Prohibition kept him from doing so.
Overton activated Pot of Duality, revealing another Duality; Heavy Storm; and Beast King Barbaros. He added Barbaros to his hand, then tried to Summon it: Ticheli negated the Summon with Solemn Judgment, leaving Stratos to attack and finish the Match!
Prohibition keeps Dakota Ticheli from shielding his Life Points, and Charlie Overton takes advantage, applying as much pressure as he can to capitalize and and win the Match! Overton continues on with a 4-0 record, now two wins away from a guaranteed seat in the Top 16 tomorrow.
