Dragon Duel – Round 5: Nicole Tipple VS Clayton Hill

June 30th, 2012

Eleven year-old Clayton Hill traveled here this weekend from Arizona, to play Inzektors here in the Dragon Duel World Championship Qualifier!  His opponent is New Jersey’s Nicole Tipple, who you may remember from the coverage of the Dragon Duel at YCS Toronto, which Tipple won last September.  Tipple is piloting Dino-Rabbit.

Tipple opened with a hand of Tour Guide from the Underworld; Book of Moon; Mystical Space Typhoon; Solemn Warning; and two Forbidden Lance.  She Summoned Tour Guide, and Hill Chained Effect Veiler’s ability to stop Tour Guide’s effect.  Tipple Set two cards to her back row.

Hill Set a monster and two cards to his back row.

Tipple drew Spirit Reaper and activated Mystical Space Typhoon, destroying Hill’s Bottomless Trap Hole.  She Summoned Spirit Reaper, then stacked it with Tour Guide to Xyz Summon Number 17: Leviathan Dragon.  She detached Spirit Reaper to boost Leviathan Dragon to 2500 ATK, then attacked into Hill’s Set Sangan: that got him Inzektor Hornet.

Hill tried to Summon Inzektor Centipede, but lost out to Tipple’s Solemn Warning.  Hill Set a second Spell or Trap.

Tipple drew Macro Cosmos and attacked for 2500 Battle Damage, dropping Hill to 5500 Life Points.  Tipple Set two cards to her back row.

Hill drew for his turn, and Tipple flipped Macro Cosmos.  Hill shuffled his hand a moment, considering his options in light of Macro Cosmos, and Set a third Spell or Trap.

Tipple drew and tried to Summon Rescue Rabbit, but Hill negated the Summon with Solemn Warning.  Leviathan Dragon attacked again, and Hill was down to 1000 Life Points!

Hill Summoned Inzektor Hornet, then activated Inzektor Giga-Mantis’ effect, equipping it to Hornet.  Hornet’s effect then let it equip another Hornet, and Hill attacked Leviathan Dragon.  Tipple flipped Forbidden Lance, but Hill negated it with Solemn Judgment: Leviathan Dragon went down!

Tipple drew and Set a card to her back row.

Hill Summoned Inzektor Hopper and attacked for 1700 Battle Damage, then attacked with Hornet for an attempted 2900 Battle Damage… straight into Dimensional Prison!

Tipple drew Monster Reborn: she activated it to grab Inzektor Centipede, and attacked over Hornet with her second Forbidden Lance to win!

Hill started the second Duel with a Set monster, and activated Messenger of Peace.

Tipple had Jurrac Guiaba; Forbidden Lance; Starlight Road; Book of Moon; Solemn Warning; and Rescue Rabbit.  She Summoned the Rabbit and Special Summoned two copies of Kabazauls.  “Bunnybunnybunny,” said Hill, as Tipple Xyz Summoned Photon Papilloperative!  She activated its effect, flipping Spirit Reaper face-up and into Attack Position.  Hill activated Forbidden Lance on her own Papilloperative to let it attack, and hammered 1000 damage over Reaper.  She Set three cards to her back row.

Hill Set a monster.

Tipple drew Macro Cosmos, then used Photon Papilloperative’s effect to flip up Hill’s Set Inzektor Centipede.  She Set Macro Cosmos.

Hill drew; Tipple flipped Macro Cosmos; and Hill Xyz Summoned Wind-Up Zenmaines.  Or at least he tried to: Tipple negated the Summon with Solemn Warning.

Tipple drew Heavy Storm, looking at her three back row cards to Hill’s single Messenger of Peace: “You got Starlight?”

“I do, but I’m not using it.”

“You’re gonna blow it all away?”

“Yup.”  Tipple threw away her Starlight Road, Book of Moon, and Macro Cosmos, and attacked for 2100 Battle Damage.

Hill Summoned Inzektor Centipede, blowing away Photon Papilloperative with Inzektor Hornet and getting Inzektor Dragonfly to his hand from his Deck.  Centipede attacked for 1600 Battle Damage, and Hill had another Messenger of Peace!  He Set another Spell or Trap.

Tipple Summoned Jurrac Guaiba next turn and Set Forbidden Lance, but it was all over a turn later, as a flood of Inzektors ended the Duel in Hill’s favor.

“Double Messenger of Peace, really?”  Tipple gave a goodnatured laugh.  “All I needed to do was avoid Messenger of Peace.  I was going to Starlight, but I really needed to get rid of that.”  Hill guessed that Tipple was aggressive with the Heavy Storm because she only ran two Mystical Space Typhoons, which Tipple confirmed: “Exactly.  I couldn’t wait around for a Typhoon.”  It was a big risk, which Tipple understood when she made the move, but it just didn’t work out the way Tipple needed it to.DDFMatch-R5-Hill

Tipple opened the last Duel with Monster Reborn; Solemn Warning; Book of Moon; Sabersaurus; and two Tour Guide from the Underworld.  She Summoned a Tour Guide and got Sangan from her Deck, stacking both to Xyz Summon Wind-Up Zenmaines.  She Set two cards to her back row.

“Do you have Starlight Road?” asked Hill.

“No,” replied Tipple, ambiguously.

Hill went for it, activating Heavy Storm, clearing away Tipple’s Book of Moon and Solemn Warning.  “Thank you!  So honest.”  Hill Summoned Tour Guide from the Underworld to Special Summon another from his Deck: he Xyz Summoned Wind-Up Zenmaines, then Set three cards to his back row.

Tipple drew Thunder King Rai-Oh, then Normal Summoned her second Tour Guide, to Special Summon the third.  She stacked them to Xyz Summon Temtempo the Percussion Djinn, but lost it to Bottomless Trap Hole.  Both Duelists each had a Zenmaines on the table.

Hill Summoned Thunder King Rai-Oh and ended.

Tipple drew Sabersaurus and Summoned her Thunder King Rai-Oh, trading it off in battle against Hill’s Thunder King.  She brought back Hill’s Thunder King with Monster Reborn in Main Phase 2.

Hill attacked Thunder King Rai-Oh with Zenmaines, detaching a Material and Setting a monster before destroying Thunder King in the End Phase.

Tipple drew Compulsory Evacuation Device and tried to Summon Rescue Rabbit, losing it to Solemn Warning.  She Set Compulsory.

Hill destroyed it with Mystical Space Typhoon, and rammed Tipple’s Zenmaines with his own.  In the End Phase, he targeted Tipple’s Zenmaines with his own Zenmaines’ effect.  When Tipple used her Zenmaines to destroy Hill’s Set back row card, he Chained it: it was Safe Zone, and Hill targeted Tipple’s Zenmaines to eliminate it.

Tipple passed, and took 2500 Battle Damage from Hill’s Zenmaines and Sangan next turn.

Tipple drew Sabersaurus and attacked Zenmaines, destroying it.  She Set Forbidden Lance.

Hill Set a monster and turned Sangan to Defense Position.

Tipple Summoned Kabazauls and Xyz Summoned Evolzar Dolkka, attacking to destroy Sangan and negating its effect.

Hill Set a monster and Set a card to his Spell and Trap Card Zone.

Tipple attacked to destroy Hill’s Set Inzektor Hopper.  She Set a Spell or Trap.

Hill Summoned Inzektor Dragonfly to try and use its effect, but Tippled Chained Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror.  Hill Special Summoned Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning and didn’t attack.

Tipple Set a Spell or Trap and flipped Macro Cosmos, putting Dolkka in Defense Position.  She set Solemn Warning.

Hill activated Monster Reborn to bring back Tour Guide, then stacked it with Dragonfly to Xyz Summon Number 30: Acid Golem of Destruction.  Tipple blasted it with Solemn Warning.

Tipple drew Forbidden Lance and attacked Soldier with Dolkka to power over it with the Lance.

Hill passed.

Tipple attacked directly with Dolkka, dropping Hill to 2800 Life Points.

Hill Summoned Inzektor Centipede and Set a Spell or Trap.

Tipple Summoned Sabersaurus, and lost her field to Torrential Tribute!

Hill Set a Spell or Trap.

Tipple Set a Spell or Trap.

Hill passed.

Tipple tried to Summon Thunder King Rai-Oh: Hill responded with Solemn Warning: Tipple Chained Solemn Judgment; and Hill Chained his own Solemn Judgment!  Thunder King Rai-Oh went down, and the Duel stood at 400 to 1750 Life Points.

Hill Set a monster.

Tipple Summoned Jurrac Guaiba and attacked into Book of Moon.

Hill Summoned Inzektor Dragonfly, then Flip Summoned Hornet.  Hornet attacked to destroy Jurrac Guaiba with Hornet, and didn’t make an attack with Dragonfly.  Hill Xyz Summoned Number 17: Leviathan Dragon.

Tipple passed.

Hill Set a monster and ended.

Tipple Summoned Sabersaurus and attacked to destroy Hill’s Set Hornet, banishing it with Macro Cosmos.

Hill Summoned Inzektor Centipede, then attcked into Dimensional Prison with Leviathan Dragon: Hill Chained Safe Zone, trying to keep Leviathan Dragon safe!  Play was moving too fast, and neither competitor realized that Safe Zone can’t protect from cards that are already targeting by the time Safe Zone is activated.  As a result, Hill was able to attack directly with Inzektor Centipede, ending the Match without either Duelist realizing the error!
Clayton HIll moves on at 4-1.
