Dragon Duel WCQ – Round 3: David Munoz vs. Michael Pari

June 30th, 2012

Michael Pari is twelve years old, and traveled here this weekend from Arlington, Virginia to make his bid for Tokyo with Chaos Dragons! His opponent is David Munoz, an eleven year-old competitor from Boca, Florida. Munoz is playing Dino Rabbits, so this match-up may not be in his favor. He’s going to have to make all the right moves to outplay Pari’s bigger monsters.

Duel One

Pari opened the Match with a hand of Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon, Chaos Sorcerer, Tour Guide from the Underworld, Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning, Effect Veiler, and Eclipse Wyvern. He Summoned Tour Guide and activated her effect, but her effect was negated by Munoz’s Effect Veiler.

Munoz Summoned Kabazauls to attack and destroy Tour Guide, then Set a Spell or Trap.

Pari drew Dark Armed Dragon and Set Eclipse Wyvern.

Munoz Summoned Tour Guide from the Underworld, and it was Pari’s turn to use Effect Veiler and stop the effect. Kabazauls attacked Eclipse, and Pari banished Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon (REDMD) from his Deck with Eclipse’s effect.

Pari drew Lightpulsar Dragon and banished Wyvern and Tour Guide from the Graveyard, Summoning Chaos Sorcerer. He used its effect to banish Kabazauls, and added REDMD to his hand with Eclipse Wyvern’s effect.

Munoz Normal Summoned Sabersaurus, then activated Monster Reborn targeting his Kabazauls. He Summoned it, then stacked his two Dinosaurs for Evolzar Laggia. Laggia attacked over Sorcerer, and Tour Guide made a direct attack for a total of 1100 Battle Damage. Pari dropped to 5200 Life Points.

Pari drew Tour Guide from the Underworld and tried to Summon her. After some thought, Munoz negated the Summon with Laggia’s ability. Pari banished Veiler and Tour Guide for Lightpulsar Dragon, and attacked Laggia to destroy it!

Munoz turned Tour Guide to Defense Position, then ended.

Pari drew Heavy Storm and attacked Tour Guide with Lightpulsar, destroying her.

Munoz banished Tour Guide and Effect Veiler from his Graveyard to Special Summon Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning! Munoz banished Lightpulsar Dragon with the Soldier’s effect, then made a direct attack with Sabersaurus. The Duel stood at 3300 Life Points to 7300, in Munoz’s favor.

Pari drew Gorz the Emissary of Darkness and activated Heavy Storm, destroying Munoz’s Solemn Judgment. He ended, holding the Gorz.

Munoz attacked with Sabersaurus, and Pari Special Summoned Gorz in Defense Position, along with a 1900 DEF Emissary of Darkness Token. Black Luster Soldier destroyed both Gorz and Token with attacks.

Pari drew another Tour Guide from the Underworld, and Summoned her to Special Summon Sangan from his Deck. He combined them to Xyz Summon Number 30: Acid Golem of Destruction, and attacked to destroy Sabersaurus. Munoz took control of the Golem next turn, and made a direct attack with Black Luster Soldier to finish Duel 1!

David Munoz keeps Pari from building his Graveyard, stranding a fistful of big monsters in Michael Pari’s hand! Pari just couldn’t get his biggest monsters into the Duel, so there was no way he could win. Both Duelists flew to their Side Decks before starting the second Duel.

Duel Two

Pari opened Duel 2 with Charge of the Light Brigade, Pot of Avarice, Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter, Chaos Sorcerer, Book of Moon, and Darkflare Dragon. Charge sent Tour Guide from the Underworld, Sangan, and Monster Reborn to the Graveyard, and Pari searched his Deck for Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress. He Set Ryko and Book.

Munoz Summoned Rescue Rabbit, but Pari turned it face-down with Book of Moon! Munoz Set two cards to his Spell and Trap Card Zone.

Pari drew Tour Guide from the Underworld, and tried to Summon Lyla. Munoz stopped the Summon with Solemn Warning, but lost his Set Macro Cosmos moments later to the effect of Ryko. Ryko sent Royal Decree, another Ryko, and Thunder King Rai-Oh to Pari’s Graveyard. Pari Summoned Tour Guide, Special Summoned another, and banished Thunder King and Sangan to Special Summon Chaos Sorcerer. He stacked the Tour Guides for Leviair the Sea Dragon, using it to Special Summon Thunder King, and moved to the Battle Phase. Ryko attacked to destroy Rabbit, and then Leviair, Thunder King, and Sorcerer all made direct attacks: Munoz was down to 2000 Life Points. He drew to four cards in hand with a cleared field, and conceded the second Duel.

“That Book won me the game,” commented Pari.

“I opened up vanillas,” cringed Munoz, moving on with a friendly smile and then taking a deep breath before shuffling his Deck. “Normally I don’t open up like that!” Both Duelists laughed as they prepared for the last Duel.

Duel Three

Munoz opened up the last Duel with Thunder King Rai-Oh, then Set two cards to his Spell and Trap Card Zone.

Pari had Heavy Storm, Chain Disappearance, Monster Reborn, Royal Decree, Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter, and Effect Veiler. He activated Heavy Storm, destroying Munoz’s Torrential Tribute and Macro Cosmos! He Set Ryko, then Set Disappearance and Decree.

Munoz activated Mystical Space Typhoon, destroying Decree. Thunder King attacked into Ryko, Thunder King was destroyed, and Pari sent Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon, Dark Hole, and Pot of Avarice to the Graveyard. Munoz Set a monster.

Pari drew Lightpulsar Dragon. He Special Summoned REDMD from his Graveyard, then Special Summoned Lightpulsar Dragon from his hand with REDMD’s ability. Lightpulsar attacked, destroying Munoz’s Set Sangan, and Munoz got Rescue Rabbit from his Deck. REDMD attacked, and Munoz Special Summoned Gorz the Emissary of Darkness and an Emissary of Darkness Token!

Munoz turned Gorz and the Token to Attack Position, and attacked to destroy Lightpulsar Dragon, then to trade his Token for REDMD in battle (destroying both). Munoz Summoned Rabbit in Main Phase 2, but Chain Disappearance banished it, as well as both other copies from his Deck!

Pari drew Mystical Space Typhoon, adding it to his hand of Effect Veiler. He Set Typhoon.

Munoz Summoned Tour Guide from the Underworld and lost her effect to Effect Veiler. Still, Gorz and Tour Guide both made direct attacks. Munoz Set Forbidden Lance, and Pari destroyed it with Typhoon.

Pari drew Tour Guide from the Underworld! He Summoned it, then Special Summoned another from his Deck to Xyz Summon Number 30: Acid Golem of Destruction. Pari used it to attack over Tour Guide for a quick 2000 Battle Damage.

Munoz turned Gorz to Defense Position, then Set a monster.

Pari drew and activated Charge of the Light Brigade, using it to send Ryko, Solar Recharge, and Card Trooper to the Graveyard. He searched his Deck to add Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter to his hand, and Set it. Acid Golem (now with just one Xyz Material) attacked Gorz, destroying it.

Munoz Summoned Kabazauls, and Flip Summoned another to Xyz Summon Evolzar Dolkka! It attacked Ryko, negating its effect, and Munoz Set a back row card.

Pari willingly took 2000 damage for his Acid Golem, but when it attacked, Munoz flipped Compulsory Evacuation Device to bounce the Golem away! Munoz attacked for the win moments later.

David Munoz overcomes the challenge of Chaos Dragons, narrowly capturing the third Duel with Dino Rabbit! Munoz moves on with a 3-0 record.
