Round 11: Brian Hines vs. James Colburn

Brian Hines is using an Anti Monster Deck with Thunder King Rai-Oh and Genex Ally Birdman, and currently holds an 8-2 record in the tournament. His Round 11 opponent is James Colburn and his Wind-Up Deck! A victory here will secure one of these Duelists a spot in the Top 64, while the other is sent packing.

Duel One

Hines opened up with Allure of Darkness, Bottomless Trap Hole, Dark Armed Dragon, Mirror Force, Smashing Ground, and Spirit Reaper. He activated Allure of Darkness to draw Mystical Space Typhoon and Mind Control and banished Dark Armed Dragon from his hand. He Set Spirit Reaper, Mystical Space Typhoon, and Bottomless Trap Hole before ending his turn.

Colburn Set a Book of Moon and Hines destroyed it with Mystical Space Typhoon in the End Phase.

Hines drew Effect Veiler next turn. He Flip Summoned Spirit Reaper and attacked to knock Maxx “C” out of Colburn’s hand.

Colburn activated Wind-Up Factory and then Normal Summoned Wind-Up Magician. He Special Summoned 2 Wind-Up Sharks from his hand next, (one after another, not simultaneously) and Hines banished one with Bottomless Trap Hole. Magician’s effect activated to Special Summon Wind-Up Hunter to the field, and Wind-Up Factory allowed Colburn to get a Wind-Up Rat from his Deck. Colburn Tributed his Magician to force Hines to send Smashing Ground from his hand to his Graveyard with Wind-Up Hunter, and then Colburn reduced his Shark to Level 3 and combined it with his Hunter to Xyz Summon Wind-Up Zenmaines. He attacked over Reaper with Zenmaines and Hines lost 1200 Life Points. Next, Colburn used Dark Hole, and Hines Chained Effect Veiler to negate Zenmaines’ effect. Zenmaines and Reaper were destroyed.

Hines drew Solemn Judgment and Set it along with Mind Control.

Wind-Up Rat but Hines negated its Summon with Solemn Judgment by paying 3400 Life Points.

Hines drew a monster and Set it.

Colburn Special Summoned Cyber Dragon and attacked Hines’s face-down monster; but Hines flipped Mirror Force to destroy Cyber Dragon!

Hines drew Tour Guide From the Underworld and then Flip Summoned Gravekeeper’s Spy. Colburn negated the Spy’s effect with Effect Veiler and then Colburn Summoned Tour Guide and used its effect to Special Summon Tour Bus From the Underworld from his Deck! He combined Tour Guide with Tour Bus to Xyz Summon Leviair the Sea Dragon and then detached Tour Bus to Special Summon Wind-Up Shark. Tour Bus’s effect returned Colburn’s Wind-Up Hunter from his Graveyard to his Deck, out of the reach of a potential Rat. Next, Hines combined Wind-Up Shark with Gravekeeper’s Spy to Xyz Summon Number 39: Utopia, and attacked directly with Leviair the Sea Dragon and Number 39: Utopia to drop Colburn down to 3400 Life Points.

Colburn Set a monster, but it was all over on the next turn. Hines activated Mind Control to take control of Colburn’s face-down Spirit Reaper and then attacked directly with Utopia and Leviair to win the Duel!

Duel Two

Colburn started off Duel 2 by Setting a card to his back row.

Hines opened up with Monster Reborn, Thunder King Rai-Oh, Maxx “C”, Genex Ally Birdman, Solemn Judgment, and Heavy Storm. He used Heavy Storm to destroy Colburn’s face-down Dimensional Prison and then Summoned Thunder King Rai-Oh. He attacked directly with it to drop Colburn down to 6100 Life Points and then Set Monster Reborn and Solemn Judgment in Main Phase 2.

Colburn activated Heavy Storm and Hines used Solemn Judgment to negate it by paying 4000 Life Points! Next, Colburn used Smashing Ground to destroy Rai-Oh and ended his turn.

Hines drew another Thunder King Rai-Oh next turn. He Summoned it and used Monster Reborn to revive the one that was destroyed on the previous turn. He attacked with a Rai-Oh, but Colburn Special Summoned Emissary of Darkness Gorz! Hines Special Summoned Birdman in Main Phase 2 by returning a Rai-Oh to his hand, and Tuned it with his other Rai-Oh to Synchro Summon Black Rose Dragon and destroy Gorz and the Emissary of Darkness Token.

Colburn Summoned Sangan and attacked directly with it. He Set 2 cards before passing.

Hines tried to Summon Thunder King Rai-Oh; but Colburn negated its Summon by paying 2100 Life Points with Solemn Judgment.

Colburn attacked directly with Sangan and Set a back row.

Hines drew Bottomless Trap Hole. He Set Sangan and Bottomless before ending his turn.

Colburn activated Dark Hole to destroy his own Sangan and Hines’s face-down Sangan, and both effects of Sangan activated. Hines added Effect Veiler to his hand with Sangan’s effect, and Colburn added Tour Guide to his hand. He Summoned Tour Guide and tried to use its effect, but Hines discarded Effect Veiler to negate it. Tour Guide attacked Hines directly to bring him down to 1000 Life Points.

Hines drew Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer and Summoned it. He attacked Tour Guide with it, and Colburn lost 800 Life Points. Two monsters were banished from his Graveyard by Kycoo’s effect.

Colburn Special Summoned Cyber Dragon and Hines flipped Bottomless Trap Hole to banish it. Next, Colburn activated Monster Reborn to Special Summon Thunder King Rai-Oh, and Hines Chained Maxx “C” to draw Mystical Space Typhoon from the top of his Deck when Thunder King was Summoned. Colburn activated Smashing Ground to destroy Kycoo and then attacked directly with Rai-Oh to end the Duel!

Duel Three

Hines opened up with 2 copies of Mystical Space Typhoon, Sangan, Tour Guide From the Underworld, Chaos Sorcerer, and Mirror Force. He Set Sangan and Mirror Force before passing.

Colburn Special Summoned Cyber Dragon and attacked Hines’s face-down Sangan to destroy it. Hines added Maxx “C” from his Deck to his hand with its effect. Colburn passed without a back row.

Hines drew Bottomless Trap Hole. He Summoned Tour Guide From the Underworld and activated its effect; but Colburn negated it with Effect Veiler. Hines Set Bottomless Trap Hole before ending his turn.

Colburn used Heavy Storm to destroy Hines’s Mirror Force and Bottomless Trap Hole! He attacked Tour Guide with Cyber Dragon to destroy it, and Set 2 cards to his back row in Main Phase 2.

Hines drew Monster Reborn. He activated both copies of Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Colburn’s face-down Torrential Tribute and Dimensional Prison and then used Monster Reborn to Special Summon Sangan from his Graveyard in Defense Position.

Colburn attacked Sangan with Cyber Dragon and Hines added Genex Ally Birdman from his Deck to his hand with its effect.

Hines drew Solemn Warning and then Summoned Birdman. He fused it to Cyber Dragon to Summon Chimeratech Fortress Dragon, Set Solemn Warning, and ended his turn.

Colburn activated Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Hines’s face-down Solemn Warning and then Summoned Tour Guide From the Underworld. He activated its effect, and Hines Chained Maxx “C” to draw a card when Colburn Special Summoned Sangan from his Deck. Colburn combined his Sangan and his Tour Guide to Xyz Summon Number 17: Leviathan Dragon and used its effect to give it a 500 ATK boost. Leviathan Dragon attacked and destroyed Chimeratech Fortress Dragon.

Hines Set 2 back rows and passed.

Colburn attacked with his Leviathan Dragon to drop Hines down to 3900 Life Points. He Set a back row before passing.

Hines drew and Set Spirit Reaper.

Colburn attacked Hines’s face-down Spirit Reaper, flipping it face-up.

Hines drew a card and passed.

Colburn drew and passed.

Hines drew and passed.

Colburn Set a back row.

Hines drew Effect Veiler and passed.

Colburn Summoned Tour Guide From the Underworld and used its effect to Special Summon another Tour Guide from his Deck. Hines flipped Torrential Tribute to clear the field! Both Tour Guides, Leviathan Dragon, and Spirit Reaper were destroyed! Time in the round was called, and the overtime turns began. Colburn activated Monster Reborn to Special Summon Cyber Dragon from his Graveyard and then tried attacking directly with it; but Hines flipped Book of Moon to put Cyber Dragon face-down.

Hines activated Heavy Storm to destroy Colburn’s face-down Solemn Warning and Dimensional Prison. Then he Special Summoned Cyber Dragon and Normal Summoned Thunder King Rai-Oh. Rai-Oh attacked and destroyed Colburn’s Cyber Dragon, and then Cyber Dragon attacked directly; but Colburn Special Summoned Gorz the Emissary of Darkness in Defense Position with a 2100 DEF Emissary of Darkness Token!

Colburn switched his Gorz and Emissary of Darkness Token to Attack Position and then attacked over Rai-Oh with his Token and attacked over Cyber Dragon with Gorz to drop Hines down to 3100 Life Points. Colburn Set 2 cards to his back row before passing.

Hines banished Rai-Oh and Birdman from his Graveyard to Special Summon Chaos Sorcerer, banished the Token, and then Normal Summoned Tour Guide From the Underworld. He used its effect to Special Summon Tour Bus from his Deck and combined his Tour Guide with his Tour Bus to Summon Leviair the Sea Dragon. He detached Tour Guide from Leviair to Special Summon Genex Ally Birdman and then Tuned it with Chaos Sorcerer to Summon Locomotion R-Genex! Locomotion R-Genex took control of Gorz with its effect, and then Leviair, Locomotion, and Gorz attacked directly to win the Duel! Colburn revealed his face-down Royal Decree and Mystical Space Typhoon and then offered the handshake.
