Quarterfinal: Sorosh Saberian VS Jordan Koruntoff
Wind-Ups and Geargia are two of the most successful Decks in this tournament, and they’re going head to head here in the Quarterfinals! This is Sorosh Saberian’s fifth appearance in the playoffs of a YCS, but he’s never won one. He’s playing Wind-Ups, Jordan Koruntoff is running Geargias. Both of these Duelists are from right here in Toronto, but only one could proceed to the Top 4!
Koruntoff started us off by Summoning Geargiarsenal, Tributing it to Special Summon Geargiarmor. He turned it face-down with its effect, then Set a Spell or Trap Card to his back row.
Saberian started with a hand of Bottomless Trap Hole; Wind-Up Factory; Dimensional Prison; Mystical Space Typhoon; Tour Guide from the Underworld; and Solemn Judgment. He activated Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Koruntoff’s Set Solemn Warning, and Summoned Tour Guide to Special Summon another copy. He Xyz Summoned Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity to Special Summon Wind-Up Rabbit, and got Wind-Up Shark with the Factory. He Set Judgment, Prison, and Bottomless.
Koruntoff drew for his turn, and Saberian banished Rabbit to trigger Factory’s effect, getting Wind-Up Magician. Koruntoff Flip Summoned Geargiarmor, getting Geargiaccelerator from his Deck. He Special Summoned it, then Normal Summoned Machina Gearframe to get Machina Fortress from his Deck. He Xyz Summoned Gear Gigant X, but Saberian banished it with Bottomless Trap Hole, leaving Koruntoff to Special Summon another Geargiaccelerator for another Gear Gigant X! He detached Geargiarmor to get Machina Peacekeeper from his Deck, then discarded it and Machina Fortress to Special Summon the Fortress. Gigant X attacked to destroy Zenmaity, and Fortress attacked into Prison. Koruntoff Set two cards to his back row.
Saberian drew Spirit Reaper and Special Summoned back his Wind-Up Rabbit. He Summoned Magician, and Special Summoned Shark, getting Wind-Up Rat to his hand with Factory and Special Summoning another Wind-Up Magician with the first. Saberian reduced Shark to Level 3 to Special Summon a Rat with the second Magician, then stacked the two Magicians to Xyz Summon Photon Papilloperative. Koruntoff banished it with Bottomless Trap Hole, keeping Saberian from turning his on-field Rat to Attack Position and using its effect. He stacked Rabbit and Shark for Leviair the Sea Dragon; Koruntoff responded with Fiendish Chain; and Saberian negated it with Solemn Judgment. Leviair brought back his Rat, which brought back Magician, and Saberian Special Summoned Shark from his hand. He Special Summoned Wind-Up Hunter with Magician’s effect, then sent Magician to the Graveyard to make Koruntoff drop his last card: Geargiarsenal. He had nothing left but the Gear Gigant X. Saberian Xyz Summoned Number 17: Leviathan Dragon to run over Gear Gigant X, then made a direct attack with Leviair. Shark sat in Defense Position.
Koruntoff topdecked Monster Reborn, and activated it to bring back Geargiaccelerator. It attacked to destroy Shark.
Saberian drew Wind-Up Magician and Summoned Spirit Reaper. Everything attacked, dropping Koruntoff to 2800 Life Points. Koruntoff Set a card to his Spell and Trap Card Zone, and Saberian attacked with no fear next turn to end the Duel!
Koruntoff opened the second Duel with Pot of Duality, revealing Rivalry of Warlords; Machina Gearframe; and Geargiaccelerator. He took the Gearframe, Summoning it to get Machina Fortress from his Deck. He Set two cards to his back row.
Saberian had a hand of Bottomless Trap Hole; Solemn Warning; Wind-Up Magician; Prohibition; and two Wind-Up Rabbit. He Set Hole, Warning, Rabbit, and activated Prohibition, declaring Gear Gigant X.
Koruntoff flipped Heavy Storm next turn, and Chained Compulsory Evacuation Device to bounce away Saberian’s face-down Magician! He Normal Summoned Geargiaccelerator and attacked with both of his monsters, then brought out Gear Gigant X in Main Phase 2. That got him another Gearframe, and he Set two more cards to his back row.
Saberian drew Bottomless Trap Hole and Summoned Wind-Up Rabbit. He Set Bottomless.
Koruntoff got a Geargiaccelerator with his Gear Gigant X, then Summoned Gearframe to get another Machina Fortress. He discarded both Fortresses to Special Summon one, and when Saberian’s Bottomless Trap Hole was negated by Solemn Judgment, Saberian immediately conceded!
Jordan Koruntoff takes the second Duel in just three turns, smashing his way back into the Match!
Saberian started off what might be his last Duel of the tournament with Wind-Up Rabbit; Starlight Road; Dimensional Fissure; Wind-Up Shark; Dimensional Prison; and Dust Tornado. He Set the Traps, then Summoned Wind-Up Rabbit and activated Dimensional Fissure.
Koruntoff Summoned Geargiaccelerator and Set four cards to his back row.
Saberian drew Mystical Space Typhoon and Summoned Shark. It attacked Geargiaccelerator, but Koruntoff used Forbidden Lance to bring Shark’s ATK down to 700. Shark was destroyed.
Koruntoff attacked into Dimensional Prison, losing his Geargiaccelerator.
Saberian drew Dark Hole and made a direct attack with Wind-Up Rabbit.
Koruntoff passed.
Saberian drew Spirit Reaper and Summoned it, knowing he had Starlight Road in case of Mirror Force or Torrential Tribute. Reaper struck, forcing Koruntoff to banish Machina Cannon, and Rabbit made a direct attack again.
Koruntoff Set a monster, then another spell or trap. He lost that card, Dark Hole, to Mystical Space Typhoon in his End Phase.
Saberian drew Mystical Space Typhoon and activated Dark Hole: Koruntoff had no response, but Saberian dodged with Rabbit, destroying his Reaper and Koruntoff’s Geargiaccelerator. He Set the Mystical Space Typhoon.
Koruntoff Summoned Machina Gearframe and got Machina Fortress from his Deck, attacking for 1800 Battle Damage.
Saberian drew Soul Taker and Special Summoned back his Wind-Up Rabbit, then destroyed Gearframe with Soul Taker. Rabbit made a direct attack.
Koruntoff Set a monster.
Saberian drew Compulsory Evacuation Device and Set it.
Koruntoff Set a fourth Spell or Trap Card.
Saberian drew Messenger of Peace and passed.
Koruntoff Set a fifth Spell or Trap.
Saberian drew Solemn Judgment and activated Mystical Space Typhoon, destroying the newest Set in Koruntoff’s back row: Solemn Judgment.
Koruntoff Set a second monster.
Saberian drew Heavy Storm.
Koruntoff Flip Summoned Geargiarmor, getting Geargiaccelerator from his Deck. He Special Summoned Geargiaccelerator in Defense Position, then Xyz Summoned Gear Gigant X: Saberian bounced it back to the Extra Deck with Compulsory.
Saberian drew Wind-Up Magician. He Summoned it, then banished Rabbit to trigger Magician’s effect, Special Summoning another Rabbit from his Deck.
Koruntoff activated Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Saberian’s Dimensional Fissure. He pitched two Machina Fortresses to Special Summon one of them, then Normal Summoned Geargiarsenal. Fortress attacked Magician, and Saberian banished it with Wind-Up Rabbit. Fortress attacked Rabbit off the replay, destroying it, and Geargiarsenal made a direct attack. Saberian dropped to 3900 Life Points, while Koruntoff had 4500 remaining. He Tributed Geargiarsenal in Main Phase 2 to Special Summon Geargiarmor, turning it face-down.
Saberian drew Mystical Space Typhoon and brought back his Magician. He activated Messenger of Peace after some considerable time spent thinking about his conundrum.
Koruntoff Flip Summoned Geargiarmor and got Geargiarsenal from his Deck. He Normal Summoned it, then stacked it with Geargiarmor for Gear Gigant X. That got him Machina Gearframe from his Deck, and he Set a fifth Spell or Trap Card.
Saberian drew Wind-Up Rat and let his Messenger of Peace expire from the field. Koruntoff flipped Compulsory Evacuation Device to target Wind-Up Magician, and Saberian had no response: it was returned to his hand. He flipped Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Koruntoff’s Torrential Tribute, then played another from his hand to destroy Solemn Warning. He activated Heavy Storm next, threatening Koruntoff’s two remaining cards, but Koruntoff had Starlight Road! He Chained it, bringing out Stardust Dragon and negating the Heavy Storm! Saberian Summoned Wind-Up Rat, but Koruntoff tried to bounce it away with another Compulsory: Saberian Chained Solemn Judgment to keep his Rat on the field, and Special Summoned back another Wind-Up Rabbit. He banished Rat with a Rabbit, then made Leviair the Sea Dragon to Special Summon it back, Special Summoning back the Rabbit he detached for Leviair’s effect. He stacked those next, Xyz Summoning Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity to Special Summon another Rat. That let Saberian Special Summon another Rat, and he Xyz Summoned Number 30: Acid Golem of Destruction. Acid Golem ran over Gigant X.
Play was back to Koruntoff, who activated Monster Reborn to bring back a second Machina Fortress. He attacked to destroy Leviair, then ran his second Fortress into Acid Golem to destroy it with Fortress’ effect. Stardust took down Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity. It was all over a turn later, as Saberian topdecked Torrential Tribute and Koruntoff refused to play into it, simply attacking to end the Match!.
