Round 7 Feature Match: Justin Ashe Versus Robert Pleines

October 21st, 2012

Robert Pleines is one of what appears to be a relative few Inzektor Duelists remaining in this tournament, but the ones that are still here are doing quite well.  Pleines has a 5-1 record headed into this Round, piloting the theme that Billy Brake brought back into the spotlight with a Top 8 finish at YCS Indianapolis.

But Pleines has his work cut out for him this Round!  His opponent is Justin Ashe, a Gravekeeper Duelist!  If Pleines isn’t careful, Necrovalley could prove to be his total undoing.  This is not an easy match-up for Pleines.

Pleines opened the Match with Inzektor Centipede, and equipped it with Ladybug.  Ashe hit it with Effect Veiler, detaching the Ladybug, and Pleines attached Centipede with Inzektor Giga-Mantis.

Ashe’s hand was Compulsory Evacuation Device; Pot of Duality; Solemn Judgment; Pot of Duality; Royal Tribute; and Necrovalley.  He activated Duality, revealing Book of Moon, Gravekeeper’s Stele, and another Duality: he added the Duality to his hand.  Ashe then activated Necrovalley; Set everything but the Duality; and activated Royal Tribute, forcing Pleines to discard his entier hand of Inzektor Centipede, Maxx “C”, and Ladybug!

Pleines attacked with Centipede, and Ashe took the 2400 Battle Damage.  Pleines then Set a Spell or Trap.

Ashe drew Gravekeeper’s Stele, then played Pot of Duality to pick from Solemn Warning, Royal Tribute, and Gravekeeper’s Descendant.  He added Descendant to his hand and shuffled the rest back.  He tried to Summon Descendant, but lost out to Pleines’ Solemn Warning.

WarningDescendant

Pleines attacked with Centipede again, but Ashe blocked it by bouncing the Centipede back to Pleines’ hand with Compulsory Evacuation Device.  Pleines lost his Giga-Mantis.

Ashe drew and Summoned Gravekeeper’s Assailant, attacking for 2000 Battle Damage.  The Duel stood at 4000 Life Points to 5600, with Ashe leading.

Pleines cleared the field with Dark Hole, then tried to Normal Summon Inzektor Centipede: Ashe negated it with Solemn Judgment.

Ashe drew Cardcar D!  He flipped Gravekeeper’s Stele to return Assailant and Descendant to his hand, and Summoned Descendant to attack for another 2000 Battle Damage.  Now the score was 2000 Life Points to 2800, and when Pleines was topdecked an Inzektor Sword – Zektkaliber next turn with nothing to attach it to, he conceded.

Justin Ashe opens up this Match with a devastating Royal Tribute and never looks back!  Pleines gave a groan as he went for his Side Deck.  “Let’s see… how am I gonna beat that Deck.”  The pressure was on.  Necrovalley can cause alot of damage to the recurring combo plays Inzektors depend on, and now Pleines had to win two Duels back-to-back to keep his X-1 record.

Pleines Set a monster, then Set a Spell or Trap to start Game 2.

Ashe had Torrential Tribute; Skill Drain; Gravekeeper’s Descendant; Royal Tribute; Dark Hole; and Effect Veiler.  He Set Torrential.

Pleines Flip Summoned Sangan and attacked for 1000 Battle Damage.  He Set another Spell or Trap.

Ashe drew Mystical Space Typhoon and Set Descendant, then Set three cards to his back row.

Pleines Normal Summoned Inzektor Hornet.  He stacked it with Sangan to Xyz Summon Number 17: Leviathan Dragon, leading Ashe to flip Torrential Tribute.  He destroyed the Dragon and his Descendant.  Pleines activated Call of the Haunted moments later, targeting Sangan, but Ashe Chained Mystical Space Typhoon.  Pleines pressed on!  He Special Summoned Sangan back with Monster Reborn and attacked for another 1000 Battle Damage.  He Set a second Spell or Trap and ended with two cards in hand.

Ashe drew Book of Moon; Set it; and lost it to Pleines’ Mystical Space Typhoon in the End Phase.

Pleines Summoned Inzektor Ladybug and activated its effect, equipping it with Inzektor Hornet from the Graveyard.  Ashe activated Skill Drain, but Pleines Chained his last Set card – Solemn Judgment!  Both monsters made direct attacks.  Ashe was down to 3000 Life Points, while Pleines had 4000.

Ashe Summoned Gravekeeper’s Descendant and attacked to destroy Ladybug, dropping Pleines to 3500 Life Points.

Pleines Summoned Inzektor Centipede, and equipped it with Hornet!  Ashe played Effect Veiler to knock the Hornet away, but Centipede ran over Gravekeeper’s Descendant and Sangan made a direct attack.  Pleines Set another Spell or Trap Card.

Ashe drew Gravekeeper’s Spy, holding Dark Hole and Royal Tribute.  He Set the Spy, ignoring the threat of Inzektor Hornet.  Pleines used Hornet with Centipede next turn to blow away Spy and get Inzektor Sword – Zektkaliber from his Deck, then equipped Centipede with it, and attacked to win the second Duel!

Robert Pleines mounts a comeback, and presses the Match to a third Duel!

Ashe’s hand was Mirror Force; Gravekeeper’s Assailant; Gravekeeper’s Stele; Royal Tribute; Skill Drain; and Solemn Warning.  He Set Warning and Drain, and Set Assailant.

Pleines blasted Skill Drain with Mystical Space Typhoon next turn, then Set two cards to his back row and Set a monster.

Ashe drew another Skill Drain.  He Summoned Assailant, then Set his second Drain and Mirror Force.

Pleines Set a second monster, and a third Spell or Trap.

Ashe drew Pot of Duality and used it to reveal Gravekeeper’s Spy, Mystical Space Typhoon, and Necrovalley from the top of his Deck.  He added Necrovalley to his hand, then shuffled the rest back to his Deck.  Ashe activated Necrovalley and ended, still not willing to attack.

Pleines played a Pot of Duality of his own next turn, picking Gemini Imps over Forbidden Lance and Inzektor Ladybug.

Ashe drew Gravekeeper’s Spy and Set it.

Pleines activated Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Necrovalley, and Flip Summoned Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter to try and destroy Ashe’s Set Gravekeeper’s Spy: Ashe responded with Solemn Warning to negate the Summon.  Pleines activated Dark Hole, destroying his own Sangan as well as Gravekeeper’s Spy and Gravekeeper’s Assailant!  Sangan got him Inzektor Hornet from his Deck.  He Special Summoned Sangan with Call of the Haunted and attacked for 1000 Battle Damage.

Ashe drew Gravekeeper’s Commandant.  The Duel stood at 8000 Life Points to Ashe’s 5000.  He pitched Commandant to get another Necrovalley, then retrieved his Spy and Commandant with Gravekeeper’s Stele.  He Set Spy.

Pleines Set a monster and switched Sangan to Defense Position.

Ashe drew Dimensional Prison and Flip Summoned Gravekeeper’s Spy, Special Summoning Gravekeeper’s Recruiter from his Deck.  He activated Necrovalley, then attacked with Recruiter… into Pleines’ Set Mystic Tomato.  Tomato was destroyed and Ashe got to Special Summon Inzektor Dragonfly!  Ashe attacked it with his buffed-up Spy, but Pleines had Forbidden Lance, which let Dragonfly win the battle!  Ashe Set another Spell or Trap.

Pleines tried to equip Dragonfly with Hornet on the following turn, but Ashe flipped Skill Drain!  Pleines Xyz Summoned Number 30: Acid Golem of Destruction.  He attacked Recruiter, and when Ashe flipped Dimensional Prison, Pleines Chained Book of Moon to turn his Acid Golem face-down.

Ashe drew and Set Gravekeeper’s Commandant.

Pleines Set a Spell or Trap, and Pleines blasted it in the End Phase: Foolish Burial, a bluff.

Ashe Flip Summoned Gravekeeper’s Commandant.  Pleines activated Bottomless Trap Hole, and Ashe Chained Torrential Tribute: he destroyed his Commandant and his Recruiter, plus Pleines’ Number 30: Acid Golem of Destruction and TWO Set Card Troopers!  Pleines drew two cards with the Troopers, while Ashe searched his Deck for another Recruiter.  Ashe tried to Summon it, but Pleines negated the attempt with Solemn Warning.

GiantTorrential

Pleines Set another Spell or Trap, then Summoned Inzektor Centipede, attacking into Mirror Force.

Ashe Normal Summoned Gravekeeper’s Spy and attacked to destroy Pleines’ Set Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter.  Skill Drain kept it from using its effect, and a turn later Pleines was conceding the Match!

Robert Pleines puts forth a vailant effort in his toughest match-up, but it isn’t quite enough to make for an upset!  Justin Ashe moves on with a 6-1 record!
