We Feature Matched Justin Ashe earlier in the tournament, and now he’s brought Gravekeepers all the way to the Top 16!  His opponent this round is playing another deck that was also a darkhorse pick coming into this weekend – Thomas Chacko is running Agents here in the final rounds of YCS Rhode Island!  This one was anybody’s Match to win, and the victor here would be headed to the Top 8!

 

Ashe opened the Match with a hand of Gravekeeper’s Recruiter; Gravekeeper’s Descendant; Effect Veiler; Book of Moon; Compulsory Evacuation Device; and Bottomless Trap Hole.  He Set recruiter and Bottomless.

 

Chacko Summoned The Agent of Creation – Venus and paid 500 Life Points to Special Summon a Mystical Shine Ball from his Deck.  When he paid an additional 500 to activate The Agent of Creation’s effect again, Ashe negated the effect with Effect Veiler, leaving Chacko to Set one Spell or Trap.

 

 

Ashe drew another Recruiter.  He Summoned Descendant, then tried to Flip Summon his Recruiter: Chacko stopped him with Solemn Warning.  Ashe attacked Mystical Shine Ball with Descendant and ended.

 

Chacko paid 500 Life Points once again to Special Summon a Shine Ball, then paid another 500 to Summon a third – that one from his hand.  He overlaid his Shine Balls to Xyz Summon Gachi Gachi Gantetsu, then Normal Summoned The Agent of Mystery – Earth, adding another Agent of Creation to his hand.  Venus attacked over Gravekeeper’s Descendant to destroy it, and The Agent of Mystery – Earth made a direct attack.  In Main Phase 2 Chacko Tuned the Agents together for Magical Android, and Ashe banished it with Bottomless Trap Hole.

 

Ashe drew Necrovalley and activated it, then Set Gravekeeper’s Recruiter and Compulsory Evacuation Device. 

 

Chacko Set a monster and a Spell or Trap.

 

Ashe drew Torrential Tribute, a potentially powerful combo with his Recruiter.  He Set it.

 

Chacko Flip Summoned The Agent of Creation – Venus, then Normal Summoned another: Ashe responded with Torrential Tribute, destroying everything but Gachi Gachi and getting Gravekeeper’s Assailant from his Deck.  He Set a second Spell or Trap.

 

Ashe drew Cardcar D.  He Set Book of Moon, then Normal Summoned Cardcar D to Tribute it and draw Gravekeeper’s Spy and Royal Tribute!

 

Chacko drew to three cards in hand with Gachi Gachi and two face-down Spell or Traps on the field.  He Summoned Honest and turned Gachi Gachi to Attack Position, attacking with both to drop Ashe to 4100 Life Points.  He returned Honest to his hand.

 

Ashe drew another Cardcar D!  He Set Gravekeeper’s Spy.

 

Chacko Set another monster, and another Spell or Trap.

 

Ashe drew Gravekeeper’s Descendant and Flip Summoned Gravekeeper’s Spy: Chacko discarded Archlord Kristya for Herald of Orange Light, destroying the Spy and negating its effect!  Ashe had two cards Set in his Spell and Trap Card Zone, and four cards in hand: Royal Tribute; Descendant; Assailant; and Cardcar D.  He Summoned the latter, Tributing it to draw Bottomless Trap Hole and Dimensional Prison.

 

Chacko turned Gachi Gachi to Defense Position, then Summoned a Cardcar D of his own!  He Tributed it to draw two.

 

 

Ashe drew Gravekeeper’s Commandant and Summoned Assailant, attacking Gachi Gachi.  Chacko tried to banish Assailant with Dimensional Prison, but Ashe kept it on the field with Book of Moon.  In Main Phase 2 he tossed Commandant to the Graveyard to search another Necrovalley.  He Set a Spell or Trap.

 

Chacko Normal Summoned Thunder King Rai-Oh and attacked Assailant, destroying it thanks to Gachi Gachi’s ATK boost. 

 

Ashe Set Commandant, then activated Royal Tribute to make Chacko discard his Master Hyperion, Honest, and Herald of Orange Light!  Ashe lost nothing himself.

 

Chacko attacked with Thunder King again, but this time Ashe banished it with Dimensional Prison.  Pot of Duality in Main Phase 2 revealed Monster Reborn, Mystical Space Typhoon, and Cardcar D from the top of Chacko’s deck: he took Mystical Space Typhoon.  He Set a Spell or Trap.

 

Ashe drew Solemn Judgment and Set it.

 

 

Chacko tried to Summon Cardcar D – the fourth one in this Duel thus far – but lost out to Ashe’s Solemn Warning.

 

Ashe drew his third Necrovalley and Flip Summoned Gravekeeper’s Descendant.  He activated Compulsory to boot Gachi Gachi Gantetsu back to the Extra Deck, and made a direct attack with Descendant to knock Chacko down to 2500 Life Points.

 

Chacko Set a fourth Spell or Trap.

 

Ashe attacked again, and Chacko had to Compulsory the Descendant back to Ashe’s hand.  He Summoned it again in Main Phase 2, but Chacko responded with Torrential Tribute to destroy it.  Ashe Set a Spell or Trap.

 

Chacko Set a third Spell or Trap.

 

Ashe passed.

 

Chacko passed.

 

Ashe drew and activated Pot of Duality, revealing Mirror Force, Torrential Tribute, and Gravekeeper’s Stele.  He added the Stele to his hand.

 

 

He activated Gravekeeper’s Stele to target his Spy and Descendant: Chacko responded with Solemn Judgment, but when Ashe had a Judgment of his own to Chain, Chacko conceded the Duel!

 

Justine Ashe grinds out a long win in the first Duel, now just one win away from the Top 8!  I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many copies of Cardcar D played in a single YCS Featured Duel!

 

The second Duel saw Chacko start things off with Pot of Duality, revealing Master Hyperion, Mystical Shine Ball, and The Agent of Mystery – Earth.  He took The Agent of Mystery to his hand, and Summoned it to get The Agent of Creation – Venus.  He Set two cards to his Spell and Trap Card Zone.

 

Ashe had two Pot of Duality; Thunder King Rai-Oh; Gravekeeper’s Commandant; Torrential Tribute; and Dimensional Prison.  He pitched Gravekeeper’s Commandant, but Chacko negated its effect with Herald of Orange Light!  That might be a costly maneuver in the long run.  Ashe revealed two Mirror Forces plus Gravekeeper’s Spy with Duality, taking the Spy, and Set it, then Set Prison and Bottomless.

 

Chacko Summoned Doomcaliber Knight, and attacked into Dimensional Prison.  Chacko Chained Compulsory Evacuation Device to bounce his own Doomcaliber back to his hand.  Chacko turned The Agent of Mystery – Earth to Defense Position.

 

Ashe drew Solemn Warning and Flip Summoned Gravekeeper’s Spy to Special Summon Gravekeeper’s Recruiter.  Recruiter attacked to destroy The Agent of Mystery, while Spy made a direct attack.  Ashe Set Warning.

 

Chacko Summoned The Agent of Creation and Ashe flipped Bottomless Trap Hole: once again, Chacko activated Compulsory Evacuation Device to save his monster.

 

Ashe drew Mystical Space Typhoon and activated Pot of Duality, revealing Bottomless Trap Hole; Gravekeeper’s Descendant; and Royal Tribute.  He took the Descendant.  He Summoned Descendant, and attacked with all three of his monsters to knock Chacko down to 2900 Life Points.  Ashe Set a second Spell or Trap.

 

Chacko Summoned The Agent of Creation – Venus again, and this time Ashe didn’t have a response.  He paid himself down to 2400 Life Points for a Mystical Shine Ball, then paid another 500: Ashe Chained Solemn Warning, destroying The Agent of Creation and leaving Chacko with a single Mystical Shine Ball stranded on the field!  Chacko ended his turn with four cards in hand.

 

 

Ashe drew another Thunder King Rai-Oh.  He Tributed Recruiter for Descendant’s ability, destroying Mystical Shine Ball and getting Gravekeeper’s Commandant to his hand with Recruiter!  He chucked the Commandant for Necrovalley, activated it, and then attacked for game in one shot to evade a possible Gorz!

 

Justin Ashe is taking Gravekeepers to the Top 8!
