Round 10 Feature Match: Jonathan Gonzalez versus Cody Muniz
Jonathan Gonzalez made the trip here this weekend from San Diego, CA. He’s playing a Machine Deck packing Geargia, Machina, and Karakuri. His opponent is Cody Muniz from Rock Springs, CO, who got this far with Wind-Ups. We’re entering the final round of Swiss play, then we’re off to the Top 32!
Gonzalez started this final Swiss round with Geargiarsenal, Tributing it to get Geargiarmor. He turned it face-down and Set a back row.
Muniz’s opening hand consisted of Dark Hole, Messenger of Peace, Wind-Up Rat, Tour Guide From the Underworld, Solemn Warning, and Wind-Up Magician. He played Dark Hole, then lost his Tour Guide to Solemn Warning. He Set his own Warning.
Gonzalez played Pot of Duality. It revealed Geargiaccelerator, Monster Reborn, and Karakuri Watchdog mdl 313 “Saizan”. He thought a moment before adding Monster Reborn to his hand. He Set a back row, unable to play Reborn after Duality.
Muniz drew another Warning. He Set it.
Gonzalez flipped over his face-down Heavy Storm! It blasted both of Muniz’s Warnings, then he was free to play Monster Reborn on his Geargiarsenal. He Tributed it to get Geargiaccelerator from his Deck, then Normal Summoned Geargiarmor. He bounced his Geargiaccelerator for Genex Ally Birdman, then Special Summoned Geargiaccelerator again. He turned Geargiarmor face-down, then tuned Birdman to Geargiaccelerator for Karakuri Shogun mdl 00 “Burei”. Its effect brought Karakuri Strategist mdl 248 “Nishipachi” to the field, which turned Geargiarmor face-up. That added Geargiaccelerator to Gonzalez’s hand. He Special Summoned it and used it and Nishipachi for another Burei. Burei’s effect brought Saizan to the field, and he tuned Saizan to Geargiarmor to Synchro Summon Karakuri Steel Shogun mdl 00X “Bureido”! Bureido Special Summoned another Saizan, and Gonzalez entered his Battle Phase. His four monsters attacked, backed up by a Limiter Removal to end this Duel right here!
Jonathan Gonzalez takes a swift first Duel thanks to the Synchro Summon power of Karakuri and Geargia!
“I don’t even know what you’re playing…” remarked Gonzalez. He had only seen Tour Guide and Solemn Warning, which meant Muniz could be playing any number of strategies. That should give Muniz an edge while Side Decking for the next Duel.
Duel 2
Muniz started off with Heavy Storm, Wind-Up Shark, 2 Wind-Up Rabbits, Torrential Tribute, and Dimensional Prison. He Normal Summoned a Rabbit and Set Torrential Tribute.
Gonzalez destroyed Torrential with Mystical Space Typhoon, then Normal Summoned Machina Gearframe. He added Machina Fortress to his hand. He discarded 2 Fortresses to Special Summon one of them, then entered his Battle Phase. Muniz banished his Rabbit to save it, so Gearframe and Fortress attacked directly. Gonzalez equipped Gearframe to Fortress in Main Phase 2, then Set a back row.
Muniz drew Sangan. He returned Rabbit to the field, then destroyed Solemn Judgment and Gearframe with Heavy Storm. He Normal Summoned his other Rabbit and stacked them for Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity, but its effect got negated by Gonzalez’s Effect Veiler! Muniz Set Prison.
Gonzalez lost his Fortress to Prison next turn, and Set a back row.
Muniz drew Mystical Space Typhoon. Gonzalez played Compulsory Evacuation Device in the Draw Phase to get rid of Zenmaity, so Muniz Set Sangan and Mystical Space Typhoon.
Gonzalez revived Machina Fortress with Monster Reborn and destroyed Sangan. It added Wind-Up Magician to his hand.
Muniz drew Torrential Tribute. He Normal Summoned Magician, then Special Summoned Shark. Magician brought out another Magician, then Shark became Level 5. That triggered the new Magician to bring out another Shark, which also became Level 5. He used his four monsters to Xyz Summon Maestroke the Symphony Djinn and Tiras, Keeper of Genesis! Tiras took out Fortress, which destroyed Mystical Space Typhoon. Maestroke attacked directly and Gonzalez activated Gorz the Emissary of Darkness. He Special Summoned an 1800 ATK/DEF Emissary of Darkness Token, and Tiras destroyed Gorz at the end of the Battle Phase.
Gonzalez drew, now with only an Emissary of Darkness Token and one card in his hand. He played it, Geargiarsenal, and Muniz used Torrential Tribute to destroy Gonzalez’s monsters. Muniz’s Maestroke and Tiras both survived with their effects!
Muniz drew Solemn Judgment. He attacked directly with both of his Xyz Monsters and Set Judgment. When Gonzalez drew his last card, he knew he wouldn’t be able to last another turn and conceded!
Cody Muniz evens the score, and we’re going to a third Duel!
Duel 3
Gonzalez Normal Summoned Geargiarsenal to start the last Duel, and Tributed it to get Geargiarmor from his Deck. He turned it face-down and Set two back row cards.
Muniz had Monster Reborn, Trap Stun, Dimensional Prison, Bottomless Trap Hole, Wind-Up Rat, and Wind-Up Magician. He Set his Trap Cards.
Gonzalez Flip Summoned Geargiarmor and put Geargiaccelerator into his hand. He played Pot of Duality next, choosing between Fortress, Solemn Warning, and Geargiaccelerator. He took the Warning. Geargiarmor attacked directly and was banished by Dimensional Prison, then Gonzalez Set a monster and a back row.
Muniz drew Mystical Space Typhoon. He played it to destroy the newly Set card which he knew to be Warning, then he Normal Summoned Magician. He activated Reborn on Geargiarsenal, and Gonzalez Chained Gozen Match! Muniz Chained Trap Stun, but Gonzalez Chained Compulsory Evacuation Device to return Magician! Muniz revived Geargiarsenal and passed.
Gonzalez activated Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Bottomless Trap Hole, then pitched Fortress and Machina Cannon to Special Summon the Fortress. It destroyed Geargiarsenal.
Muniz drew Wind-Up Factory. He Set Magician and passed.
Fortress destroyed Magician on Gonzalez’s turn.
Muniz drew Wind-Up Shark. “That Gozen Match is going to win you the game…” “I didn’t Side it Game 2 because I didn’t know what you were running!”
Muniz Normal Summoned Shark and played Factory. He made Shark Level 5, and Factory put Wind-Up Rabbit in his hand.
Gonzalez Flip Summoned Geargiaccelerator and attacked Shark so its effect could activate, adding Geargiarsenal to Gonzalez’s hand, then Fortress destroyed Shark. In Main Phase 2 he Normal Summoned Geargiarsenal and got Geargiarmor, turned it face-down, and Set a back row.
Muniz drew Solemn Warning. He Normal Summoned Rabbit and Set Warning.
Gonzalez destroyed Warning next turn with Mystical Space Typhoon, then Flip Summoned Geargiarmor to add Geargiaccelerator to his hand. He Special Summoned it and Xyz Summoned Gear Gigant X, adding Machina Gearframe to his hand. He Normal Summoned that, adding Fortress to his hand. He discarded Fortress and Genex Ally Birdman to Special Summon the Fortress, and then finally activated Pot of Avarice! He returned all his monsters from his Graveyard to the Deck to draw two cards. Fortress attacked Rabbit, destroying it in battle. Gear Gigant X, Gearframe, and the other Fortress attacked directly to finish the Match!
Jonathan Gonzalez is victorious with Geargia!
