Round 4 Feature Match: Jonathan Weigle Versus Harold Rillo
Jonathan Weigle and Harold Rillo are long-term friends and former teammates. Both Duelists are from right here in Seattle, and in a previous YCS Seattle years ago, they faced off in Round 4 just like they’re doing today. Last time it was Rillo that claimed victory, but Weigle was looking for some friendly revenge. The Decks have changed, but the Duelists – and the Round number – are the same. Eerie. Weigle is playing Wind-Ups, while Rillo is running Chaos Dragons.
Rillo opened with Charge of the Light Brigade, sending Gorz the Emissary of Darkness, Dark Hole, and Tragoedia to the Graveyard to get Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress from his Deck. He discarded her for Solar Recharge, drawing two cards and sending Tour Guide from the Underworld and Effect Veiler to the Graveyard off the top of his Deck. He Set a monster.
Weigle had a hand of Dark Hole; Mystical Space Typhoon; Wind-Up Factory; Wind-Up Shark; Messenger of Peace; and Wind-Up Rat. That Messenger of Peace could be a huge factor in this first Duel. He activated Dark Hole to destroy Rillo’s Set Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter, then Normal Summoned Wind-Up Rat to Special Summon Wind-Up Shark. He activated Factory; reduced Shark to Level 3; and used the Factory to get another Shark from his Deck. He Xyz Summoned Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity and Special Summoned Wind-Up Magician, Special Summoning his second Shark from his hand. His first Magician let him Special Summon a second, and he overlaid the first with Wind-Up Shark to Xyz Summon Wind-Up Zenmaister. He turned Carrier Zenmaity face-down, and when he Xyz Summoned Photon Papilloperative Rillo knew it was all over. Weigle used Papilloperative to flip Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity face-up; used its effect again; and finished with a field of Papilloperative, Zenmaity, Zenmaister, and Number 20: Giga-Brilliant boosting the ATK of all four monsters!
Jonathan Weigle abuses Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity twice in one turn thanks to Photon Papilloperative, scoring a first turn KO against the defenseless Harold Rillo!
“Well… That’s not exactly how I wanted to lose in a Feature Match,” laughed Rillo, going for his Side Deck. The pressure was on.
Rillo opened with Solar Recharge, discarding Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter to draw two cards and send Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon and Thunder King Rai-Oh to the Graveyard. He Set three cards to his back row.
Weigle had Wind-Up Rat; Monster Reborn; Macro Cosmos; Messenger of Peace; Torrential Tribute; and Bottomless Trap Hole. He Set Bottomless and Macro, but lost his Macro to Rillo’s Mystical Space Typhoon in the End Phase.
Rillo Normal Summoned Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress, and Weigle tried to banish her with Bottomless Trap Hole: Rillo Chained Royal Decree, negating Bottomless. Lyla attacked for 1700 Battle Damage, then sent Lightpulsar Dragon, Soul Taker, and Tour Guide from the Underworld to the Graveyard in the End Phase.
Weigle drew and activated Level Limit – Area B, turning Lyla to Defense Position. He Set Torrential Tribute, then Summoned Wind-Up Rat. He activated Reborn to target his opponent’s Tour Guide, and Rillo Chained Maxx “C” to draw a card. Weigle attacked to destroy Lyla, then made a direct attack with Tour Guide.
Charge of the Light Brigade let Rillo send Heavy Storm, Night Assailant, and Darkflare Dragon to his Graveyard, getting him Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter. He activated Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Weigle’s Set Torrential Tribute, then cleared the field with Dark Hole! He Set a second Spell or Trap, then Set Ryko, his last in-hand card.
Weigle drew Mystical Space Typhoon, holding Messenger of Peace. He Set Typhoon.
Rillo passed.
Weigle drew Thunder King Rai-Oh. He thought a moment, then passed.
Rillo banished Tour Guide and Ryko to Special Summon Lightpulsar Dragon from his hand, then went to attack, but was reminded of Level Limit.
Weigle drew Solemn Judgment. He activated Messenger of Peace and Set Judgment, then Summoned Thunder King Rai-Oh and shifted it to Defense Position with Level Limit.
Rillo Flip Summoned Ryko, destroying Level Limit by sending Royal Decree, Pot of Avarice, and another Lightpulsar to the Graveyard. He flipped his Set Mystical Space Typhoon targeting Messenger of Peace, destroying it, and then attacked with Lightpulsar to destroy Thunder King.
Weigle drew Wind-Up Shark and passed.
Rillo banished Night Assailant and Lyla to Special Summon Chaos Sorcerer, then Normal Summoned Eclipse Wyvern to command enough damage to threaten game! Weigle conceded!
Harold Rillo fights back after a hideous first Duel to win Game 2, slowly Special Summoning monsters and fighting through Level Limit – Area B and Messenger of Peace. Royal Decree was clutch, and Weigle would have to wrap his head around how he’d beat it for Game 3.
Weigle started the last Duel, holding two Wind-Up Factory; two Wind-Up Rat; Tour Guide from the Underworld; and Wind-Up Shark! He Summoned Tour Guide to Special Summon another, and overlaid them for Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity.
He activated both copies of Factory and activated Zenmaity’s effect to Special Summon Wind-Up Magician. He Special Summoned Wind-Up Shark to trigger the Magician’s effect, getting Wind-Up Rat and Wind-Up Rabbit with his Factories. The first Magician Summoned another, and that Magician Summoned another Wind-Up Shark when the effect of the first changed it to Level 3. Weigle overlaid his two Magicians and his Level 4 Shark for Number 16: Shock Master and detached for its ability, keeping Rillo from playing Spells next turn.
Rillo Summoned Thunder King Rai-Oh to attack over Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity.
Weigle drew another Wind-Up Shark next turn. He took a moment to think through his options, and decided to Normal Summon Wind-Up Rat. He tried to use its effect, but Rillo negated it with Effect Veiler, leaving Weigle to reduce Shark to Level 3 and overlay it with Rat for Wind-Up Zenmaines: Rillo negated the Summon by sending his Thunder King to the Graveyard. Weigle activated Shock Master’s effect calling Spells, and ended.
Rillo Normal Summoned Tour Guide from the Underworld to Special Summon another, and Xyz Summoned Temtempo the Percussion Djinn. He stripped Shock Master’s last Xyz Material with Temtempo’s ability, then banished to Special Summon Lightpulsar Dragon. Lightpulsar attacked over Shock Master to destroy it, and Temtempo dropped Weigle to 5600 Life Points.
Weigle Normal Summoned another Wind-Up Rat and used it to Special Summon Wind-Up Magician. He revealed and Special Summoned Wind-Up Shark, Special Summoning a Wind-Up Rabbit with the Magician’s effect. He labored over his decisions: “What do you have in your hand, Harold?”
Rillo grinned, unhelpful: “Yu-Gi-Oh! cards!”
Weigle banished Wind-Up Magician with Rabbit, then Special Summoned Wind-Up Shark with Monster Reborn. He overlaid the two Sharks for Tiras, Keeper of Genesis, then stacked Rabbit and Rat for Number 20: Giga-Brilliant. He pumped Brilliant and Tiras with Brilliant’s effect, then attacked over Lightpulsar with Tiras, and destroyed Temtempo with Tiras’ effect in Main Phase 2. Rillo chained Temtempo’s effect to strip Tiras of its last Xyz Material.
Rillo Set a monster.
Weigle drew Dimensional Fissure and brought his Wind-Up Magician back to the field.
Weigle Normal Summoned another Rabbit, then activated Dimensional Fissure. He turned Magician to Attack Position and detached Brilliant’s last Material, boosting the ATK of his four monsters. Tiras attacked Rillo’s Set Ryko, and Ryko destroyed Tiras, sending Lyla, Maxx “C”, and Soul Taker to the Graveyard. Rabbit attacked for 1700 Battle Damage and Rillo Special Summoned Gorz the Emissary of Darkness and a 1700 ATK Emissary of Darkness Token. Brilliant attacked the Token, destroying it, and – still in the Battle Phase – Weigle banished Wind-Up Rabbit to trigger Magician’s effect. He Special Summoned another Rabbit in Defense Position.
The Duel stood at 5600 Life Points to 5900, with Rillo narrowly leading. He shifted Gorz to Attack Position and attacked Wind-Up Magician, banishing it due to Fissure. Rillo Set a Spell or Trap and Set a monster.
Weigle Summoned Wind-Up Rat and Special Summoned back a Rabbit.
He overlaid two Rabbits for Number 17: Leviathan Dragon, and overlaid the third Rabbit with Rat for Number 30: Acid Golem of Destruction! Acid Golem attacked over Gorz; Brilliant attacked Rillo’s face-down Ryko; and Ryko destroyed Number 17: Leviathan Dragon so it couldn’t attack.
Rillo drew to two cards in hand with one card Set. He Set a monster, then Set his last card to his back row.
Weigle detached a Material from Acid Golem, then Normal Summoned Thunder King Rai-Oh, attacking into Rillo’s Set Honest! Direct attacks dropped Rillo to 2600 Life Points, and next turn he couldn’t rip his only out: Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning. Rillo offered the handshake!
Over five years ago, Harold Rillo beat Jonathan Weigle in Round 4 of YCS Seattle! This time, Weigle evens the score and moves on with a 4-0 record!
