Saturday Dragon Duel Final: Marion Smith IV versus Joon Chong

November 17th, 2012

12-year-old Marion Smith is from here from Joint Base Lewis-McChord, here in WA. He’s playing 11-year-old Joon Chong, who we just saw claim a win in the last round. Both Duelists are friends and practically neighbors, and both were excited to see each other in the last round!

Joon began with Miracle Fusion, Mystical Space Typhoon, Starlight Road, Dark Bribe, and 2 Dimensional Prisons. He Set everything but Miracle Fusion.

Marion Set a monster.

Joon drew E – Emergency Call. With all of his Spell and Trap Card Zones full, he couldn’t play it yet.

Marion passed.

Joon drew The Warrior Returning Alive. He passed.

Marion Set three, losing Bottomless Trap Hole to Joon’s Mystical Space Typhoon.

Joon drew Call of the Haunted. He played E – Emergency Call to get Elemental HERO Stratos, then Summoned it to add Elemental HERO Neos Alius to his hand. Stratos destroyed Marion’s Mystic Tomato, which Special Summoned Inzektor Dragonfly. Joon Set Call of the Haunted.

Marion equipped Dragonfly with Inzektor Giga-Mantis from his hand, but attacked into Dimensional Prison!

Joon drew another Neos Alius. He Summoned one, then stacked it with Stratos for Blade Armor Ninja. Marion played Solemn Warning, but Joon negated it with Dark Bribe. He detached Stratos for Blade Armor Ninja’s effect, then revived Stratos with Call of the Haunted! Stratos added Elemental HERO Bubbleman to his hand. Stratos attacked, and Marion played Call of the Haunted to revive Mystic Tomato. Stratos destroyed it, and it Special Summoned Inzektor Hornet. Blade Armor Ninja destroyed that, then attacked again directly. Marion only had 1700 Life Points remaining.

Marion tried to save himself with Dark Hole, but Joon used his Starlight Road! It Special Summoned Stardust Dragon from his Extra Deck. Marion continued with Tour Guide From the Underworld, Special Summoning another one from his Deck. He stacked the Guides to Xyz Summon Leviair the Sea Dragon. Leviair brought Dragonfly back to the field. It equipped Hornet, then Marion sent Hornet to the Graveyard. Stardust Dragon negated Hornet, but Dragonfly still Special Summoned Inzektor Centipede from his Deck. Centipede equipped Hornet, and Hornet destroyed Call of the Haunted, taking Stratos down too. Centipede’s effect gave Marion another Centipede in his hand. He stacked Dragonfly and Centipede for Wind-Up Zenmaines. Zenmaines attacked Blade Armor Ninja, but was banished by Dimensional Prison! Marion Set two back row.

Joon drew Compulsory Evacuation Device. He Normal Summoned Neos Alius, then Set all his Spells and Traps so he could Special Summon Bubbleman. He stacked his HEROes for Heroic Champion – Excalibur, detaching both materials. He used Blade Armor Ninja’s effect, then finished off the rest of Marion’s Life Points!

Joon Chong pushes fearlessly into Marion Smith’s back row! Marion revealed the cards to be Pot of Duality and Inzektor Sword – Zektkaliber, two bluffs!

Marion began siding, and sided out fifteen cards! He had a special strategy that had won him every game so far. Luckily for Joon, he was a friend of Marion’s and already knew how this strategy worked! This should be interesting.

Duel 2

Marion began with… Wind-Up Factory?! He’d changed his Deck from Inzektors into Wind-Ups with his Side Deck! “I knew he was going to do that, so I didn’t Side in my Shadow-Imprisoning Mirrors,” Joon said. Because Joon knew how this strategy worked, he didn’t fall for its tricks, but any other Duelist might have made that mistake!

Marion continued his turn, by playing Foolish Burial, putting Wind-Up Shark in the Graveyard. He Normal Summoned Wind-Up Rat, using it to bring Shark to the field. Factory put Shark in his hand. He turned Shark to Level 3, then stacked them for Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity. It detached Shark to bring a Rat to the field, and he Special Summoned Shark from his hand. Rat revived Shark, then he made the new Shark Level 3. He stacked Shark and Rat for Wind-Up Zenmaines. He Set a back row and passed.

Joon began with Snowman Eater, Starlight Road, Pot of Duality, Neos Alius, E – Emergency Call, and A Hero Lives. He played Pot of Duality, revealing Effect Veiler, E – Emergency Call, and Compulsory Evacuation Device. He took the Evacuation Device. He Normal Summoned Neos Alius, but lost it to Solemn Warning. He Set Road and Evacuation Device.

Marion drew, and Joon played Compulsory Evacuation Device on Zenmaity. Marion simply Normal Summoned Wind-Up Magician! He turned Shark into a Level 3 monster, triggering Factory and Magician. He put Shark in his hand and Wind-Up Rabbit on the field. He stacked Shark and Rabbit for Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity, then Special Summoned Shark from his hand. He used Zenmaity’s effect to bring Magician to the field, then stacked Shark and 2 Magicians for Number 16: Shock Master! He used Shock Master’s effect to lock Joon out of Spells, then Set a back row.

Joon drew Stratos. He Normal Summoned it and it fell into a Bottomless Trap Hole. Stratos’s effect still added Neos Alius to Joon’s hand.

Marion played a Rat. It revived Shark, and Factory put Rabbit in his hand. Shark became Level 3, then it and Rat were used to Xyz Summon Number 30: Acid Golem! Shock Master shut down Traps, and all of Marion’s monsters wiped Joon out!

Marion makes a comeback with Wind-Ups! He moved to his Side Deck again – is he switching back to Inzektors, or is it a bluff?

It was a challenge to get a picture of Joon where he wasn't making a weird face

Duel 3

Joon began the final Duel with 2 Bubblemen, 2 Mirror Forces, A Hero Lives, and Effect Veiler. He Set a Bubbleman and a Mirror Force.

Marion Normal Summoned Inzektor Centipede, and Joon negated its effect with Effect Veiler. He Set 2 back row.

Joon drew another Effect Veiler. He Normal Summoned Bubbleman, then Flip Summoned the other. He stacked both for Blade Armor Ninja, and it was banished by Bottomless Trap Hole.

Marion activated Centipede again, and Joon negated it again with Veiler. He Normal Summoned another Centipede though, and it equipped Hornet from his hand! Hornet destroyed Mirror Force, and Centipede put Dragonfly in his hand. Both Centipedes attacked directly. In Main Phase 2, he Xyz Summoned Wind-Up Zenmaines in defense position.

Joon drew another A Hero Lives. He played one, paying 2400 Life Points to get Stratos from his Deck. That put Neos Alius in his hand, and he Normal Summoned it. He stacked both HEROes for Number 39: Utopia, then Set Mirror Force.

Marion played Dragonfly, equipping Hornet to it. Hornet destroyed Mirror Force, then Dragonfly got Centipede from the Deck. Centipede equipped Hornet, which destroyed Utopia. Marion sent his three monsters to finish Joon off!
