Round 4 Feature Match: Matt Kolenda vs. Robert Boyajian

March 23rd, 2013

Robert Boyajian is one of the most well-known players in YCS competition. He won YCS Gencon in 2011, becoming the very first player to own a Blood Mefist! He’s brought a Fusion Gate HERO Deck today. Normally, it wins with its awesome HERO Fusions, but it also packs the ability to instantly win in one turn with burn damage! His opponent this round is Matt Kolenda, packing Fire Fists with a Set of Sabersauruses to use with Rescue Rabbit.

Duel 1

Boyajian had a hand of Fiendish Chain, Fusion Gate, Chain Material, Terraforming, Elemental HERO Neos Alius, and Pot of Duality. He played the Pot, revealing another Pot, another Terraforming, and another Neos Alius! He chose Duality. He played Neos Alius, Set Fiendish Chain and Chain Material.

Kolenda played Sabersaurus and attacked Neos Alius, destroying both monsters. He Set 2 back row cards.

Matt Kolenda

Boyajian drew Solemn Warning. He activated Fusion Gate, and lost it to Mystical Space Typhoon. He played Terraforming and got another Fusion Gate, then played Chain Material! With Fusion Gate and Chain Material, he was able to banish Elemental HERO Bubbleman, Elemental HERO Clayman, Elemental HERO Burstinatrix, and Elemental HERO Avian directly from his Deck, and Fusion Summon Elemental HERO Electrum! It returned all the banished monsters to the Deck. Since Chain Material lasts the whole turn, he used the same trick for another Electrum! The materials returned once again, and Boyajian Xyz Summoned Superdreadnought Rail Cannon Gustav Max! Its effect dealt 2000 damage, and Boyajian banished Electrum and Gustav Max to Fusion Summon Elemental HERO Gaia, then Fusion Summoned Elemental HERO The Shining with Electrum and Gaia. He Summoned another Electrum, and returned all the banished HEROes to the Deck and Extra Deck. He played another Electrum, made Gustav Max, and dealt 2000 damage. He made Gaia, then The Shining. He made 2 Electrums next, and stacked them for Gustav Max and another 2000 damage. He made Gaia once more, then The Shining, and then Electrum once more. One more Electrum, then Gustav Max, and it dealt the last 2000 damage to finish the Duel!

Robert Boyajian is able to finish the first Duel without a single attack, dealing 8000 damage by reusing Gustav Max! That was ridiculous! Can Kolenda fight back and win two games in a row?

Duel 2

Kolenda Normal Summoned Rescue Rabbit! He banished it for 2 Sabersauruses, then Xyz Summoned Evolzar Laggia. He Set five cards to his back row! That should give Boyajian some trouble setting up any combos this time.

THE TERROR

Boyajian began with 2 Neos Alius, Dark Bribe, Fiendish Chain, Chain Material, and Mirror Force. He Set all of his traps.

Kolenda attacked with Laggia.

Boyajian drew Pot of Duality, choosing Snowman Eater instead of Bottomless Trap Hole or Torrential Tribute. He Set it and passed.

Kolenda passed, knowing Snowman Eater would destroy Laggia if he attacked.

Boyajian drew Dark Hole and passed.

Kolenda passed.

Boyajian drew Mirror Force. He passed.

Kolenda played Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Chain Material. Next, he played Rescue Rabbit! He used it for 2 Gene-Warped Warwolves and stacked them for Brotherhood of the Fire Fist – Tiger King. Tiger King Set Tenki on the field, and he activated it to add Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Bear to his hand. He played Fire Formation – Tensu next, and used his extra Normal Summon for Bear. Bear pitched Tenki to wipe Snowman Eater off the board, and Kolenda sent all his monsters to attack. Boyajian used Mirror Force, Kolenda used Laggia, Boyajian used Fiendish Chain, Kolenda used Solemn Judgment, and Boyajian used Dark Bribe! After it all resolved, Kolenda lost all his monsters!

Boyajian drew Torrential Tribute. He played Neos Alius and lost it to Solemn Warning. He Set Torrential Tribute.

Kolenda Set a back row card.

Boyajian drew Terraforming. Neos Alius attacked and fell to Mirror Force.

Kolenda Normal Summoned Tour Guide From the Underworld! It Special Summoned another Tour Guide, and he Xyz Summoned Number 17: Leviathan Dragon. He used its effect and attacked, dropping Boyajian to 3100 Life Points while Kolenda had 2000.

Boyajian drew Clayman. He played Dark Hole, and Kolenda saved Leviathan Dragon with Forbidden Lance. Boyajian played Terraforming next, adding Fusion Gate to his hand.

Kolenda played Tenki to add Brotherhood of the Fire Fist – Gorilla to his hand, then played it. Boyajian negated it with Solemn Judgment. When Kolenda attacked for the win, Boyajian used Mirror Force, and Kolenda saved Leviathan with Book of Moon!

Boyajian drew Chain Material. He Set it along with Clayman.

Robert Boyajian

Kolenda attacked with Leviathan without using its effect, and it was unable to destroy Clayman in battle! He Set a third face-down to his back row.

Boyajian drew E – Emergency Call. He played it for Elemental HERO Stratos, which destroyed Dimensional Prison with its effect. He played Fusion Gate next, and followed that with Chain Material. He banished Clayman, Bubbleman, Burstinatrix, and Avian to Fusion Summon Electrum, and it returned all banished cards to the owners’ Decks. He banished the materials from his Deck once more for another Electrum, returning the materials again. He stacked the Electrums for Gustav Max, and Kolenda banished it with Bottomless Trap Hole! Boyajian banished his Electrums for The Shining, then Fusion Summoned another Electrum to return all banished cards. A second Electrum hit the field, and he stacked them for Gustav Max once more, and it dealt the last 2000 damage to finish the Match!

Robert Boyajian is victorious with his incredible HERO Deck!
