Round 5 Constructed Feature Match: Kento Toshikawa Versus Antonio Gonzalez
Kento Toshikawa traveled here this weekend from Osaka, Japan to compete in the main event, and headed into Round 5 he’s undefeated with Prophecy! Toshikawa has some tricks up his sleeve that we haven’t really seen before in a North American Feature Match, so this could be interesting. His opponent is Antonio Gonzalez, a Dino Rabbit Duelist from Los Angeles. Macro Cosmos might give Gonzalez an edge here, keeping Toshikawa’s Spellbooks out of the Graveyard. But both of these Duelists are guaranteed their spots in the Top 32, so this one’s all about personal pride and respect.
Toshikawa opened the Round with Effect Veiler; Spellbook of Wisdom; Spellbook of Fate; two Spellbook Magician of Prophecy; and Madolche Magileine.
He Summoned Spellbook Magician of Prophecy, searching his Deck for Spellbook of Secrets. That got him Spellbook of the Master, and he revealed Spellbook of Wisdom to copy Spellbook of Secrets. Master let him search out Spellbook of Eternity. He Set Fate.
Gonzalez activated Mystical Space Typhoon, and Toshikawa Chained Spellbook of Fate to banish two Spellbooks and turn his Magician face-down, setting himself up to reuse its effect. Gonzalez Summoned Jurrac Guaiba, and Toshikawa blasted it with Effect Veiler. Gonzalez attacked anyways, destroying Spellbook Magician of Prophecy, and Toshikawa got Spellbook of Power. Gonzalez Set one card to his back row.
Toshikawa drew Maxx “C”. He Summoned Madolche Magileine, getting another from his Deck. He activated Power, then played Eternity to get back his Master. He used it to duplicate Power, then ran over Guaiba to drop Gonzalez to 6300 Life Points. The effects of Master and Power kicked in, getting Toshikawa two cards from his Deck: Spellbook of Fate and The Grand Spellbook Tower. Toshikawa activated Tower and Set two cards to his back row.
Gonzalez Set another Spell or Trap, then Summoned Cardcar D. Toshikawa responded with Spellbook of Fate, banishing Fate, Power, and Master from his Graveyard to banish Cardcar D before Gonzalez could use its effect! Gonzalez had two cards in hand with two cards Set.
Toshikawa drew Pot of Duality, then drew High Priestess of Prophecy with the effect of The Grand Spellbook Tower! He Summoned another Spellbook Magician of Prophecy, activated its effet, and Gonzalez responded with Torrential Tribute. Toshikawa flipped Spellbook of Wisdom to keep his Madolche safe, then got Spellbook of Secrets with Magician. Magician was destroyed. Gonzalez didn’t want to reveal any more of his Deck, and knew he wasn’t going to win Game 1, so he conceded the first Duel.
Kento Toshikawa explodes with a flurry of Spellbooks and draws so many cards that his opponent just concedes the first Duel! Antonio Gonzalez would have to put in some major work to get back into this Match!
But he got off to a pretty good start in Duel 2! Gonzalez opened with Thunder King Rai-Oh, and Set three cards to his back row.
Toshikawa had a hand of Compulsory Evacuation Device; Spellbook Magician of Prophecy; Spellbook of Secrets; Spellbook of Eternity; High Priestess of Prophecy; and Heavy Storm. That Thunder King Rai-Oh was a major problem: it would lock down his Magician, Secrets, and any further search cards he might draw. He didn’t have a third Spellbook for Priestess, and couldn’t get to one with Spellbook Magician as long as Thunder King was still on the field. Toshikawa took a moment to think, then went for it: he activated Heavy Storm.
Gonzalez had no response! He lost Macro Cosmos, Dimensional Prison, and Fiendish Chain! Toshikawa Set Compulsory Evacuation Device.
Gonzalez attacked with Thunder King Rai-Oh for 1900 Battle Damage.
Toshikawa drew Spellbook of the Master! He Special Summoned High Priestess of Prophecy, and the assembled audience went wild!
He blew away Thunder King Rai-Oh by banishing Master from his hand, then Normal Summoned Spellbook Magician of Prophecy. That got him Spellbook of Fate, and he played Eternity to take back his Master. Spellbook of Secrets got him The Grand Spellbook Tower, then revealed Tower for Spellbook of the Master, copying Secrets to get another Spellbook of Eternity. Magician and Priestess made direct attacks, and Gonzalez dropped Gorz the Emissary of Darkness on Priestess’ attack, Special Summoning a 2500 ATK Emissary of Darkness Token! In Main Phase 2 Toshikawa Set Fate and activated Tower.
Gonzalez drew to three cards and Summoned Jurrac Guaiba. Gonzalez sent Gorz to attack High Priestess, and Toshikawa let it go, losing the Priestess. Guaiba attacked into Spellbook of Fate, and Toshikawa banished three ‘books to banish Guaiba. Compulsory Evacuation Device eliminated the Token. Gonzalez Set one card to his back row. He had one card left in hand.
Toshikawa drew Pot of Duality, and when he tried to use The Grand Spellbook Tower Gonzalez Chained Dust Tornado. Spellbook of Eternity got him back his Spellbook of Secrets, getting him Spellbook Magician of Prophecy, and that got him another Spellbook of Fate. He overlaid his Magicians for Shining Elf… Never seen that before! He banished three more Spellbooks to banish Gorz with Spellbook of Fate, then attacked for 1600 Battle Damage with the Spellcaster-Type Shining Elf. He passed with nothing else on the field, and Pot of Duality in hand.
Gonzalez drew to two cards. He Summoned Sabersaurus; ate Shining Elf’s effect to reduce its ATK; but his last card was Monster Reborn! Gonzalez Special Summoned High Priestess and swung over Shining Elf, making a direct attack with Sabersaurus.
Toshikawa drew Spellbook of Secrets. He activated it to search his Deck for his last Spellbook Magician of Prophecy, then activated Pot of Duality, revealing Spellbook of Wisdom, Dust Tornado, and Torrential Tribute. He kept Torrential. He Summoned Spellbook Magician of Prophecy to get Spellbook of Power, and activated it to power up the Magician. That let Toshikawa attack over Sabersaurus, and got him Spellbook of Secrets. He Set Torrential (since he’d already used a Secrets this turn).
Gonzalez drew and Set a card to his back row, and attacked over Spellbook Magician of Prophecy.
Toshikawa drew Effect Veiler. He Set it.
Gonzalez activated Macro Cosmos, then attacked to destroy Veiler. He Set another Spell or Trap.
Toshikawa drew Dark Hole! He destroyed High Priestess of Prophecy with it, banishing her, and ended.
Gonzalez Summoned Kabazauls, and lost it to Torrential Tribute.
Toshikawa drew another High Priestess of Prophecy, with no way to Summon it.
Gonzalez drew Rescue Rabbit! He Summoned it, Special Summoned two Sabersaurus, and both Dinosaurs attacked to win the Duel!
Antonio Gonzalez fights back after losing three cards to a Turn 1 Heavy Storm! We’re headed to one more Duel!
Toshikawa started with Compulsory Evacuation Device; Dark Hole; Heavy Storm; Spellbook of Power; High Priestess of Prophecy; and Spellbook of the Master. That’s a pretty awesome hand, though another Spellbook to lock in the Priestess Summon would be welcome.
Gonzalez Set a Spell or Trap, and Summoned Thunder King Rai-Oh!
Toshikawa drew another Power! He destroyed Fiendish Chain with Heavy Storm, then unleashed High Priestess of Prophecy!
Toshikawa activated Spellbook of Power on High Priestess, then replicated Power with Spellbook of the Master. Priestess attacked over Thunder King Rai-Oh with 4500 ATK, and with Thunder King off the field – and after a brief consultation with the Head Judge – Toshikawa searched out Spellbook of Secrets and Spellbook of Fate. Secrets got him Spellbook Magician of Prophecy, and he used its effect to get Spellbook of Eternity. He Set Fate and Compulsory Evacuation Device.
Gonzalez Summoned Jurrac Guaiba and attacked Magician: Toshikawa banished Secrets and Master for Fate, putting Guaiba face-down.
Toshikawa drew another Priestess! He activated Compulsory Evacuation Device, taking back his Spellbook Magician of Prophecy and Summoning it again to get a third Spellbook: Spellbook of Fate. He revealed three Spellbooks for another Priestess! The crowd went wild once again!
Fate let him take back his Spellbook of Secrets, and he played it to get Spellbook of the Master. He used that to take back his other Spellbook of the Master, duplicating Spellbook of Eternity. He powered up a Priestess with Power, then blew away the face-down Guaiba with Priestess, then made a string of direct attacks to knock Gonzalez down to 2400 Life Points. The last Priestess attacked over Gorz with Power, getting Spellbook of Wisdom from his Deck. His second Priestess effect in Main Phase 2 targeted the Emissary Token, but Gonzalez Chained Effect Veiler. That left Toshikawa to overlay for Number 11: Big Eye, taking the Token, and then Set two cards to his back row!
Gonzalez Normal Summoned a Tour Guide from the Underworld, then Special Summoned another!
He Xyz Summoned Number 30: Acid Golem of Destruction, and Toshikawa banished it with another Spellbook of Fate! Gonzalez Set one more card to his back row.
Toshikawa drew and activated Pot of Duality, getting Breaker the Magical Warrior, Effect Veiler, and Mystical Space Typhoon! Since Gonzalez only had one face-down left, he offered the handshake!
Both of these competitors are going to the Top 32, but that was one heckuva Match! Kento Toshikawa demonstrates the full power of the Prophecies!
