Round 8 Feature Match: Theerasak Poonsombat vs. Pablo Garcia

April 7th, 2013

We’re back with Theerasak Poonsombat, who’s managed to put in a great showing after his Round 1 loss. He’s facing off against Pablo Garcia this time. Each Duelist has two losses, so a win is needed for a shot at Day 2.

Duel 1

Poonsombat began with Hyper Hammerhead, Fabled Ashenveil, White Night Dragon, Call of the Haunted, Cloudian – Poison Cloud, and Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter. He Set Ryko.

Garcia started off strong with Graceful Charity! He discarded Botanical Lion and Blackwing – Zephyros the Elite, then played Drillroid. It attacked Ryko, and both monsters were destroyed. Ryko sent Autonomous Action Unit, Jinzo, and Goblindbergh to the Graveyard.

Poonsombat drew Goblin Attack Force. He played Hyper Hammerhead and attacked directly. He Set Call of the Haunted.

Garcia played Breaker the Magical Warrior. He used its effect on Poonsombat’s Call of the Haunted, and he Chained it to revive Jinzo! Jinzo came back, and survived after Call was destroyed! Breaker destroyed Hyper Hammerhead, and returned to the hand. Garcia Set a back row card.

Poonsombat drew Zaborg the Thunder Monarch. He played Goblin Attack Force and attacked with it and Jinzo, and put his Goblins in defense position. Garcia had only 1800 Life Points left, but Poonsombat had 7900.

Garcia wiped out Jinzo with his Set Offerings to the Doomed, then played Tanngrisnir of the Nordic Beasts. Tanngrisnir destroyed the Goblin Attack Force, and Garcia Set two back row cards.

But Poonsombat drew Harpie’s Feather Duster! It wiped out Soul Exchange and Needle Ceiling! He followed up with Fabled Ashenveil, and destroyed Tanngrisnir. It replaced itself with 2 Nordic Beast Tokens.

Garcia skipped his Draw Phase due to Offerings. He played out Goblindbergh and used it to Special Summon D.D. Assailant. He stacked them for Gem-Knight Pearl, and it destroyed Ashenveil in battle.

Poonsombat drew Witch of the Black Forest. He thought a long moment before finally playing Cloudian – Poison Cloud and crashing it into Pearl! Poonsombat took 2600 damage, Pearl was destroyed, and Garcia took 800 damage. Garcia had a mere 600 Life Points remaining.

Garcia played Breaker again, and attacked directly. In Main Phase 2, he equipped it with Horn of the Unicorn!

Poonsombat drew Ancient Gear Knight, and Set Witch of the Black Forest.

Breaker destroyed Witch next turn, and Poonsombat added Tanngrisnir of the Nordic Beasts to his hand. Garcia Set a card to his back row.

Poonsombat drew Treeborn Frog. He Set Tanngrisnir.

Breaker took it down on Garcia’s turn, and now both players had 2 Nordic Beast Tokens. Garcia Set a third back row card.

Poonsombat drew Caius the Shadow Monarch! He Tributed a token to banish Breaker, dealing the last 1000 damage he needed to win!

Theerasak Poonsombat

Theerasak Poonsombat takes a surprise win out of a difficult situation! The Duelists moved to their Side Decks, and the second Duel began quickly after.

Duel 2

Garcia Set a monster and two back row cards.

Poonsombat began with Twin-Barrel Dragon, Level Eater, Tanngrisnir of the Nordic Beasts, White Night Dragon, Goblindbergh, and Skilled White Magician. He Set Tanngrisnir.

Garcia Normal Summoned Dark Valkyria, then Flip Summoned Drillroid! Drillroid destroyed Tanngrisnir, preventing its effect, and Valkyria hit directly. In Main Phase 2 Garcia Xyz Summoned Gem-Knight Pearl.

Poonsombat drew Shield Warrior. He Normal Summoned Goblindbergh and Special Summoned Twin-Barrel Dragon with its effect. He targeted Pearl with Twin-Barrel’s effect, but it failed. Poonsombat continued, and Xyz Summoned Number 39: Utopia.

Garcia wouldn’t let Poonsombat stall, and destroyed Utopia with Fissure! Pearl struck directly, and Garcia Set a third back row card.

Poonsombat drew Reckless Greed. He Set it and Shield Warrior.

Garcia played Breaker and used its effect, and Poonsombat Chained his Reckless Greed to draw Fabled Ashenveil and Darkworld Shackles. Pearl destroyed Shield Warrior, and Breaker struck directly.

Poonsombat skipped his Draw Phase due to Reckless Greed. He Set Skilled White Magician, then tried to use Darkworld Shackles on Pearl, but Garcia had Spell Shield Type-8! On his own turn, Garcia wiped out Poonsombat’s monster with Raigeki to take the win!

Pablo Garcia

Pablo Garcia evens it up! For one of these Duelists, this next Duel will be their last chance at making it to Day 2! The Duelists shook hands, and Poonsombat will be going first in the final Duel.

Duel 3

Poonsombat had Reckless Greed, Goblin Attack Force, Ancient Gear Knight, Caius the Shadow Monarch, Treeborn Frog, and Blast with Chain. He Set his Frog – a really great opener in Sealed play.

Garcia Set a card to each zone.

Poonsombat drew Goblindbergh. He played Ancient Gear Knight and sent it to destroy Garcia’s Shield Warrior. He Set Blast with Chain.

Garcia had Breaker again! “My favorite card, I drew it all three games!” It targeted Poonsombat’s Blast with Chain, and Poonsombat Chained it! Blast with Chain was destroyed, and it destroyed Garcia’s Spell Shield Type-8. Garcia pressed on, using Horn of the Unicorn to strengthen Breaker and destroy Ancient Gear Knight. He Set a face-down spell or trap.

Poonsombat drew Darkworld Shackles. He Tributed his Treeborn Frog for Caius, and banished Breaker! Garcia took 1000 damage, and Horn of the Unicorn went to the top of the Deck. Poonsombat sent Caius to attack directly, then he Set Reckless Greed.

Garcia played Dark Valkyria and equipped it with Horn of the Unicorn, taking out Caius!

Poonsombat drew Solemn Judgment. He played Darkworld Shackles on Dark Valkyria, dropping it to 100 ATK and DEF (Shackles changes the ATK and DEF, not the Original ATK and DEF, so it overrides Horn of the Unicorn). Poonsombat Set Solemn Judgment to finish.

Garcia Tributed Dark Valkyria for Airknight Parshath, and Poonsombat took it out with Solemn Judgment! He dropped to 3700 Life Points to play it, just a little behind Garcia’s 4600.

Poonsombat drew Shield Warrior and sent it to attack directly.

Garcia passed.

Poonsombat drew Change of Heart! He played out Goblin Attack Force and hit directly with both monsters. Garcia had only 700 Life Points left. The Goblins went to defense position after attacking.

Garcia played Drillroid and took out the Goblin Attack Force. In Main Phase 2, he equipped Drillroid with Horn of the Unicorn. Next turn, Poonsombat used Change of Heart to take Drillroid, and take the win!

Theerasak Poonsombat is still in the competition! Pablo Garcia put up a great fight, but his road to Day 2 ends here!
