Top 32 Feature Match: Nick Tomlin vs. Mauricio Pavon

April 8th, 2013

San Bernadino, Tijuana

Welcome to the Top 32! Nick Tomlin is from San Bernadino, CA, and is using Wind-Ups in today’s tournament. He’s a Southern California judge, but he’s doing great as a player this weekend. He’s up against Mauricio Pavon, here from Tijuana, Mexico, who’s using Karakuri today.

Duel 1

Pavon started the Top 32 with Karakuri Komachi mdl 224 “Ninishi”. He used it to bring out Karakuri Merchant mdl 177 “Inashichi”, and added Karakuri Anatomy to his hand. He tuned Ninishi to Inashichi for Naturia Beast, then Set three back row cards.

Tomlin had 2 Mystical Space Typhoons, Fiendish Chain, Trap Stun, Wind-Up Rat, and Tour Guide From the Underworld. He Set his traps and one Typhoon.

Pavon passed.

Tomlin drew Solemn Warning. He played Tour Guide and got a second one, then Xyz Summoned Wind-Up Zenmaines. It attacked Naturia Beast and detached an Xyz Material. In Main Phase 2 Pavon tried to use Compulsory Evacuation Device on Zenmaines, but Tomlin played Trap Stun! He Set his Warning, and Zenmaines destroyed Naturia Beast.

Pavon Special Summoned Solar Wind Jammer, then followed up with Genex Ally Remote. He activated Karakuri Anatomy, then tried to go for Karakuri Steel Shogun mdl 00X “Bureido”, but lost to Warning. He Set Bottomless Trap Hole, but lost it to Tomlin’s Typhoon.

Tomlin drew Starlight Road. He Set it and Typhoon, and Zenmaines attacked directly.

Pavon passed.

Tomlin drew Heavy Storm and hit with Zenmaines.

Pavon Set Anatomy and lost it to Mystical Space Typhoon.

Tomlin drew Wind-Up Factory and played it, Zenmaines attacked again.

Pavon passed.

Tomlin drew Mirror Force and attacked directly again, setting Mirror Force to end. Pavon only had 2000 Life Points left.

Pavon passed.

Tomlin drew Torrential Tribute. He played Wind-Up Rat and attacked, then Zenmaines finished Pavon off!

Mauricio Pavon

Tomlin takes the first Duel, playing almost no monsters other than Wind-Up Zenmaines! After Solemn Warning, Pavon was left completely helpless. He’ll be going first in the next Duel, a huge advantage for a Deck that plays Naturia Beast and other Synchros so easily on the first turn.

Duel 2

Pavon Set a back row card.

Tomlin had Wind-Up Rat, Wind-Up Rabbit, Wind-Up Shark, Tragoedia, Wind-Up Factory, and Solemn Warning. He played Rabbit and Factory. It attacked directly. During the Battle Phase, he used his Rabbit’s effect, but Pavon used Mystical Space Typhoon on Factory. Tomlin Set Warning.

Pavon destroyed it next turn with Heavy Storm. He Special Summoned Solar Wind Jammer, Normal Summoned Ninishi, then Normal Summoned Karakuri Ninja mdl 919 “Kuick”. He Synchro Summoned Karakuri Steel Shogun mdl 00X “Bureido”, which brought another Ninishi to the field. He played Instant Fusion next, Fusion Summoning Cyber Saurus! He tuned Ninishi to it for another Bureido, and it brought Karakuri Strategist mdl 248 “Nishipachi” from the Deck in defense position. Its effect turned it to attack position, and each Bureido gave him a free draw. All four monsters attacked, leaving Tomlin with 200 Life Points, and he played Tragoedia on the last attack. In Main Phase 2 Pavon Synchro Summoned Naturia Landoise.

Tomlin’s Wind-Up Rabbit returned to play. He Summoned Rat, then Special Summoned Shark. He made Shark Level 3 and stacked it with Rabbit for Number 17: Leviathan Dragon. It detached Shark for its effect, and Pavon discarded Instant Fusion for Landoise to negate it. Tomlin turned Rat to defense position to revive Shark, and then Tragoedia became Level 3. He stacked Rat and Tragoedia for M-X-Saber Invoker! It brought Wind-Up Warrior to the field. Tomlin turned Shark and Warrior to Level 5 and Xyz Summoned Number 61: Volcasaurus! It attacked Landoise, then in Main Phase 2, it destroyed a Bureido. Finally, he Set Dimensional Prison.

Pavon attacked Volcasaurus with Bureido, and it was banished by Dimensional Prison. Pavon continued with Solar Wind Jammer and Genex Ally Remote, and Synchro Summoned a new Bureido. Its effect Special Summoned Nishipachi in defense position. Nishipachi’s effect moved it to attack position, and Bureido gave him a free card. He Set one to his back row.

Tomlin drew Tour Guide From the Underworld. He used Volcasaurus to blow up Bureido, then used Volcasaurus to Xyz Summon Gaia Dragon, the Thunder Charger, but it fell to Bottomless Trap Hole. He played Tour Guide for another Tour Guide, and Xyz Summoned Temtempo the Percussion Djinn. Temtempo destroyed Nishipachi, and Invoker ended the Match!

Nick Tomlin is moving to the Top 16 with Wind-Ups!
