Round 10: Jarel Winston versus Justin Ashe

May 12th, 2013

Jarel Winston is no stranger to Day 2 competition. Among other many other things, he even took 5th at the previous YCS held in New Jersey – YCS Edison. He’s up against Justin Ashe, who made the Top 8 at YCS Providence. These two have a long history together – Winston actually taught Ashe how to play! This matchup will see Winston’s Gadgets paired up with Ashe’s Fire Fists. It’s time to Duel!

Duel 1

Ashe started off Day 2 with Fire Formation – Tenki to add Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Bear to his hand. He Set a back row card and Summoned Gene-Warped Warwolf.

Winston’s Sunday opening hand was Ultimate Offering, Machina Fortress, Dimensional Prison, Torrential Tribute, Double Summon, and Tin Goldfish. He Set Offering and Prison.

Ashe sent Warwolf to attack. Winston used his Prison, and Ashe saved his monster with Forbidden Lance. He Set another back row card, then used a second Tenki to search out a second Bear.

Winston drew another Double Summon. He Set Torrential Tribute and a Double Summon.

Ashe Summoned Bear, Winston played Torrential Tribute, and Ashe had Starlight Road! He Special Summoned Stardust Dragon, then moved to his Battle Phase. Bear attacked, and Winston activated his Ultimate Offering to Set Tin Goldfish and block. Bear destroyed it, then Warwolf and Stardust Dragon struck directly. Ashe Set one card to his back row.

Winston drew Red Gadget! He Normal Summoned it to get Yellow Gadget . He flipped up his Double Summon to play Yellow, getting Green Gadget. He activated Ultimate Offering next, Ashe Chained Mystical Space Typhoon on it, and Winston Chained Offering yet again, paying a combined total of 1000 Life Points. On Chain Link 3 he Summoned Green Gadget, then Offering was destroyed (He could not use Green Gadget’s effect because its Summon was not the last thing to resolve.). Now controlling one of each Gadget, he stacked Red and Yellow for Gear Gigant X. Its effect got him Machina Gearframe from his Deck. He discarded Gearframe and Fortress to Special Summon the Fortress. Gear Gigant X destroyed Bear in battle, then Fortress crashed into Stardust Dragon, destroying both monsters. With Fortress’s effect, Winston destroyed Warwolf, leaving Green Gadget to attack directly.

Ashe played Bear, and pitched his Tenki to destroy Gear Gigant X. Bear destroyed Green Gadget in battle, and Set Fire Formation – Tensu from his Deck to the field. In Main Phase 2 he used Tensu to play another Warwolf, and Xyz Summoned Brotherhood of the Fire Fist – Tiger King. Its effect got him a Tenki, which he used to get his third Bear. Ashe Set a back row card to finish. Winston had only 2900 Life Points remaining, to Ashe’s 6100.

Winston drew Gearframe. He played it to search out Machina Cannon, and discarded it to revive Fortress. He sent Fortress to attack, but when Ashe flipped Mirror Force, Winston picked up his cards!

Justin Ashe

Justin Ashe takes the first Duel after shutting down Winston’s game-ending Ultimate Offering play! Winston needs to win two in a row if he wants to have a shot at the final cut, but Ashe won’t be making that easy for him.

Duel 2

Winston started off with Ultimate Offering, Double Summon, Solemn Warning, Green Gadget, Yellow Gadget , and Red Gadget. Ouch. He Set Offering and Warning, then played out Green to search a Red. Double Summon let him play that, and he got a Yellow. Winston stacked Green and Red for Gear Gigant X, which added Machina Gearframe to his hand.

Ashe blasted Ultimate Offering with Mystical Space Typhoon, then Summoned Rescue Rabbit. He banished it, and Winston did not use his Warning. Ashe Summoned 2 Sabersauruses from his Deck and stacked them for Evolzar Laggia, which Winston destroyed with Warning. He Set three back row cards.

Winston drew Fiendish Chain. He used Gear Gigant X’s effect, and Ashe activated his own Fiendish Chain to negate it. Winston Summoned Gearframe next, adding Machina Fortress to his hand. Gearframe attacked directly, and Winston Set Fiendish Chain. Finally, he equipped Gearframe to Gear Gigant X.

Ashe Summoned Tour Guide From the Underworld, which was promptly negated by Fiendish Chain.

Winston drew Mystical Space Typhoon. He played Yellow Gadget , which Ashe destroyed with Solemn Warning. Winston Special Summoned Gearframe from his Spell & Trap Card Zone, but it fell into Ashe’s Bottomless Trap Hole. Winston continued by discarding Red Gadget and Fortress to Special Summon the Fortress, and destroyed Tour Guide in battle. He Set Mystical Space Typhoon to finish.

Ashe Set Dimensional Prison, but lost it to Winston’s Typhoon in the End Phase.

Winston drew Torrential Tribute, but he wouldn’t need it. With Ashe at only 2700 Life Points, the Fortress on the field along with Yellow Gadget in his hand meant victory was his!

Jarel Winston

Jarel Winston evens the score! The winner of this final Duel will still have a shot at the Top 32.

Duel 3

Ashe began with Reborn Tengu and three back row cards.

Winston’s opening hand consisted of Gearframe, Fortress, Red Gadget, Yellow Gadget , Pot of Avarice, and Mirror Force. He played Gearframe first, and it was locked down by Fiendish Chain. He Set Mirror Force.

Ashe played out Sabersaurus, and ran it straight into Mirror Force. He’d planned for that, because he had Starlight Road! Sabersaurus took down Gearframe, then Stardust Dragon and Tengu struck directly. Ashe Set a back row card.

Winston drew Red Gadget. He played Yellow to get Green, then discarded Red and Fortress to Special Summon Fortress. Fortress attacked Stardust Dragon, and Ashe destroyed it with Mirror Force! In Main Phase 2, Winston revived Fortress again by discarding Red and Green, then activated Pot of Avarice! He returned four Gadgets and Gearframe to the Deck. “I didn’t teach you how to beat me; I taught you how to play!” Winston laughed. With Pot of Avarice, he drew Green Gadget and Tin Goldfish. If he could survive to use them, that could help make a comeback.

Ashe collided his Stardust Dragon with Fortress, and both monsters went down. Fortress destroyed Sabersaurus with its effect, and Reborn Tengu struck directly. Winston had a mere 2000 Life Points remaining, but Ashe’s Life Points were untouched.

Winston drew Mind Crush. He played his Tin Goldfish, Special Summoned Green Gadget… and Ashe had Torrential Tribute! Winston jumped up and demanded a hug from his friend, congratulating him on his win!

Justin Ashe is your winner, with Fire Fists!
