Round 9 Feature Match: Victor Santana versus Hansel Aguero

May 12th, 2013

We’re here with two New York Duelists for the final round of Saturday’s competition. Victor Santan is using a Constellar Deck, backed by Fire Fist support. We’ve seen a handful of such Decks today, but Victor’s has the best record of the day. He’s up against his friend, team mate, and 2011 North American WCQ winner Hansel Aguero! Aguero is using Mermails today. Neither Duelist wanted to be Dueling a friend, but they were ready to do what Duelists have to do! Since they were friends, both Duelists knew what the other was using. That should put an interesting twist on the Match.

Duel 1

Santana began the last round with Safe Zone, Effect Veiler, Monster Reborn, Fire Formation – Tenki, Call of the Haunted, and Constellar Pollux. He played Tenki to get Constellar Kaus in his hand. He played Pollux and Kaus together, and used Kaus’s effect on both of them to make them Level 5. He Xyz Summoned Constellar Pleiades and Set Safe Zone.

Aguero used Dark Hole, and Santana Chained Safe Zone to save Pleiades. Aguero Set three back row cards. During the End Phase, Pleiades returned one of them to Aguero’s hand.

Santana drew Photon Thrasher. He used Pleiades on his own Tenki, and Aguero Chained Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Safe Zone (and Pleiades with it). Santana Special Summoned Photon Thrasher, attacked, and Set Call of the Haunted.

Aguero Set a second back row card.

Santana drew Constellar Sheratan. Thrasher attacked directly. Still in the Battle Phase, he used Call of the Haunted on Kaus, but Aguero used Torrential Tribute. Santana Normal Summoned Sheratan and added Pollux to his hand. Next, he used Monster Reborn to revive Kaus. Kaus made Sheratan Level 4, and he Xyz Summoned Abyss Dweller.

Aguero discarded Mermail Abyssmegalo for the Mermail Abyssteus in his hand. He Special Summoned it in attack position, and Santana negated it with Effect Veiler. Abyssteus crashed into Abyss Dweller, destroying both monsters. Aguero Set a back row card.

Santana drew Mystical Space Typhoon. He used Tenki to get Kaus. He tried to play Pollux, but lost it to Solemn Warning.

Aguero Set a back row card.

Santana drew another Pollux! He played it, Aguero tried to negate it with Fiendish Chain, and Santana destroyed that with Mystical Space Typhoon. He played Kaus next, made both monsters Level 5, and Xyz Summoned Tiras, Keeper of Genesis for the win!

Victor Santana was sad to be beating his friend, but soldiered on nonetheless

Victor Santana takes the first Duel, thanks to his Constellars! The Duelists moved to their Side Decks, and the next Duel began quickly after.

Duel 2

Aguero started off with a Set back row card.

Santana had Monster Reborn, Fiendish Chain, Mystical Space Typhoon, Soul Drain, Tenki, and Constellar Algiedi. He played Tenki to get Kaus to his hand. Algiedi came down, and brought Kaus with it, but both were lost to Torrential Tribute! Santana Set Soul Drain.

Aguero destroyed Drain with Mystical Space Typhoon! He discarded 2 Atlantean Marksmen to Special Summon Mermail Abyssmegalo, adding Abyss-sphere to his hand. He attacked and Set two back row cards.

Santana drew Honest. He revived Kaus with Monster Reborn, then Normal Summoned Honest. He stacked both monsters for Starliege Paladynamo and detached Honest, reducing Abyssmegalo to 0 ATK! Paladynamo destroyed Abyssmegalo, and Santana Set Fiendish Chain.

Aguero flipped up his Heavy Storm, then Chained Abyss-sphere! He got Mermail Abysslinde with Abyss-sphere, and when Abyss-sphere was destroyed he got Mermail Abysspike to the field. He discarded Atlantean Dragoons with its effect, and added Moulinglacia the Elemental Lord and Genex Undine to his hand. He played Moulinglacia next, robbing Santana of Mystical Space Typhoon. Undine came after, sending Dragoons to the Graveyard to get Genex Controller and Deep Sea Diva. Moulinglacia destroyed Paladynamo, and Santana drew Dimensional Fissure with Paladynamo’s effect. Undine and Abysspike struck directly.

Santana drew, but only got Mind Crush in his time of need. He conceded, and we’re moving on to the final Duel!

We did fifty takes of Hansel Aguero, and this was the best one

Duel 3

Santana led off this last Duel of Day 1 with Dimensional Fissure, Tenki, Solemn Warning, Pollux, Sheratan, and Kaus. He played Pollux and Kaus, made both of them Level 5, and Xyz Summoned Pleiades. He Set Warning and played Dimensional Fissure. Aguero would be hard-pressed to find a way out of this.

Aguero Set two back row cards and a monster. In the End Phase, Santana returned a back row card with Pleiades.

Santana drew Torrential Tribute. He used Pleiades once again, returning the other back row card. Next, he used Tenki to search out Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Bear. Bear used Tenki to destroy Aguero’s Set Genex Controller, then attacked directly. It Set another Tenki on the field, and Pleiades attacked as well. In Main Phase 2 he used Pleiades to Xyz Summon Constellar Ptolemy M7!

Aguero tried to use Monster Reborn on Kaus, but Santana negated it with Warning. Aguero played Abysspike and crashed it into Bear, then Set a back row card.

Santana drew another Tenki. He activated the Set one to search out Kaus. He used Ptolemy M7 to return Pollux from his Graveyard to his hand. Next, he played Sheratan to search out Agiedi. He Set Torrential Tribute.

Aguero Normal Summoned Atlantean Dragoons to destroy Sheratan in battle.

Santana drew Soul Drain. He played Pollux, Aguero tried to negate it with Fiendish Chain, but Santana used Torrential Tribute! That got Pollux off the field and away from Fiendish Chain’s negation. He used his extra Normal Summon to play Agiedi, which Special Summoned Kaus, and Aguero conceded!

Victor Santana is the winner, using Constellars!
