Saturday Dragon Duel Final: Ben Leverett versus Jared Schaefer
Ben is from Atlanta, Jared is from Long Island. Jared’s first YCS
Ben Leverett is a multiple Dragon Duel Champion, and he’s back for yet another title using Mermails. He’s up against Jared Schaefer, a Long Island Duelist packing Six Samurai. Legendary Six Samurai – Shi En is known for shutting down many Decks, but Mermails are largely based on their monster effects. Would Leverett have the edge?
Duel 1
Leverett began with Mermail Abyssteus, discarding Mermail Abyssleed. He added Mermail Abyssgunde to his hand. Next, he Normal Summoned Mermail Abysspike. He discarded Abyssgunde to search out Atlantean Marksman, and Abyssgunde revived Abyssleed. He used Abyssleed to Tribute Abysspike, robbing Schaefer of Mirror Force. Finally, he stacked Abyssteus and Abyssleed for Mermail Abyssgaios.
Schaefer started with Shien’s Dojo, Six Samurai United, Legendary Six Samurai – Kageki, Asceticism of the Six Samurai, and Kagemusha of the Six Samurai. He played United and Dojo, then Normal Summoned Kageki. When he activated Kageki’s effect, Leverett used Abyssgaios to negate it.
Leverett played Abysspike, discarding Atlantean Dragoons. He added Marksman and Mermail Abyssmegalo to his hand. He discarded Abyssgunde and Dragoons for Abyssmegalo. He added Abyss-sphere and Deep Sea Diva to his hand, then Special Summoned Abyssleed from his Graveyard. He activated Abyssgaios’s effect, then Tributed Abysspike for Abyssmegalo’s effect. He attacked with everything to quickly take the first Duel!
Ben Leverett won’t let Jared Schaefer’s Samurai get off the ground, and crushes them with Mermails! Side Decking was swift, as each Duelist was prepared for the other. Schaefer sided in three copies of Soul Drain, a great card here. It would shut down the Atlanteans and many Mermails without hindering his key Samurai effects, but would it be enough?
Duel 2
Schaefer started off with Shien’s Dojo, Asceticism of the Six Samurai, Mirror Force, Bottomless Trap Hole, Elder of the Six Samurai, and Soul Drain. He Set all of his traps, activated Dojo, then played Elder. He used Asceticism to get Kagemusha from his Deck, and Synchro Summoned Legendary Six Samurai – Shi En! He sent Dojo to the Graveyard to Special Summon Hand of the Six Samurai. What a field!
In Leverett’s Draw Phase, Schaefer used Soul Drain. Leverett played Upstart Goblin, increasing Schaefer’s Life Points. Next, he used Mystical Space Typhoon on Soul Drain, which Shi En negated. But Leverett had planned for that, and used Dark Hole! He discarded Atlantean Dragoons for Mermail Abyssteus. Schaefer banished Abyssteus with Bottomless Trap Hole, and Dragoons was unable to do anything under Soul Drain. Abyssteus’s effect still searched out Mermail Abysslinde, which Leverett Summoned. He attacked, but lost it to Mirror Force. Leverett Set a back row card.
Schaefer drew Shien’s Smoke Signal. He used it to search out Kageki and Set it.
Leverett passed.
Schaefer drew Six Samurai United. He Set it.
Leverett discarded Abysslinde for Abyssteus. Its effect added Mermail Abysspike to his hand. Next, he Tributed Abyssteus for Vanity’s Fiend! It destroyed Kageki in battle.
Schaefer drew another United and Set it.
Leverett turned Vanity’s Fiend to defense position and played Abysspike. He attacked directly with it.
Schaefer drew and Set Asceticism.
Leverett hit directly with Abysspike.
Schaefer drew another Shien’s Smoke Signal, and searched out Kagemusha. He activated both copies of United, then played Kagemusha, but Leverett had Solemn Warning to keep him from gaining Bushido Counters!
Leverett turned Vanity’s Fiend to attack position. He struck directly with it and Abysspike.
Schaefer drew Legendary Six Samurai – Kizan. He Summoned it, then sent both copies of United to the Graveyard to get Soul Taker and Elder. Soul Taker finally destroyed Vanity’s Fiend, and Schaefer was free to use Asceticism! He got The Six Samurai – Zanji to the field. He stacked Kizan and Zanji for Blade Armor Ninja! It detached Zanji to attack twice, destroying Abysspike in the process.
Leverett discarded Abyssgunde and Diva to Special Summon Abyssmegalo. He searched out Abyss-sphere and destroyed Blade Armor Ninja.
Schaefer drew another Kizan. He Special Summoned Elder and Kizan, both in defense position.
Leverett Normal Summoned Heavy Infantry and Tributed it for Abyssmegalo’s effect to attack twice, then used Abyss-sphere for Abyssleed. Abyssmegalo wiped out Schaefer’s Samurai, and Abyssleed ended it all!
