Top 4 Feature Match: James Guerrero vs. Galo Orbea

May 13th, 2013

We’re down to four! James Guerrero is one of our three Mermail players, while Galo Orbea your last chance to see the Brotherhood of the Fire Fist in action. Will our finals be a Mermail mirror match, or do the Fire Fists have what it takes?

Duel 1

Guerrero would start us off in the Top 4, with a hand of Mermail Abyssmegalo, Mermail Abysslinde, Mermail Abysspike, Mermail Abyssteus, Pot of Avarice, and Abyss-sphere. He Set Abysslinde and Abyss-sphere.

Orbea used Fire Formation – Tenki to get Brotherhood of the Fire Fist – Gorilla. He Summoned it, and attacked Abysslinde. Abysslinde Special Summoned Mermail Abyssleed, and Gorilla Set Tenki from the Deck. In Main Phase 2 Orbea used Gorilla to destroy Guerrero’s Abyss-sphere. He played Pot of Duality next, revealing Cardcar D, Dark Hole, and Dimensional Prison – he took Prison. He Set three more back row cards, along with the Tenki he’d Set earlier.

Guerrero drew Mermail Abyssgunde. He discarded Abyssteus to search out Atlantean Marksman with Abysspike’s effect. Abyssleed Tributed Abysspike to knock Pot of Duality out of Orbea’s hand, then Guerrero used Abyssmegalo! He discarded Marksman and Abyssgunde, and Special Summoned Abyssmegalo. Orbea had no responses to any of the effects, so Guerrero got Abyss-sphere with Abyssmegalo, revived Abyssteus in defense position, and destroyed the face-down Tenki. Abyssleed attacked into Prison, and Abyssmegalo destroyed Gorilla. In Main Phase 2 Guerrero Xyz Summoned Abyssgaios, and lost it to Torrential Tribute. He played Pot of Avarice next, returning Abyssgaios, Marksman, Abyssmegalo, Abyssteus, and Abyssgunde to the Deck. He drew Abyssmegalo and Abysspike, and Set Abyss-sphere.

Orbea had Rescue Rabbit! He banished it for two Gene-Warped Warwolves and attacked with one. Guerrero used Abyss-sphere to Special Summon Abysslinde, but lost it to Bottomless Trap Hole! Each Warwolf hit directly, halving Guerrero’s Life Points. In Main Phase 2, Orbea Xyz Summoned Abyss Dweller.

Abyss Dweller attacked directly.

Guerrero drew Atlantean Dragoons, and had it run over Abyss Dweller.

Orbea had Monster Reborn! He revived Gene-Warped Warwolf and destroyed Dragoons. Guerrero had only 2100 Life Points. Orbea Set a back row card, and Guerrero used Abyss-sphere to Special Summon Abysslinde. When Abyss-sphere destroyed it in the End Phase, he Special Summoned Abyssmegalo.

Guerrero drew his own Monster Reborn! It revived Dragoons, which were Tributed for Abyssmegalo’s effect. Dragoons searched out Deep Sea Diva. Abyssmegalo attacked Gene-Warped Warwolf, but was blocked by Fiendish Chain. In Main Phase 2 Guerrero played Diva to Special Summon Marksman, and Synchro Summoned Ally of Justice Catastor.

Orbea Set a back row card.

Guerrero drew Dragoons, and had Catastor destroy Gene-Warped Warwolf.

Orbea topdecked Fire Formation – Tenki! He got Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Bear, and used up his Tenki so Bear could destroy Catastor.

Guerrero drew Mystical Space Typhoon, and destroyed Fiendish Chain! He Normal Summoned Dragoons next, Tributed it for Abyssmegalo, and got a Diva. Abyssmegalo attacked Bear, then attacked directly. The score was now 3900-2100, with Orbea still leading.

Orbea Set a second back row card.

Guerrero drew Bottomless Trap Hole. Fredella’s Abyssmegalo and Bottomless were lost to Mirror Force and Mystical Space Typhoon, respectively.

Orbea Set his only card, a spell or trap.

Guerrero drew Abyssteus. He tried to play Diva, but Orbea negated the Summon with Solemn Judgment!

Orbea Set yet another spell or trap.

Guerrero drew Marksman. He discarded it to Special Summon Abyssteus, and destroyed Mystical Space Typhoon. Abyssteus searched out Abysspike, and his two Mermails finished off Orbea’s Life Points!

James Guerrero takes the first Duel, and he’s just one win away from the finals! Galo Orbea has got to take back-to-back wins to stay in the tournament, now.

Duel 2

Orbea began with Dimensional Fissure and Rescue Rabbit! He banished Rabbit, which got 2 Gene-Warped Warwolves, which became Tiger King, which got Tenki from the Deck, which got Bear to the hand. He Set two back row cards.

Guerrero started off this time with Heavy Storm, 2 Marksmen, Abyss-sphere, Bottomless Trap Hole, and Diva. He started with Heavy Storm, and Orbea had Solemn Judgment. Guerrero continued with Diva bringing Atlantean Heavy Infantry to the field. He Normal Summoned Marksman, and used all three monsters for Black Rose Dragon! The field was cleared, and Guerrero Set Bottomless Trap Hole and Abyss-sphere to finish.

James Guerrero is pleased

Orbea used Pot of Duality, revealing Bottomless Trap Hole, Mystical Space Typhoon, and Dimensional Fissure, choosing the latter. He played Bear next, and it fell into Guerrero’s Bottomless Trap Hole. Orbea could only play the Dimensional Fissure.

Guerrero drew Marksman and used it to attack directly. It Special Summoned Dragoons, which also attacked, and his Set Abyss-sphere meant Guerrero was going to the finals!
