Round 10 Feature Match: William Montes versus Michael Klasel
It’s Sunday, and we’re ready to kick things off with more Dueling! William Montes is a Los Angeles Duelist, who brought Evilswarm to San Mateo. He’ s up against Michael Klasel, a Dallas Duelist packing Spellbooks. Klasel has decided to forgo the usual Spellbook setup of World of Prophecy and Temperance of Prophecy, instead opting for version he feels is more consistent and controlling. He feels that Spellbook Decks win most when they have access to Spellbook of Secrets, so he’s using Justice of Prophecy to make that happen.
Duel 1
Klasel started Sunday off with The Grand Spellbook Tower, Spellbook of Fate, Spellbook Library of the Crescent, Justice of Prophecy, Bottomless Trap Hole, and Fiendish Chain. He used Crescent first, choosing Spellbook of Secrets, Spellbook of the Master, and Spellbook of Wisdom. Montes picked one at random, and Secrets went to his hand. He played it, getting Master. He played Justice, revealed Tower so Master could copy Secrets, and searched for Wisdom. He Set Fiendish Chain and Bottomless Trap Hole, played Tower, then used Justice to get High Priestess of Prophecy and Secrets.
Montes Normal Summoned Evilswarm Castor and Evilswarm Thunderbird. They each attacked directly, dropping Klasel to 4600. In Main Phase 2, Montes Xyz Summoned Evilswarm Ophion. Klasel used Bottomless Trap Hole, Montes used Infestation Pandemic to save Ophion, and Klasel used Fiendish Chain on Ophion so it’d be negated (Klasel knew about Pandemic, but he had High Priestess in hand for next turn). Montes Set three back row cards.
Klasel drew Kycoo the Ghost Destroyer. He Special Summoned High Priestess and banished Crescent to target a spell or trap. Montes Chained the targeted Safe Zone, trying to destroy High Priestess, but Klasel saved her with Wisdom. He played Secrets next, getting Spellbook of Power. Kycoo came next, and Power was played on High Priestess. Klasel sent her to destroy Ophion, and Montes chose to use Compulsory Evacuation Device on his own Ophion so Klasel couldn’t search with Spellbook of Power. High Priestess and Kycoo attacked directly, and Kycoo banished Montes’s monsters in the Graveyard. He Set Spellbook of Fate.
Montes looked at his next draw, and conceded immediately! He’d made a quick Ophion backed by a lot of protection, but Klasel was able to power right through it all!
Duel 2
Montes played Evilswarm Castor and Evilswarm Mandragora, stacked them for Evilswarm Ophion, and searched out Infestation Pandemic . He Set three back row.
Klasel had Spellbook Magician of Prophecy, Torrential Tribute, Spellbook of the Master, Mystical Space Typhoon, Spellbook of Secrets, and drew a second Spellbook Magician. He played a Magician, Montes used Fiendish Chain, and Klasel used Mystical Space Typhoon to force the effect through. He searched out Spellbook of Fate, then played Secrets for The Grand Spellbook Tower. He played Master, copying Secrets to get Spellbook of Eternity. He activated Tower, Set Fate and Torrential, and passed.
Montes attacked with Ophion, destroying the Magician. Montes played Thunder King Rai-Oh in Main Phase 2, and Klasel used Torrential Tribute. Ophion was saved by Infestation Pandemic , but Rai-Oh was destroyed. Montes searched out another Pandemic with Ophion’s effect, and Set two to his back row.
Klasel drew Mystical Space Typhoon, tried to use Tower. Montes played one of his newly Set cards, Mystical Space Typhoon, to destroy it first (It could not activate its second effect because it was destroyed in Chain Link 2, missing its activation window). He played his second Spellbook Magician of Prophecy to get Secrets. He played Mystical Space Typhoon next, targeting the other newly Set card he knew to be Pandemic. When Montes Chained it, Klasel Chained Fate to banish Ophion! He banished Secrets, Master, and Tower for Fate. Klasel played Secrets next, getting Tower. Eternity was next, getting Master, and Master copied Secrets to get another Fate. Spellbook Magician attacked into Mirror Force, and Klasel played Tower to finish.
Montes played Thunderbird and attacked, then Set a back row card.
Klasel drew High Priestess, and once again lost his Tower to Mystical Space Typhoon!
Montes attacked with Thunderbird. He Set a back row.
Klasel drew Spellbook of Wisdom and passed.
Thunderbird attacked.
Klasel drew a useless Mystical Space Typhoon, and Thunderbird finished him off next turn!
William Montes makes a slow comeback, poking away with Thunderbird while Klasel has nothing to stop him! We’re moving on to a third game!
Duel 3
Klasel started with Magician, Fate, Solemn Warning, Mirror Force, and 2 Mystical Space Typhoons. Magician gave him Secrets, which gave him Master, which got Eternity. He Set the traps and Typhoons.
Montes Special Summoned Mandragora and attacked. Klasel played Mirror Force, Montes thought a moment, and allowed it. He Set five to his back row.
Klasel drew Secrets. He played it, and Montes Chained Macro Cosmo, only to lose it to Klasel’s Mystical Space Typhoon. Secrets resolved, getting Magician. He played it, and Solemn Warning stopped it cold. Klasel banished Master and Secrets to turn his first Magician face-down with Fate, then Flip Summoned it to search out Tower. Eternity got back Master, which copied Secrets to search out Fate. He played Tower, Set Fate, and passed.
Montes drew and Set to his back row.
Klasel drew Fiendish Chain, and lost Tower to Mystical Space Typhoon. He attacked, Montes used Dimensional Prison, and Klasel Chained Spellbook of Fate, banishing Tower and Fate to turn Magician face-down. He Set Fiendish Chain.
Montes drew and Set to his back row.
Klasel drew Wisdom. He flipped up Magician to get Secrets, then that got another Magician. He played it to search out Tower. The Magicians attacked directly, then Klasel played Tower and Set Wisdom.
Montes played Reinforcement of the Army for Castor, but lost it to Klasel’s Solemn Warning.
Klasel drew another Fiendish Chain, returned Master with Tower, and got Justice. He played Justice, Montes used Bottomless Trap Hole, and Wisdom protected it. In the End Phase, Justice got High Priestess and Eternity.
Montes played Thunder King Rai-Oh and passed.
Klasel drew Breaker the Magical Warrior, and Tower returned Fate to get Rivalry of Warlords. He played Breaker to destroy a Set Infestation Infection. Klasel used Mystical Space Typhoon on the last face-down card, but the targeted Compulsory Evacuation Device was chained on Magician. Fiendish Chain negated Rai-Oh, freeing up Klasel to use his search cards. Eternity grabbed Secrets, which got Power. He used Power to strengthen Breaker, destroyed Rai-Oh in battle and searched out Fate, then attacked with Magician. He Set Fate and Rivalry. Montes had no cards on the field or in his hand, and conceded when he drew his last card!
Michael Klasel is victorious with Spellbooks!
