Round 9 Feature Match: Timothy Bailey versus Kevin Tran

October 6th, 2013

Timothy Bailey is here from Olympia, WA, and is one of the few Wind-Up Duelists today. He’s facing Kevin Tran from Sacramento, CA, using Spellbooks. Bailey was quick to note that Spellbooks were his most feared matchup. Will he create a self-fulfilling prophecy?

Duel 1

Tran began with Spellbook Library of the Crescent. He picked The Grand Spellbook Tower, Spellbook of the Master, and Spellbook of Fate, and one of them was randomly put into his hand. He played Spellbook of Secrets, getting Spellbook Magician of Prophecy. That came down, and he got Master. Master revealed Tower to copy Secrets, searching out Spellbook of Wisdom. He played Tower, Set two back row, and passed.

Bailey started off the final round of the day with Wind-Up Rabbit, Wind-Up Shark, Wind-Up Magician, Vanity’s Emptiness, Maxx “C”, and Upstart Goblin. He played Goblin to get Messenger of Peace. He played Rabbit, and its Summon was negated by Solemn Warning. Bailey Set Emptiness and Messenger.

Tran used Tower to return Master to the bottom of his Deck and draw an extra card. He revealed Spellbook of Power, Spellbook of Life, and Spellbook Library of the Crescent for the effect of High Priestess of Prophecy, but Bailey Chained Vanity’s Emptiness. Tran activated Spellbook of Power on Spellbook Magician, then Spellbook of Fate banished Power, Crescent, and Secrets to banish Vanity’s Emptiness. He tried using High Priestess again, and Bailey used Maxx “C” to draw Upstart Goblin. High Priestess banished Fate to destroy Messenger, and now that his Graveyard was empty, Tran played Crescent. He revealed Secrets, Master, and Spellbook of Eternity, getting one at random. Tran revealed Wisdom to play Master, copying Crescent. This time he picked Eternity, Secrets, and Fate, and got one into his hand. He played Secrets next, getting Spellbook Magician. He Normal Summoned it, searching out Fate. He stacked his two Spellbook Magicians for Daigusto Phoenix, and Bailey got Bottomless Trap Hole from his Maxx “C”. Daigusto Phoenix used its effect on itself, and it attacked twice. High Priestess attacked as well, and Tran Set two back row cards.

Bailey drew Wind-Up Rabbit. Upstart Goblin gave him Mirror Force. He Normal Summoned Magician and activated Shark from his hand. Magician Special Summoned Rabbit from the Deck, and Tran used Fate to turn Shark face-down. Bailey Set Bottomless Trap Hole and Mirror Force.

Tran used Tower, returning Fate to draw a card. High Priestess banished Secrets to destroy Mirror Force, then Eternity got back Secrets. Secrets got Power, which powered up High Priestess. Master copied Power, powering her up even more. Tran used Daigusto Phoenix’s effect, and moved to the Battle Phase. Bailey banished Magician with Rabbit’s effect. High Priestess destroyed Shark in battle, getting Fate and Eternity. Bailey knew that without that Mirror Force, he’d be unable to mount a comeback, and conceded.

Kevin Tran uses the constant searching power of Spellbooks to get everything he needs, finally overwhelming his opponent! Bailey had a precise plan for Side Decking, and was finished quickly. Tran needed to think a bit longer, as he probably wasn’t expecting Wind-Ups.

Duel 2

Bailey led off with Thunder King Rai-Oh, Tour Guide From the Underworld, Dark Hole, Pot of Duality, Wind-Up Factory, and Mind Crush. He played Pot of Duality first, revealing Wind-Up Magician, Wind-Up Warrior, and Compulsory Evacuation Device. He quickly took Magician, Set Factory and Mind Crush, then Summoned Thunder King Rai-Oh.

Tran Set four back row cards.

Bailey drew Wind-Up Shark. Thunder King Rai-Oh attacked into Fiendish Chain, and in Main Phase 2 Bailey flipped Factory. He Normal Summoned Magician and activated Shark, and Tran destroyed Factory with Mystical Space Typhoon, and also Chained Vanity’s Emptiness. Shark remained in the hand, and Factory was destroyed.

Bailey

Tran played Spellbook of Secrets to get Spellbook Magician of Prophecy. Vanity’s Emptiness destroyed itself, and Bailey used Mind Crush to get rid of the Spellbook Magician. He saw that Tran had Bottomless Trap Hole and The Grand Spellbook Tower in his hand. Tran played Tower and Set Bottomless Trap Hole.

Bailey drew DNA Surgery. He stacked Magician and Rai-Oh for Maestroke the Symphony Djinn, then played Tour Guide From the Underworld. He activated its effect, and Tran Chained Summon Limit! Tour Guide and Maestroke attacked directly.

Tran used Tower to return Secrets, and Bailey used DNA Surgery turning everything into Beast-Warriors.

Bailey drew Effect Veiler. Maestroke and Tour Guide attacked directly.

Tran passed.

Bailey drew Solemn Warning. He attacked once more, and Tran had nothing to stop him!

Timothy Bailey fights back, preventing Tran from making any meaningful plays! This Duel will determine the Match, as well as the standings for the first day here at YCS San Mateo.

Duel 3

Tran started this time with Spellbook Library of the Crescent. He randomly got one card from amongst Spellbook of the Master, Spellbook of Secrets, and The Grand Spellbook Tower. He Set two back row cards.

Bailey had Compulsory Evacuation Device, Fiendish Chain, Mirror Force, Tour Guide From the Underworld, Wind-Up Rat, and Wind-Up Factory. He played Tour Guide first, but she was held up by Fiendish Chain. Bailey Set his traps.

Tran passed.

Bailey drew Dark Hole. He played Rat and stacked it with Tour Guide for M-X-Saber Invoker. He detached Rat, and Tran Chained Summon Limit.

Tran played Spellbook Magician of Prophecy, Bailey played Fiendish Chain, and Tran had Spellbook of Wisdom! Magician’s effect went through, and Tran got Spellbook of Secrets. That got him Spellbook of the Master, and he revealed Tower so Master could copy Secrets. He searched out Spellbook of Fate. He played Fate, banishing Crescent, Wisdom, and Secrets to banish M-X-Saber Invoker. Spellbook Magician attacked directly. Tran played Tower to finish.

Tran

Bailey drew Mystical Space Typhoon. He Set it.

Tran activated Tower, but lost it to Mystical Space Typhoon (It missed its timing to activate because it was destroyed in Chain Link 2). Spellbook Magician went to defense position.

Bailey drew Wind-Up Rabbit. He played it and Factory, attacked Magician, then banished Rabbit. Factory got him another Rabbit.

Tran Set a spell or trap.

Bailey drew Effect Veiler and returned Rabbit to play. He played his second Rabbit and attacked with both. The Life Points stood at 5200 to 7500 with Bailey in the lead. Bailey banished Rabbit, and Factory gave him Magician.

Tran played Temperance of Prophecy, and it was bounced away by Compulsory Evacuation Device. In the End Phase, Bailey banished his Rabbit, and Factory got him another Rabbit.

Bailey drew Shark, and returned both Rabbits to play. He played his third Rabbit and attacked with all three.

Tran played Temperance. He used Spellbook of Power on it, then used Temperance’s effect to bring High Priestess of Prophecy to the field. Bailey used a Rabbit, and Factory gave him Wind-Up Rat. High Priestess banished Master, but was shut down by Effect Veiler. Tran played Master to copy Power, but when High Priestess crashed into Mirror Force, he offered the handshake!

Timothy Bailey is moving to Day 2 with Wind-Ups!
