Ultimate Pegasus Challenge – Final Round Feature Match: Jon Girard vs. Randall Varasteh
The Ultimate Pegasus Challenge has been one of the most popular events of the weekend. The Ultimate Pegasus Challenge is an Advanced Format tournament with a twist – every so often, the Tournament Organizer, taking on the role of Maximillion Pegasus, will declare a special rule that all participating Duelists must temporarily follow. Jon Girard and Randall Varasteh are two friends from Connecticut that both participated in the Ultimate Pegasus Challenge and fought through it to emerge with 3-0 records. Now, they’re facing off against one another in this final round. Only one of them will finish the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record. It’s time to Duel!
Duel One
Girard opened up Duel 1 with Cards of Consonance, Book of Moon, Redox, Dragon Ruler of Boulders, Flamvell Guard, Solemn Warning, and Terraforming. He activated Terraforming to add Dragon Ravine from his Deck to his hand and then activated it. He discarded Redox to add Dragunity Phalanx from his Deck to his hand with the effect of his Ravine. That’s when the first of Pegasus’s new rules took effect:
PEGASUS: “Until further notice, you now draw cards from your Side Deck. Before doing so, make sure you shuffle your Side Deck.”
Girard activated Cards of Consonance. He discarded Dragunity Phalanx to draw Xyz Encore and Raigeki Break from his Side Deck. He Set Book of Moon, Raigeki Break, Xyz Encore, and Solemn Warning before ending his turn.
Varasteh drew a card from his Side Deck and then Set 2 cards to his back row.
Girard drew Mystical Space Typhoon from his Side Deck. He tried to use the effect of his Ravine, but lost out to Varasteh’s Phoenix Wing Wind Blast, which returned Ravine to the top of Girard’s Deck. Girard Set a back row before passing his turn.
Varasteh Set a card to his back row.
Girard drew Dragon Ravine from his Side Deck and then activated the effect of Dragon Ravine to discard Xyz Encore and add Dragunity Dux from his Deck to his hand. That’s when Pegasus changed the rules again:
PEGASUS: “You must now draw cards from your Main Deck instead of your Side Deck.”
Varasteh passed his turn and lost a face-down Skill Drain to Mystical Space Typhoon in the End Phase.
Girard Summoned Dragunity Dux and used its effect to equip it with Phalanx; then he Special Summoned Phalanx and Synchro Summon Dragunity Knight – Vajrayana. He equipped Phalanx to Vajrayana, Special Summoned Phalanx, and then Synchro Summon Stardust Spark Dragon by Tuning Dragunity Knight – Vajrayana with Dragunity Phalanx. He activated Upstart Goblin to draw a card and give Varasteh 1000 Life Points, and then attacked directly with Stardust Spark Dragon to drop Varasteh down to 6500 Life Points. That’s when Pegasus’s new rule took effect:
PEGASUS: “I activate Joey’s Graverobber to steal Mai Valentine’s Harpie’s Feather Duster. Destroy all Spell and Trap Cards on the field!”
Girard lost 4 back rows and his Dragon Ravine, and Varasteh lost only a single back row to Pegasus’s rule.
Varasteh discarded Electric Virus (which he drew thanks to Pegasus’s earlier rule forcing Duelists to draw from their Side Decks) to take control of Stardust Spark Dragon and attack directly with it. Next, he used Dark Hole to destroy the Stardust Spark Dragon.
Girard activated Sacred Sword of Seven Stars to banish Blaster from his hand and draw 2 cards on his next turn. He added another Blaster to his hand with his Blaster’s effect and Set a card before ending his turn.
Varasteh drew a card and passed.

He Special Summoned Phalanx, and Varasteh discarded Maxx “C” to draw a card. Dux attacked Varasteh directly.
Varasteh activated the effect of Redox from his Graveyard to try to Special Summon it, but Pegasus’s new rule cut him off:
PEGASUS: “Remove all cards in all Graveyards from the Duel.”
Girard added a Redox to his hand with the effect of the Redox that Pegasus’s rule banished from his Graveyard, and Varasteh Set a back row before passing.
Girard Tuned Dux with Phalanx to Synchro Summon Vajrayana, equipped Vajrayana with Phalanx, and Special Summoned Phalanx. He sent Phalanx to the Graveyard to Special Summon Dragunity Arma Mystletainn, equipped it with Phalanx, and Special Summoned Phalanx back to the field. Next, he combined Mystletainn with Vajrayana to Xyz Summon Hieratic Dragon King of Atum and then detached an Xyz Material from it to Special Summon Tempest, Dragon Ruler of Storms from his Deck. That’s when Pegasus’s new rule took effect:
PEGASUS: “Destroy all Level 4 and lower monsters.”
Girard’s Phalanx was destroyed.
Girard discarded 2 Redoxes to Special Summon Phalanx back from his Graveyard with the effect of Redox. He Special Summoned Blaster next by banishing Redox and Vajrayana, and then Xyz Summoned Mecha Phantom Beast Dracossack by combining Blaster with Tempest. He detached an Xyz Material from Dracossack to Special Summon 2 Mecha Phantom Beast Tokens to the field, and Tuned them with Phalanx to Synchro Summon Scrap Dragon. Scrap Dragon destroyed Varasteh’s face-down Return from the Different Dimension with its effect, and Varasteh protected himself from the attacks of Girard’s monsters by Special Summoning Battle Fader from his hand. Girard activated Gold Sarcophagus to banish Return from the Different Dimension from his Deck before passing.
Varasteh used Black Rose Dragon to clear the field next turn, and then Special Summoned Blaster from his Graveyard. He attacked directly and Set a back row.
Girard Special Summoned Redox and Tempest from his Graveyard and then Xyz Summoned Number 11: Big Eye, and Varasteh flipped Book of Moon to put it face-down.
Varasteh Special Summoned Blaster and attacked Big Eye to destroy it. That’s when Pegasus’s new rule took effect:
PEGASUS: “For the next 3 turns, players play with their hands revealed.”
Girard Special Summoned Blaster by banishing Tempest and Redox, and used Tempest’s effect to add a Tempest from his Deck to his hand. He Set Return from the Different Dimension and Sacred Sword of Seven Stars before ending his turn. Varasteh flipped Sixth Sense in the End Phase calling 5 and 6, but Girard rolled a 1 and Varasteh just sent Mystical Space Typhoon from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard.
Varasteh Set a back row and passed.
Girard flipped Return from the Different Dimension. He Special Summoned Scrap Dragon, Blaster, Dragunity Phalanx, Mystletainn, and Stardust Spark Dragon from his banished zone. Direct attacks from his monsters finished Varasteh off!
Jon Girard wins Duel 1 after activating Return from the Different Dimension! Randall Varasteh will be going first in Duel 2!

Varasteh started off Duel 2 by activating Sacred Sword of Seven Stars to banish Tidal, Dragon Ruler of Waterfalls from his hand and draw 2 cards. Pegasus’s new rule quickly took effect:
