Round 1 Feature Match: Mike Zheng versus Ian Fraser

February 1st, 2014

12-year-old Mike Zheng from Georgia is competing in his first-ever YCS event this weekend with his Harpie Deck. His opponent, Alabama’s Ian Fraser, is using a Fabled Deck featuring the new Obedience Schooled Spell Card from Legacy of the Valiant! While Zheng is able to make a bunch of explosive plays with Divine Wind of Mist Valley, Hysteric Party, and his Harpie monsters, Fraser can turn the activation of Obedience Schooled into a field full of powerful monsters. It’s time to Duel!

Duel One

Zheng opened up Duel 1 with Harpie Dancer, Elegant Egotist, Harpies’ Hunting Ground, Hysteric Sign, and 2 copies of Terraforming.

Zheng's Duel 1 Opening Hand

He activated Terraforming to add Divine Wind of Mist Valley from his Deck to his hand, activated it, and then Summoned Harpie Dancer. Next, he returned Harpie Dancer to his hand with its effect and Summoned it back to his field. He used the effect of Divine Wind of Mist Valley to Special Summon Harpie Queen from his Deck in Attack Position. He combined Harpie Dancer with Harpie Queen to Xyz Summon Maestroke the Symphony Djinn in Attack Position and then ended his turn.

Fraser started off his turn by activating Obedience Schooled! He Special Summoned Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter, The Fabled Cerburrel, and The Fabled Nozoochee from his Deck.

Obedience Schooled

Next, he Normal Summoned The Fabled Cerburrel. He Tuned his Cerburrel with Ryko to Synchro Summon The Fabled Unicore, and then combined The Fabled Nozoochee with The Fabled Cerburrel to Xyz Summon Number 64: Ronin Raccoon Sandayu. He detached an Xyz Material from Sandayu to Special Summon a Kagemusha Raccoon Token to the field with 2300 ATK, matching the ATK of The Fabled Unicore. Next, he attacked Maestroke with The Fabled Unicore and his Token. Maestroke protected itself by detaching both of its Xyz Materials. Fraser Set a card to his back row before ending his turn.

Zheng Summoned Harpie Lady 1 on his next turn. Next, he activated Elegant Egotist; but The Fabled Unicore negated it because both players had exactly 3 cards in their hand! Zheng Set Hysteric Sign and then switched Maestroke to Defense Position before ending his turn.

Fraser detached his last Xyz Material from Number 64: Ronin Raccoon Sandayu to Special Summon another Kagemusha Raccoon Token to the field with 2300 ATK.

Getting Schooled

He attacked Harpie Lady 1 with The Fabled Unicore to destroy it and drop Zheng down to 6300 Life Points, and then Set a monster in Main Phase 2. Maestroke’s 2300 DEF protected Zheng from the attacks of Fraser’s other monsters.

Zheng drew Hysteric Party next turn and Set it.

Fraser Flip Summoned Ryko and activated its effect to destroy Maestroke and send Fabled Grimro, The Fabled Chawa, and Instant Fusion from his Deck to his Graveyard. Fraser attacked with The Fabled Unicore; but Zheng activated Hysteric Party to discard a card and Special Summon Harpie Lady 1, Harpie Queen, and Harpie Dancer from the Graveyard in Defense Position! The Fabled Unicore and both Tokens wiped out all of Zheng’s Harpies in battle, and then Fraser passed to Zheng.

Zheng Summoned Harpie Channeler and discarded Harpies’ Hunting Ground to Special Summon Harpie Dancer with Channeler’s effect. He returned the Dancer to his hand with its effect and Summoned it again, using Divine Wind of Mist Valley’s effect to Special Summon Harpie Queen from his Deck. He combined all 3 of his Harpies to Xyz Summon Number 91: Thunder Spark Dragon, and then detached all 3 Xyz Materials from it to wipe out all of Fraser’s monsters! Finally, Number 91: Thunder Spark Dragon attacked Fraser directly, dropping him down to 5600 Life Points!

Fraser activated Reckless Greed on his next turn to draw 2 cards. Then he discarded Fabled Kushano to Special Summon The Fabled Chawa. Next, he discarded Fabled Krus to return Kushano to his hand, and activated Krus’s effect to Special Summon Fabled Grimro from his Graveyard. He Tuned Grimro with Chawa to Synchro Summon Ally of Justice Catastor, and then attacked Number 91: Thunder Spark Dragon, destroying it with Catastor’s effect. He Set 2 cards to his back row before ending his turn.

Zheng drew Mirror Force and Set it.

Fraser activated a second copy of Reckless Greed during his Main Phase 1 to draw 2 more cards and then Normal Summoned Tour Guide From the Underworld. He activated its effect to Special Summon another Tour Guide from his Deck in Defense Position. Next, he combined both Tour Guides to Xyz Summon Wind-Up Zenmaines in Attack Position. He attacked directly with Catastor, and Zheng activated Mirror Force! Catastor was destroyed, and Zenmaines protected itself by giving up an Xyz Material. Zenmaines attacked directly, dropping Zheng down to 4800 Life Points. In Fraser’s End Phase, he destroyed Divine Wind of Mist Valley with Zenmaines’s effect.

Zheng drew Tempest, Dragon Ruler of Storms next turn! He banished 2 copies of Harpie Queen from his Graveyard to Special Summon Tempest and then attacked Zenmaines with it. Fraser dropped down to 4700 Life Points and Zenmaines gave up an Xyz Material to protect itself. In his End Phase, Fraser destroyed Zheng’s Tempest with Zenmaines’s effect.

Fraser activated Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Zheng’s face-down Hysteric Sign. Next, he banished Tour Guide From the Underworld and The Fabled Chawa to Special Summon Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning, and then Normal Summoned Fabled Kushano. Direct attacks from Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning, Wind-Up Zenmaines, and Fabled Kushano finished Zheng off!

Black Luster Soldier Leads the Way

Ian Fraser starts off strong with Obedience Schooled to win the first Duel! Mike Zheng will be going first in Duel 2!

Duel Two

Zheng started off Duel 2 with Light-Imprisoning Mirror, Mirror Force, Harpie Dancer, Harpie Channeler, Torrential Tribute, and Terraforming.

Zheng's Duel 2 Opening Hand

He activated Terraforming to add Divine Wind of Mist Valley from his Deck to his hand and activated it. He Summoned Harpie Dancer next and used its effect to return it to his hand and Summon it back to the field. He Special Summoned Harpie Queen from his Deck with the effect of Divine Wind of Mist Valley and Set Light-Imprisoning Mirror, Mirror Force, and Torrential Tribute to his back row. Finally, he combined his 2 Harpies to Xyz Summon Maestroke the Symphony Djinn in Defense Position.

Fraser activated Upstart Goblin to draw a card by giving Zheng 1000 Life Points. Next, he activated Obedience Schooled! He Special Summoned The Fabled Nozoochee, The Fabled Chawa, and The Fabled Cerburrel from his Deck, and Zheng flipped Torrential Tribute to wipe them all out! He protected his Maestroke by giving up an Xyz Material. Fraser Set a card to each zone before ending his turn.

Ian Fraser

Zheng drew Hysteric Party and Set it.

Fraser Normal Summoned Tour Guide From the Underworld and activated its effect to Special Summon another Tour Guide from his Deck in Defense Position. He discarded Fabled Kushano to Special Summon The Fabled Chawa and then Tuned it with Tour Guide to Synchro Summon The Fabled Unicore. Zheng tried to flip Light-Imprisoning Mirror; but Fraser’s Unicore negated and destroyed it, since both players had exactly 1 card in their hands!

Zheng drew Harpie’s Pet Dragon next turn. He detached an Xyz Material from Maestroke to try to put The Fabled Unicore face-down; but Fraser discarded a card and negated Maestroke’s effect with Divine Wrath, destroying Maestroke. Zheng flipped Hysteric Party next! He discarded Harpie Channeler to Special Summon Harpie Channeler, Harpie Dancer, Harpie Lady 1, and Harpie Queen from his Graveyard! He combined his Harpie Channeler with Harpie Queen to Xyz Summon Lightning Chidori, and combined Harpie Lady 1 with Harpie Dancer to Xyz Summon Ice Beast Zerofyne. Chidori’s effect cleared Fraser’s field of everything except his Defense Position Tour Guide. Chidori attacked and destroyed the Tour Guide, and then Zerofyne attacked Fraser directly.

Fraser had no cards in his hand or on his field, and topdecked Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning! He banished Tour Guide From the Underworld and Ryko from his Graveyard to Special Summon it and attacked Zerofyne; but Zheng flipped Mirror Force and Fraser instantly conceded!

A huge play with Hysteric Party brings Mike Zheng a quick victory in Duel 2! Ian Fraser will be going first in the final Duel of the Match!

Fraser started off Duel 3 by once again activating Obedience Schooled! He Special Summoned The Fabled Cerburrel, The Fabled Nozoochee, and Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter from his Deck in Defense Position. He Normal Summoned The Fabled Cerburrel next, and Tuned Cerburrel with Ryko to Synchro Summon The Fabled Unicore. Next, he combined Nozoochee with his other Cerburrel to Xyz Summon Number 64: Ronin Raccoon Sandayu, and detached an Xyz Material to Special Summon a 2300 ATK Token. He Set 2 cards to his back row before ending his turn.

Zheng opened up Duel 3 with Solemn Warning, Elegant Egotist, Macro Cosmos, Harpie Dancer, Summoner Monk, and Divine Wrath. He Summoned Harpie Dancer and activated Elegant Egotist to Special Summon Harpie Lady 1 from his Deck. He combined Harpie Lady 1 with Harpie Dancer to Xyz Summon Ice Beast Zerofyne and detached an Xyz Material from it to negate the effects of all face-up cards. Zerofyne’s ATK rose to 2900, and Zheng attacked and destroyed The Fabled Unicore with Zerofyne. Zheng Set all 3 of his Traps to his back row before ending his turn, and Fraser flipped Royal Decree in his End Phase!

Fraser ended his turn without making a play, unable to destroy Zerofyne.

Zheng drew Harpie’s Hunting Ground next turn. He activated Zerofyne’s effect and then attacked Number 64: Ronin Raccoon Sandayu to destroy it.

Fraser once again passed without making a play.

Zheng activated Harpie’s Hunting Ground and then Summoned Harpie’s Channeler. He tried to use his Harpie’s Hunting Ground to destroy Royal Decree, but lost out to Fraser’s Mystical Space Typhoon destroying the Hunting Ground. Zheng passed his turn.

Fraser Summoned The Fabled Cerburrel and then discarded Fabled Grimro to add The Fabled Ganashia from his Deck to his hand. He activated Instant Fusion next, paying 1000 Life Points to Special Summon Flame Ghost from his Extra Deck in Defense Position. He Tuned Flame Ghost with Cerberrul to Synchro Summon Ally of Justice Catastor. He attacked Harpie Channeler with his Token to destroy it, and then attacked Zerofyne with Catastor to destroy it with Catastor’s effect.

Zheng drew Harpie’s Pet Dragon next turn and passed.
