Round 10 Feature Match: Joseph Guyton versus David Gancedo

February 2nd, 2014

Welcome to Day 2 of YCS Atlanta! There are only two more rounds until the cutoff for Top 32. We featured David Gancedo’s Fire Fists yesterday, and he’s still got a strong record heading into Round 10. He’s up against Joseph Guyton, who’s one of the few Noble Knight Duelist left in the tournament.

Duel 1

Guyton began with Noble Knight Gawayn, and equipped him with Gwenhwyfar, Queen of Noble Arms. He Set three back row cards.

Gancedo started Day 2 with Fire Formation – Tensen, Solemn Warning, Pot of Duality, 2 Upstart Goblin, and Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Bear. He drew Fire Formation – Tenken and Fire Formation – Tenki with his Upstart Goblins, then used Pot of Duality to reveal Mystical Space Typhoon, Bottomless Trap Hole, and Forbidden Lance. He took Lance. He Tenki let him search out Coach Soldier Wolfbark, then he followed that with Bear. He Set Tensen, Tenken, and Warning.

Guyton attacked Bear with Gawayn, and Gancedo flipped Tensen, but Guyton’s Forbidden Lance weakened Bear and left it unaffected by the Fire Formations. In Main Phase 2, Guyton Set two more back row cards.

Gancedo drew Brotherhood of the Fire Fist – Dragon and Normal Summoned it. He had Dragon trade in Tenki and Tensen to revive Bear, and Guyton flipped Torrential Tribute. Gancedo flipped Tenken on Dragon, then Chained Forbidden Lance from his hand on Bear! Gawayn survived with Gwenhwyfar’s help, so Torrential Tribute destroyed no monsters! Bear sent Tenken to the Graveyard to destroy Gawayn. When Gancedo attacked, Guyton tried to revive Gawayn with Call of the Haunted, but Gancedo negated that with Solemn Warning. Bear struck directly to bring Fire Formation – Gyokkou to the field, then Dragon attacked into Mirror Force. In Main Phase 2, Gyokkou locked down the last face-down card.

Guyton passed.

Sir Guyton

Gancedo drew Compulsory Evacuation Device. He attacked with Bear to get Tenki, which got him another Bear. He Set Compulsory Evacuation Device.

Guyton passed again.

Gancedo drew Brotherhood of the Fire Fist – Gorilla. He had 4600 Life Points, while Guyton was sitting on 7500 Life Points thanks to those Upstart Goblins. He played Gorilla and attacked directly with both monsters, with Bear getting Gyokkou to the field. In Main Phase 2 he Xyz Summoned Bujintei Kagutsuchi, sending five spells and traps to the Graveyard.

Guyton Normal Summoned Noble Knight Medraut, but it was sent away by Compulsory Evacuation Device! Next turn, Gancedo was able to play another Bear and finish the Duel!

Guyton had trouble getting any monsters until the end, and Gancedo is able to use his extensive amount of Trap Cards to control the Duel. Gancedo had to Side Deck on the fly, because he hadn’t actually expected all that many Noble Knight opponents.

Duel 2

Guyton began the second Duel with Noble Knight Medraut. He equipped it with Noble Arms – Caliburn, and Gancedo negated Medraut with Effect Veiler. Guyton gained 500 Life Points with Caliburn, and Set a back row card.

Gancedo’s opening hand was Forbidden Lance, a second Effect Veiler, Mystical Space Typhoon, Light-Imprisoning Mirror , and Brotherhood of the Fire Fist – Dragon. He destroyed Pot of Duality with Mystical Space Typhoon, then used Lance to weaken Medraut and destroy it in battle with Dragon. He Set Light-Imprisoning Mirror to finish.

Guyton used Reinforcement of the Army to search out another Medraut, and Summoned it. He equipped Medraut with Noble Arms – Arfeudutyr. He used Arfeudutyr, but Gancedo Chained Light-Imprisoning Mirror. Since Medraut was now a DARK monster, it could still activate despite Light-Imprisoning Mirror! “So this is bad against them…” Gancedo laughed. “Please note that I wasn’t expecting to play Noble Knights.” He hit Medraut with Effect Veiler, and Guyton equipped Medraut with Noble Arms of Destiny.

Gancedo drew Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Bear and Summoned it. He stacked Bear and Dragon for Brotherhood of the Fire Fist – Cardinal, but was unable to activate its effect since he didn’t have any targets in the Graveyard (Though you can target the same cards you detach, you must have legal targets in the Graveyard to activate Cardinal in the first place). He reeled at his mistake, and sent Cardinal to attack Medraut. He dealt 100 damage, but Noble Arms of Destiny kept Medraut safe.

Medraut activated, bringing Noble Knight Borz to the field. Destiny was destroyed and reequipped to Borz, which let Borz activate its own effect. Guyton selected Noble Arms – Gallatin, Noble Arms – Excaliburn, and Gwenhwyfar, Queen of Noble Arms, putting Excaliburn into his hand. Gancedo knew his mistake with Cardinal had cost him, and conceded.

Joseph Guyton evens the score! While Side Decking, the Duelists discussed what would have happened if Gancedo had played a different Xyz Monster instead of Cardinal, such as Evilswarm Exciton Knight. The conclusion was that Guyton’s field was so secure thanks to Noble Arms of Destiny, Gancedo was probably doomed that time either way.

Duel 3

Thunder King Rai-Oh, Bear, Wolfbark, Mystical Space Typhoon, Tensen, and Dust Tornado. He played Rai-Oh and Set his spells and traps.

Guyton Set three back row as well. In the End Phase, Gancedo used Typhoon and Tornado to hit Royal Decree and Skill Drain.

Gancedo drew Black Horn of Heaven and Set it, and attacked with Rai-Oh.

Guyton passed.

Gancedo drew another Black Horn of Heaven and Set it as well. Rai-Oh hit directly again.

Guyton Normal Summoned Noble Knight Drystan, and equipped him with Noble Arms – Arfeudutyr. Drystan destroyed Rai-Oh with his effect, then Arfeudutyr blew away a Black Horn of Heaven.

Gancedo drew Tenki, but lost it to Mystical Space Typhoon. He played Bear, then used Tensen on it. Guyton negated Bear with Effect Veiler, but Bear simply attacked over Drystan. Guyton had 2900 Life Points left.

Guyton played Noble Knight Gwalchavad and equipped him with Gwenhwyfar, Queen of Noble Arms and Noble Arms – Excaliburn, then retrieved Drystan with Gwalchavad’s effect – Excaliburn was destroyed.

Gancedo is pleased with Feature Matches

Gancedo drew Fiendish Chain. He while on how to best get over Gwalchavad without simply losing to a Drystan + Gwenhwyfar combo next turn. He played Wolfbark and attacked over Gwalchavad with Bear, getting Fire Formation – Gyokkou. Wolfbark attacked directly, then he Xyz Summoned Brotherhood of the Fire Fist – Tiger King. That gave him Fire Formation – Tenki, which searched out another Wolfbark. He Set Fiendish Chain. Guyton played Drystan and equipped him with Gwenhwyfar, but when Gancedo flipped Fiendish Chain, Guyton offered the handshake!

David Gancedo is your winner, with Fire Fists!
