Round 9 Feature Match: Jonathon Nagel versus David Gancedo
Denver and Miami
Denver, CO’s Jonny Nagel is well known in the YCS circuit, always playing creative Decks. Today, he’s one of the last Gravekeeper Duelists with a shot at making Day 2. He’s got to take down David Gancedo’s Fire Fists if he wants a good shot at the Top 32. David made the trip here from Miami, FL, and is using a few cards that most Fire Fist Duelists have eschewed today, such as Brotherhood of the Fire Fist – Dragon and Fire Formation – Tenken.
Duel 1
Gancedo began with Fire Formation – Tenki, adding Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Bear to his hand. He played it and backed it with three cards in his back row.
Nagel had Bottomless Trap Hole, Trap Hole, 2 Gravekeeper’s Spy, Mystical Space Typhoon, and Gravekeeper’s Descendant. He Set a Spy, Typhoon, and the Trap Hole cards.
Gancedo played Fire Formation – Tensen, then had Bear pitch Tenki to destroy Spy. Bear struck directly, putting Fire Formation – Gyokkou on the field. In Main Phase 2 Gancedo activated it, locking down Mystical Space Typhoon.
Nagel drew another Mystical Space Typhoon. He Set Spy and Typhoon.
Gancedo used Upstart Goblin for a new card, then Pot of Duality picked up Compulsory Evacuation Device, Forbidden Lance, and Brotherhood of the Fire Fist – Dragon – he added Forbidden Lance to his hand. Nagel then decided to nail Gyokkou with Mystical Space Typhoon, then used his other Typhoon on Tensen. Gancedo flipped yet another Tensen though, and Bear used it to destroy Spy. Bear attacked directly, getting Gyokkou, and it targeted Trap Hole.
Nagel drew Rite of Spirit. He Set it and passed, and Gancedo flipped Fire Formation – Tenken.
Gancedo attacked with Bear, and Nagel blocked with Rite of Spirit, reviving Spy. In Main Phase 2 Bear pitched Tenken to destroy Spy, and Gancedo Set two back row cards.
Nagel drew Pot of Duality, revealing Mystical Space Typhoon and two Gravekeeper’s Stele. None of them would help him against that Bear, and he conceded!
David Gancedo plays a single monster and rides it all the way to victory! Nagel simply could not get rid of that Bear, and it picked his field apart, little by little. The Duelists went for their Side Decks, and the next Duel began shortly after.
Duel 2
Nagel began this time with Book of Moon, Pot of Duality, Necrovalley, Dark Hole, Gravekeeper’s Descendant, and Dust Tornado. Pot of Duality picked up Pot of Duality, Necrovalley, and Mystical Space Typhoon. He took the Typhoon, which should help tremendously in this matchup. He Summoned Descendant, played Necrovalley, then Set the rest of his hand.
“Your back row is scary, dude,” Gancedo said. He played Fire Formation – Tenki, but lost it to Mystical Space Typhoon. He’d expected the Typhoon, because he activated Closed Forest next, but Nagel had the Dust Tornado to stop it. He Set two back row cards.
Nagel drew and Summoned Gravekeeper’s Recruiter, and lost it to Bottomless Trap Hole. Descendant struck directly.
Gancedo played Fire Formation – Tenki to search out Bear, playing it into Nagel’s Book of Moon. Gancedo Set a back row card.
Nagel topdecked Pot of Duality, and it let him choose between 2 Gravekeeper’s Stele and Gravekeeper’s Commandant. He took Commandant, then attacked with Descendant. Gancedo used Fiendish Chain to block the attack. In Main Phase 2, he played Commandant, stacking it with Descendant for Evilswarm Exciton Knight! He activated its effect, wiping the field!
Gancedo played Coach Soldier Wolfbark, which revived Bear. He Xyz Summoned Brotherhood of the Fire Fist – Tiger King, which got Tenki. That got him another Wolfbark. Tiger King negated Exciton Knight and destroyed it in battle.
Nagel drew and Set Rite of Spirit.
Gancedo used Pot of Duality to get Fiendish Chain, then played Fire Formation – Gyokkou to lock down Rite of Spirit. Tiger King hit directly.
Nagel Set Gravekeeper’s Recruiter.
Gancedo played Wolfbark, and grabbed Bear with it. He stacked them for another Tiger King and searched out Gyokkou, Setting it on the field. Tiger King destroyed Recruiter, giving Nagel a Gravekeeper’s Commandant into his hand. The other Tiger King struck directly.
Nagel drew Gravekeeper’s Spy. He discarded Commandant to get Necrovalley, played it, then Set Spy. It wasn’t enough, because Gancedo had another Bear to destroy Spy!
David Gancedo overcomes the might of Necrovalley, thanks to Fire Fists!
