Souvick Kar from Atlanta, Georgia went 9-2 this weekend with his Evilswarm Deck featuring Evilswarm Exciton Knight in his Extra Deck. David Gancedo from Miami, Florida finished the Swiss Rounds with a 10-1 record using Fire Fists. Unlike many Fire Fist competitors in attendance this weekend, Gancedo uses several Fire Formation Trap Cards and Brotherhood of the Fire Fist – Dragon in his Deck. One of these Duelists will advance to the Top 16, where they will participate in the first-ever Top 16 YCS Draft!

 

Duel One

 

Kar opened up Duel 1 with 2 Evilswarm Castors, Evilswarm Thunderbird, Mirror Force, Infestation Infection, and Solemn Warning. He Summoned Castor and used its effect to Normal Summon Evilswarm Thunderbird. Next, he combined his 2 Evilswarm monsters to Xyz Summon Evilswarm Ophion. He detached Thunderbird from Ophion to activate its effect, but lost out to Gancedo’s Effect Veiler. Kar Set 3 cards to his back row before ending his turn.

 

Gancedo Set 4 cards to his back row and then tried to Summon Brotherhood of the Fire Fist – Dragon; but Kar flipped Solemn Warning and paid 2000 Life Points to negate its Summon.

 

 

Kar drew Effect Veiler next turn. He detached an Xyz Material from Ophion to activate its effect, but Gancedo flipped Fiendish Chain to negate Ophion’s effect and prevent it from attacking. Next, Kar flipped Infestation Infection. He sent Evilswarm Castor from his hand to his Deck, and Gancedo Chained Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Infestation Infection and stop Kar from getting an Evilswarm monster from his Deck.

 

Gancedo drew a card and Set it to his back row.

 

Kar drew Rescue Rabbit and passed.

 

Gancedo drew a card and Set it to his back row.

 

Kar drew Book of Moon and Set it. Gancedo destroyed it with Mystical Space Typhoon in the End Phase.

 

Gancedo drew a card and passed.

 

Kar drew Evilswarm Kerykeion and tried to Summon it; but Gancedo paid 2000 Life Points to negate its Summon with Solemn Warning.

 

Gancedo Summoned Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Bear. He flipped Fire Formation – Tenken, targeting Bear. He skipped his Battle Phase and then used his Bear’s effect in Main Phase 2. He sent Tenken to the Graveyard and destroyed Ophion with Bear’s effect.

 

Kar drew Evilswarm Castor next turn. He Summoned Castor but lost it to Gancedo’s Bottomless Trap Hole.

 

Gancedo drew Fire Formation – Gyokkou and activated it to pin down Kar’s back row. Kar used Effect Veiler on Bear to negate Bear’s effect and then Bear attacked him directly.

 

Kar drew Bottomless Trap Hole next turn. He Summoned Rescue Rabbit and banished it to Special Summon 2 Evilswarm Heliotropes from his Deck. He combined both Heliotropes to Xyz Summon Number 50: Blackship of Corn, and Gancedo flipped Compulsory Evacuation Device to return it to the Extra Deck. Kar Set Bottomless Trap Hole before passing.

 

Gancedo attacked with Bear next turn and used Bear’s effect to Set Fire Formation – Tenki from his Deck. He flipped Tenki and used its effect to add Coach Soldier Wolfbark from his Deck to his hand and then passed his turn.

 

Kar drew a card and passed without making a play.

 

Gancedo activated another copy of Fire Formation – Gyokkou to pin down Kar’s Bottomless Trap Hole and then Summoned Coach Soldier Wolfbark. Kar instantly conceded, unable to survive through the end of the turn.

Duel Two

 

Kar opened up Duel 2 with Evilswarm Castor, Evilswarm Thunderbird, Evilswarm Kerykeion, Fiendish Chain, Dust Tornado, and Mystical Space Typhoon. He Summoned Castor and then used its effect to Summon Thunderbird. Next, he combined both Evilswarm monsters to Xyz Summon Ophion. He detached an Xyz Material to activate its effect, but lost out to Effect Veiler, exactly like in Duel 1. Kar Set 3 cards to his back row before ending his turn.

 

 

Gancedo activated Upstart Goblin to give Kar 1000 Life Points and draw a card, and then activated Fire Formation – Tensu. He used its extra Summon to Summon Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Bear and then activated Fire Formation – Tenki; but Kar Chained Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy it. Gancedo sent Tensu to the Graveyard to use Bear’s effect next, trying to destroy Ophion, and Kar Chained Fiendish Chain to negate its effect. Gancedo Set Black Horn of Heaven before passing, and lost it to Mystical Space Typhoon in the End Phase.

 

Kar detached an Xyz Material from Ophion to add Infestation Pandemic from his Deck to his hand. Next, he Summoned Evilswarm Kerykeion. He activated its effect by banishing Evilswarm Thunderbird from his Graveyard but lost out on its effect to Gancedo’s Effect Veiler. Ophion attacked and destroyed Bear, and then Evilswarm Kerykeion attacked directly, dropping Gancedo down to 5450 Life Points.

 

Gancedo drew a card and Set it to his back row.

 

Kar drew Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning. He Summoned Evilswarm Heliotrope and then attacked directly with all 3 of his monsters, wiping out Gancedo’s remaining remaining Life Points.

 

 

Souvick Kar gets a strong start in Duel 2 to take a quick victory and push the Match to a final Duel! David Gancedo will be going first in Duel 3!

 

Duel Three

 

Gancedo started off Duel 3 by Summoning Brotherhood of the Fire Fist – Dragon and activating Fire Formation – Tenki. He added Bear to his hand with Tenki’s effect and Set Fire Formation – Tensen from his Deck with Dragon’s effect. Next, he activated Pot of Duality to reveal Forbidden Lance, Fire Formation – Tensu, and Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Bear from the top of his Deck. He added Forbidden Lance to his hand and shuffled the other 2 cards back into his Deck. Gancedo Set a card to his back row before passing.

 

Kar opened up Duel 3 with Evilswarm Mandragora, Effect Veiler, Evilswarm Castor, Evilswarm Heliotrope, Mystical Space Typhoon, and Evilswarm Thunderbird. He Special Summoned Evilswarm Mandragora and then Normal Summoned Evilswarm Castor. Next, he combined his 2 monsters to Xyz Summon Evilswarm Exciton Knight! When it was Summoned, Gancedo activated Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy his own Tenki. Next, Kar Normal Summoned Evilswarm Heliotrope. He attacked Brotherhood of the Fire Fist – Dragon with Heliotrope and Gancedo flipped Tensen in the Damage Step to increase his monster’s ATK and win the battle. In Main Phase 2, Kar detached an Xyz Material from Exciton Knight to clear the field. He Set Mystical Space Typhoon before passing.

 

Gancedo activated Tensu and used its Summon to Normal Summon Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Bear. He sent Tensu to the Graveyard to activate Bear’s effect, but lost out to Effect Veiler. Next, he Normal Summoned another Bear. He combined both Bears to Xyz Summon Brotherhood of the Fire Fist – Tiger King and used Tiger King’s effect to Set Gyokkou from his Deck. He activated it to pin down Kar’s Mystical Space Typhoon and then used Tiger King’s effect to negate Exciton Knight’s effect. He attacked Exciton Knight with Tiger King to destroy it in battle and then ended his turn.

 

Kar drew Torrential Tribute and Set it.

 

Gancedo attacked directly with Tiger King to drop Kar down to 4450 Life Points. He Set a card to his back row before passing.

 

Kar drew Evilswarm Heliotrope and Set it.

 

Gancedo attacked and destroyed the face-down Heliotrope. He Set a back row before passing.

 

Kar drew Infestation Pandemic and passed.

 

Gancedo attacked directly with Tiger King.

 

Kar drew another Heliotrope and Set it.

 

Gancedo Summoned Brotherhood of the Fire Fist – Gorilla. Kar flipped Torrential Tribute, and Gancedo Chained 2 copies of Forbidden Lance to protect both of his monsters. Kar immediately offered the handshake, knowing Gancedo’s 2 monsters would finish him off.
