Top 16 Feature Match: Marc Carisse Versus James Valentino
Marc Carisse from Toronto, Canada piloted a Geargia Deck to a 9-2 finish in the Swiss Rounds this weekend. James Valentino from Houston, Texas ran an Infernity Deck with Archfiend Heiress and Archfiend Palabyrinth in it, and finished the Swiss Rounds with a 10-1 record. Duel One
Valentino started off Duel 1 by Setting 2 cards to his back row and Setting a monster.
Carisse opened up Duel 1 with Call of the Haunted, Cloning, Treeborn Frog, That Wacky Alchemy, The Golden Apples, and Ancient Gear Golem.
He Set That Wacky Alchemy, Cloning, and Treeborn Frog.
Valentino Summoned Mecha Phanttom Beast Tetherwolf and used its effect to Special Summon a Mecha Phantom Beast Token in Defense Position. He attacked and destroyed Varisse’s face-down Treeborn Frog with Tetherwolf and then ended his turn.
Carisse drew Truckroid next turn. He Set The Golden Apples and then passed his turn.
Valentino Flip Summoned Needle Sunfish and then Normal Summoned Mataza the Zapper. Carisse flipped Cloning to Special Summon a Clone Token with 1300 DEF in Defense Position. Needle Sunfish attacked and destroyed the Clone Token and then Mataza attacked directly twice. Finally, Mecha Phantom Beast Tetherwolf attacked directly, dropping down to 3700 Life Points. Carisse flipped The Golden Apples to Special Summon a Token with 1700 DEF and gain 1700 Life Points, bringing him up to 5400 Life Points. Valentino Set a card to his back row before passing.
Carisse drew Twin-Headed Behemoth next turn. He Summoned Twin-Headed Behemoth and then switched his Malus Token created by The Golden Apples into Attack Position. He attacked Valentino’s Mecha Phantom Beast Token with his Malus Token to destroy it, and then attacked and destroyed Mataza the Zapper with Twin-Headed Behemoth.
Valentino attacked and destroyed Twin-Headed Behemoth with Tetherwolf and switched Needle Sunfish into Defense Position. He Set a monster before passing.
Carisse drew Tiki Curse and Special Summoned Twin-Headed Behemoth back to his field on his next turn. He attacked Needle Sunfish with his Token, destroying the Sunfish, and then Tributed his Token and his Twin-Headed Behemoth to Summon Ancient Gear Golem! Carisse Set Call of the Haunted and Tiki Curse before ending his turn.
Valentino Summoned Card Guard and gave it a Guard Counter. Next, he Flip Summoned Golem Sentry and returned Ancient Gear Golem to Carisse’s hand. Valentino declared a direct attack with Golem Sentry, and Carisse flipped Tiki Curse. Valentino attacked Tiki Curse with Tetherwolf and activated Shrink in the Damage Step to weaken it and destroy it in battle. Next, Card Guard attacked directly, dropping Valentino down to 2500 Life Points. Valentino put his Golem Sentry face-down and passed.
Carisse drew Pot of Greed! He activated it to draw Nordic Relic Brisingamen and Deep Sweeper. He Set a monster and passed.
Valentino Summoned Bazoo the Soul-Eater and Carisse conceded, overwhelmed by Valentino’s field.

Duel Two
Carisse started off Duel 2 with Golem Sentry, Dark Resonator, Heroic Challenger – Night Watchman, Truckroid, Cloning, and The Golden Apples. He Set Golem Sentry and Cloning.
Valentino Summoned Blizzard Dragon, and Carisse flipped Cloning to Summon a Clone Token in Attack Position with 1800 ATK! He attacked Carisse’s face-down Golem Sentry, flipping it face-up. Valentino Set 2 cards to his back row and activated Blizzard Dragon’s effect targeting Carisse’s Clone Token before ending his turn.
Carisse drew Dododo Bot and Set it. He flipped his Golem Sentry face-down and then ended his turn.
Valentino Summoned Vylon Stella and attacked Carisse’s Clone Token. He lost 400 Life Points in the battle, and then paid 500 Life Points to Equip Vylon to Blizzard Dragon. Next, he activated Swords of Concealing Light to keep down Carisse’s face-down monsters.
Carisse Set Butterspy Protection and a monster.
Valentino Summoned Berserk Gorilla and Carisse flipped Butterspy Protection to switch Berserk Gorilla into Defense Position, destroying it with the Gorilla’s own effect. Next, he attacked Carisse’s face-down Golem Sentry, flipping it up.
Carisse drew Pot of Greed and activated it to draw 2 cards. He attacked Blizzard Dragon with his Token, destroying both monsters. Next, he Set his Golem Sentry face-down with its effect and Set a fourth monster to the field.
Valentino Summoned Bazoo the Soul-Eater and banished Blizzard Dragon and Vylon Stella to increase its ATK to 2200. He attacked and destroyed Carisse’s face-down Golem Sentry.
Carisse Flip Summoned Dododo Bot. Valentino flipped Adhesion Trap Hole to halve its ATK. Carisse activated Riryoku next! He halved Bazoo’s ATK and gave it to Dododo Bot. Dododo Bot attacked and destroyed Bazoo, dropping Valentino down to 6200 Life Points.
But on Valentino’s next turn, Valentino conceded, seeing no way to take down Carisse’s monsters.

Duel Three
Valentino started off Duel 3 by Setting a card to his back row.
Carisse opened up Duel 3 with Twin-Headed Behemoth, Ape Fighter, Reptilianne Rage, Miniaturize, and Nordic Relic Brisingamen, and Dark Resonator.
He Summoned Twin-Headed Behemoth and then activated Reptilianne Rage to increase the ATK of Twin-Headed Behemoth. He tried to attack directly, but Valentino flipped Metal Reflect Slime to Special Summon it in Defense Position with 3000 Defense Position! Carisse Set Miniaturize and Nordic Relic Brisingamen before passing his turn.
Valentino Summoned Tehterwolf and Special Summoned a Mecha Phantom Beast Token to the field in Defense Position.
Carisse attacked and destroyed the Token with his Twin-Headed Behemoth and then Summoned Tardy Orc in Main Phase 2.
Valentino Summoned Skull Kraken next turn. He used its effect to destroy Reptilianne Rage, and Carisse weakened Tetherwolf by 800 ATK with the effect of his Reptilianne Rage. Valentino switched his Kraken into Defense Position with its effect, and then switched Tetherwolf into Defense Position.
Carisse attacked and destroyed Skull Kraken and Tetherwolf with Twin-Headed Behemoth and Tardy Orc. He Set a monster before passing.
Valentino Summoned Alexandrite Dragon and attacked Twin-Headed Behemoth to destroy it.
Carisse drew Majestic Mech – Goryu and Special Summoned Twin-Headed Behemoth from his Graveyard to his field. He attacked Alexandrite Dragon with Tardy Orc to destroy it and then ended his turn.
Valentino Summoned Bazoo the Soul-Eater! He banished all 3 monsters from his Graveyard to increase its ATK to 2500 and then attacked Tardy Orc to try to destroy it; but Carisse flipped Miniaturize to decrease Bazoo’s ATK by 1000! Valentino lost 600 Life Points and his Bazoo was destroyed.

Valentino Summoned Mecha Phantom Beast Blackfalcon. He attacked Twin-Headed Behemoth with Blackfalcon, and Valentino Special Summoned a Mecha Phantom Beast Token in Defense Position. Blackfalcon destroyed the Twin-Headed Behemoth in battle. Valentino Set 2 cards to his back row before ending his turn.
Carisse drew Ancient Gear Golem on his next turn. He Summoned Ape Fighter and then Flip Summoned Dark Resonator. Ape Fighter attacked and destroyed the Mecha Phantom Beast Token and then Dark Resonator attacked and destroyed Blackfalcon. Ape Fighter gained 300 ATK for destroying the Token in battle.
Valentino Set a monster and passed his turn.
Carisse drew Fiend’s Sanctuary. He activated it to Special Summon a Metal Fiend Token in Attack Position and then attacked Valentino’s face-down A/D Changer with Ape Fighter to destroy it. Ape Fighter gained another 300 ATK for winning the battle. Carisse Tributed his Metal Fiend Token to Summon The Tricky in Main Phase 2 and then ended his turn.
Valentino passed his turn without making a play.
Carisse drew Truckroid and then ended his turn.
Valentino Summoned Evilswarm Ketos and Tributed it to destroy Carisse’s face-down Nordic Relic Brisingamen.

Valentino Summoned Berserk Gorilla and attacked over the Ape Fighter that lost all of its bonus ATK as a result of not attacking on previous turns.
Carisse attacked Berserk Gorilla with Tardy Orc to try to destroy it, but Valentino flipped Shrink to weaken Tardy Orc and win the battle. Next, Carisse attacked Berserk Gorilla with The Tricky, destroying both monsters.
Valentino Summoned Blade Knight and Carisse flipped Cloning to Summon a Token with 1600 ATK.
Carisse drew Super Conductor Tyranno next turn! He Tributed his Token and his Treeborn Frog to Summon it and then attacked Metal Reflect Slime to destroy it with its 3300 ATK!
Valentino Summoned Blizzard Dragon and time in the round was called! He used Blizzard Dragon’s effect to freeze Super Conductor Tyranno and then attacked Dark Resonator with Blade Knight and Blizzard Dragon to destroy Dark Resonator.
Carisse drew Pot of Greed next turn and activated it to draw 2 cards! He Tributed Treeborn Frog to Summon Majestic Mech – Goryu and then attacked Blizzard Dragon with Goryu to destroy Blizzard Dragon and drop Valentino down to 5500 Life Points. Carisse Tributed Goryu to activated the effect of his Tyranno in Main Phase 2; but Valentino flipped Breakthrough Skill to negate its effect.
Valentino Set a monster and then switched his Knight into Defense Position.
Carisse drew Drillroid and then passed his turn. It was the final turn in overtime, and Carisse was up 7000 Life Points to 5500 Life Points.
