Dragon Duel Playoff: Cody Rister Versus Steve Zepeda

April 14th, 2014

Steve Zepeda was our winner in yesterday’s Dragon Duel event. He made the trip all the way here from Philadelphia, and has been successful with his Bujin Deck so far. He’s facing off against Cody Rister, a Battlin’ Boxer Duelist from Sacramento! They’re fighting for the title of YCS Las Vegas Dragon Duel Champion!

Duel 1

Zepeda began with Forbidden Lance, Bottomless Trap Hole, Bujin Mikazuchi, Honest, Bujin Regalia – The Sword, and Pot of Duality. He used Pot of Duality to show Bujingi Turtle, Fiendish Chain, and Fire Formation – Tenki. He took Tenki, which in turn let him get Bujin Yamato. He played it out and backed it with Lance, Bottomless Trap Hole, and Bujin Regalia – The Sword. Yamato’s effect searched out Bujingi Hare, then discarded it.

Rister Summoned Battlin’ Boxer Headgeared! It sent Battlin’ Boxer Counterpunch to the Graveyard with its effect. He played Kaiser Colosseum next, and Set three back row cards.

Zepeda drew Bujingi Quilin. He passed his turn, and activated Yamato. Rister Chained Fiendish Chain, and Zepeda Chained Forbidden Lance! Yamato went through, searching out Bujingi Crane and discarding Quilin.

Rister Set one back row card.

Zepeda drew another Yamato. He used Quilin’s effect to destroy Kaiser Colosseum, then played Bujin Mikazuchi. He used Bujin Regalia – The Sword to return Bujingi Quilin to the Graveyard, but couldn’t activate it twice in a turn. He attacked Headgeared, which survived thanks to its effect.

Rister Set another to his back row.

Zepeda drew Dark Hole. He banished his Quilin to destroy Fiendish Chain. Mikazuchi attacked Headgeared, but Yamato’s attack was halted by another Fiendish Chain! In Main Phase 2 Zepeda stacked his monsters for Bujintei Susanowo, and lost it to Black Horn of Heaven! Finally, he Normal Summoned his second Yamato. It searched out Bujingi Turtle, then discarded it.

Rister played a second Headgeared, and it sent another Counterpunch to the Graveyard. He stacked his monsters for Battlin’ Boxer Lead Yoke, and Zepeda used Bottomless Trap Hole. Lead Yoke survived with its effect, increasing its own ATK to 3000! Lead Yoke attacked Yamato. Rister used a Counterpunch to do more damage, but Zepeda’s Honest let him win the battle anyway! Lead Yoke detached its last Xyz Material.

Zepeda drew Bujincarnation. He used Dark Hole, and Rister saved Lead Yoke with Forbidden Lance. Zepeda’s Yamato was still destroyed, so he played Bujincarnation for Yamato and Quilin! He Xyz Summoned Bujintei Susanowo and detached Quilin for its effect, getting Bujingi Crane. He banished Quilin to finally destroy Lead Yoke, and attacked directly.

Rister played his own Dark Hole, but Susanowo was saved by Bujingi Hare. Rister Special Summoned Blaster, Dragon Ruler of Infernos from his hand and passed.

Zepeda drew Tenki, and lost it to Mystical Space Typhoon. He simply attacked though, and Bujingi Crane let him finish off Rister’s Life Points!

Steve Zepeda manages to fight through Battlin’ Boxer Lead Yoke, despite all of the protection Rister had backed it with! It’s not over yet though, because he’d have to win another to be the champion. Rister could still win the next two Duels and steal the win!

Duel 2

Rister placed five cards to his back row.

Zepeda’s hand was Maxx “C”, Yamato, Pot of Duality, Bujingi Hare, Mind Crush, and Tenki. Tenki let him search out Mikazuchi. Pot of Duality was next, showing Mikazuchi, Turtle, and Crane. He took the Crane to his hand. He played Yamato and Set Mind Crush. In the End Phase, Yamato was negated by Rister’s Fiendish Chain.

Rister played Battlin’ Boxer Switchitter.

Zepeda drew a second Yamato. He played Mikazuchi and Xyz Summoned Bujintei Susanowo, and it had its effect negated by Light-Imprisoning Mirror! It attacked Switchitter, and Rister used Forbidden Lance on Susanowo. He’d miscalculated though, and still took 100 damage.

Rister Set a back row card.

Zepeda drew and Set Bujin Regalia – The Sword. Susanowo attacked again, with Rister now at 5400 Life Points.

Rister passed.

Zepeda drew Solemn Warning and Set it. He played Bujingi Hare and attacked with it, then Susanowo.

Rister flipped up Battlin’ Boxer Spirits, and Zepeda negated it with Warning. Rister Set a new card, but when Zepeda attacked, it was all over!

Cody Rister’s Battlin’ Boxers fought valiantly, but Steve Zepeda is your victor! Congratulations Steve, on becoming YCS Las Vegas Dragon Duel Champion!
