Round 4 Feature Match: Piper Terrance Versus Mikhail Martinez

April 13th, 2014

This was awesome.  Both of these competitors were undefeated here in Round 4: born in the Philippines but living here in Las Vegas, Mikhail Martinez is playing Raccoons.  His opponent, Utah’s Piper Terrance, is piloting a Spirit Deck that Side Decks multiple copies of – wait for it – Silent Wobby.  I have no idea what’s going to happen here, but we’re probably gonna see something cool.

Terrance opened up the Match with a hand of Bottomless Trap Hole; Creature Swap; Dimensional Prison; Fenghuang; and two Aratama.  He Summoned Aratama to search out Nikitama, then Set Bottomless and Prison.  He bounced Aratama back to his hand in the End Phase.

Martinez drew a card with Upstart Goblin, then played a second Upstart to put Terrance at 10,000 Life Points.  He Set three cards to his Spell and Trap Card Zone and Set a monster.  This was a big opportunity for Terrance.

Terrance drew a second Creature Swap.  He considered his face-down cards for a moment, then Summoned Nikitama, Tributing it for Fenghuang!  It destroyed all three of Martinez’s backrow cards, though Martinez was able to Chain Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Terrance’s Dimensional Prison.  He lost his own Prison and Burst Rebirth.  Terrance drew for Nikitama’s effect.

“Oooh.  Are you playing Raccoons?”  Terrance took Martinez’s Set Baby Raccoon Tantan with Creature Swap, confirming his suspicions!  He took back his Fenghuang.

Martinez passed his turn.

Terrance Summoned Aratama, searching another Nikitama.  He attacked with Aratama for 800 Battle Damage, dropping Martinez to 7200 Life Points.

Martinez Set a card to his Spell and Trap Card Zone.

Terrance drew Trap Stun and Tributed Tantan for Fenghuang: Martinez Chained his Set Dust Tornado, blowing away Terrance’s Bottomless Trap Hole.  It was a good exchange in terms of card presence, but simplification like that would grind Martinez out of the Duel if he wasn’t careful.  Terrance Set Trap Stun.

Martinez Summoned Baby Raccoon Ponpoko to Set a Tantan from his Deck.

Terrance drew Torrential Tribute and Summoned Nikitama, then Aratama, searching yet another Nikitama.

Terrance overlaid his two Spirits to Xyz Summon Number 101: Silent Honor ARK, then used Rank-Up-Magic Barian’s Force to unleash Number C101: Silent Honor DARK!  He used its effect to steal Martinez’s Baby Raccoon Tantan, taking it as an Xyz Material, and attacked to press 2000 Battle Damage over Baby Raccoon Ponpoko.  He Set Torrential to end.

Martinez Summoned Wind-Up Kitten, and Terrance flipped Torrential Tribute in response!  Honor Dark’s effect let Terrance Special Summon it back from the Graveyard to gain 2800 Life Points!  Terrance now had 12,800 Life Points!  Martinez destroyed Honor DARK with Dark Hole, but he had zero followup and quickly decided it was best to just abandon Game 1 instead of losing more time in the Round.

“That’s rough!” admitted Martinez, with a smile.  He dove for his Side Deck; Terrance did the same.  Play moved to the second Duel.  “I promised my friends I’d side this,” remarked Terrance, bringing in a copy of Garnecia Elefantis.

Well.  This could be interesting.  He also sided in two copies of Silent Wobby.

Martinez opened the second Duel with Obedience Schooled!  He Special Summoned Baby Raccoon Tantan, Baby Raccoon Ponpoko, and Wind-Up Kitten from his Deck!

He overlaid Ponpoko and Tantan to Xyz Summon Number 64: Ronin Raccoon Sandayu, then detached an Xyz Material to Special Summon a Kagemusha Raccoon Token in Defense Position.  He destroyed his Kitten in the End Phase.

Terrance had Mystical Space Typhoon ; Legacy of Yata Garasu; Trap Stun; Mirror Force; Yamato-No-Kami; and Creature Swap.  “Set four and pass.”  Martinez flipped Burst Rebirth in the End Phase, paying 2000 Life Points to Special Summon back Tantan in face-down Defense Position.

Martinez Flip Summoned it next turn, Special Summon Kalantosa, Mystical Beast of the Forest from his Deck.  Kalantosa’s effect destroyed Terrance’s Trap Stun, and he overlaid for another Ronin Raccoon Sandayu!  That got him another Kagemusha Raccoon Token.  He activated Closed Forest to follow up, then shifted everything to Attack Position!  Martinez ran everything into Mirror Force, but the two Sandayu protected eachother to strike for a combined total of 2400 Battle Damage.  Martinez Set Mystical Space Typhoon, losing it to Terrance’s Typhoon in the End Phase.

Terrance drew Rank-Up-Magic Barian’s Force, and flipped Legacy to draw Spirit Reaper.  He Set Barian’s Force and Reaper, losing Barian’s Force to another Mystical Space Typhoon in the End Phase.

Martinez Summoned Junk Synchron to revive Kalantosa!  He Synchro Summoned Armades, Keeper of Boundaries and Special Summoned two more Kagemusha Raccoon Tokens.

Martinez attacked with Armades, and ran aground on Spirit Reaper!  “That’s no good.  Still in Battle Phase…” Martinez flipped Fiendish Chain to soften up Reaper, attacking it with a Sandayu to destroy it, then attacked with the second Sandayu and both Kagemusha Raccoon Tokens to finish the Duel!

Mikhail Martinez hits the opening turn Obedience Schooled and takes control of Game 2 with two Number 64: Ronin Raccoon Sandayus, and a veritable army of Kagemusha Raccoon Tokens!  We were going to Game 3.

Terrance had Rank-Up-Magic Barian’s Force; Creature Swap; Mystical Space Typhoon; Compulsory Evacuation Device; Torrential Tribute; and Rasetsu.  He Set everything but Barian’s Force and Creature Swap.

Martinez Set two cards to his backrow.

Terrance Normal Summoned Spirit Reaper and swung into Mirror Force.

Martinez Set a second Spell or Trap, Dust Tornado, and Terrance destroyed it with Mystical Space Typhoon in the End Phase.

Terrance drew Yaksha, bouncing away Martinez’s backrow Set card, and then Flip Summoned Rasetsu to attack for 1500 Battle Damage, then 1900 more with Yaksha.  He Xyz Summoned Fairy Cheery Girl in Main Phase 2, then detached a Material to draw Nikitama!

Martinez Set two cards to his backrow.  He then Set a monster.

Terrance drew Battle Fader in his Draw Phase, and then drew another Battle Fader with Fairy Cheer Girl’s effect!  With the Cheer Girl’s Xyz Materials gone, Terrance activated Barian’s Force to Rank-Up into CXyz Dark Fairy Cheer Girl!  It attacked, destroying Elephun, and when it did the Dark Fairy Cheer Girl’s effect kicked in to deal 2000 Battle Damage!  Crazy.

Martinez was down to 3000 Life Points.  He flipped two Mystical Space Typhoons to destroy Terrance’s Torrential Tribute and Compulsory Evacuation Device, clearing the way for Obedience Schooled!  He Special Summoned Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter, Baby Raccoon Tantan, and Tree Otter, Normal Summoning Junk Synchron to revive Elephun from his Graveyard.  He stacked Tree Otter and Ryko for Number 64: Ronin Raccoon Sandayu, then detached to Special Summon a Kagemusha Raccoon Token at 2500 ATK.  He activated Closed Forest, and overlaid Tantan and Elephun for another Sandayu.  That got him a 2600 ATK Kagemusha Raccoon Token, quickly boosted to 2900 ATK by Closed Forest.  He sent one Kagemusha Raccoon to attack over Dark Fairy Cheer Girl, letting Terrance draw another card, and when Junk Synchron attacked Terrance dropped a previous Battle Fader to shut down the Battle Phase.  Martinez Set one card to his backrow.

Terrance Set two cards to his Spell and Trap Card Zone.

Martinez attacked with Junk Synchron, then the 2700 ATK Kagemusha Raccoon Token, then the 2900 ATK Kagemusha Raccoon Token!

Terrance was down to 2200 Life Points.  He drew a second Creature Swap and passed after much deliberation.

Martinez attacked into another Battle Fader.

Terrance drew Fenghuang.  He Normal Summoned Nikitama, Tributed it for Fenghuang to destroy Martinez’s Set Burst Rebirth, and drew Dark Dust Spirit  with Nikitama’s effect.  Fenghuang attacked over Junk Synchron and Terrance traded his Spirit for Martinez’s 2700 ATK Token in Main Phase 2.  He Set a third spell or trap, then took back his Fenghuang in the End Phase.  The Duel stood at 2200 Life Points for both Duelists.

Martinez Summoned another Kagemusha Raccoon Token, this one at 3300 ATK!  He had his Tokens in Attack Position and his Sandayus in Defense Position.  He removed his last Material and Special Summoned a Kagemusha Raccoon with a whopping 3700 Attack Points!  He sent the Token with 3700 ATK to attack the Swapped Token, but lost out to Dimensional Prison.  He sent his next largest Token to destroy the pilfered Token instead, dropping Terrance to 1800 Life Points.  The rest of the Raccoons finished the Duel and the Match!

Piper Terrance and his Spirit Deck take the first Duel after a massive Fenghuang play, but a furry nightmare overtakes him in Games 2 and 3, winning Mikhail Martinez the Match.  Those were some huge Kagemusha Raccoons!  Martinez moves on undefeated.
