Round 7 Feature Match: Michael Klasel Versus Chancy Wigglestove

April 13th, 2014

Chancy Wigglestove and Michael Klasel are both veteran YCS Duelists, and both are undefeated sitting at Table 1 here in Round 7.  This is fast becoming the defining matchup of the weekend: Wigglestove is playing Mermails, while Klasel’s running Geargia.  The outcome of this Match may very well set the pace for the rest of the Swiss Rounds.

Klasel got us started with a Set monster, and three Set cards to his Spell and Trap Card Zone.

Wigglestove had a hand of Mermail Abysspike; Fishborg Archer; Mermail Abysslinde; Mermail Abyssteus; Abyss-sphere; and Foolish Burial.  Wigglestove was holding his hand upside down – par for the course for one of the most distinct and unique competitors on the YCS circuit.  He discarded Mermail Abysslinde for Mermail Abyssteus, but when it was Special Summoned Klasel locked its effect with Fiendish Chain.  Wigglestove Normal Summoned Mermail Abysspike, discarded Fishborg Archer, and searched his Deck for Genex UndineFoolish Burial kicked Tidal, Dragon Ruler of Waterfalls to the Graveyard, and Wigglestove Special Summoned it banishing Archer and Abysslinde.  He attacked with Tidal, destroying Klasel’s Set Geargiarmor; Klasel searched his Deck for Geargiaccelerator with Geargiarmor’s effect.  He attacked with Abysspike, then overlaid Abyssteus and Tidal in Main Phase 2 to Xyz Summon Mermail Abyssgaios.  Wigglestove Set Abyss-sphere, but lost it to Klasel’s Mystical Space Typhoon in his End Phase.

Klasel Set a monster, then Set a second Spell or Trap Card.

Wigglestove drew Solemn Warning and attacked with Mermail Abyssgaios, again destroying a Geargiarmor; Klasel got another Geargiaccelerator.  He pressed again with the Abysspike, knocking Klasel down to 4800 Life Points.  He Set Solemn Warning to finish out.

Klasel Summoned Geargiano Mk-II to revive Geargiarmor, then checked his Extra Deck: he shook his head, somewhat perturbed, and then flipped his Geargiarmor face-down: “Your go.”

Wigglestove drew Allure of Darkness!  He Summoned Genex Undine and sent Atlantean Marksman to his Graveyard, and Klasel responded with Torrential Tribute.  Wigglestove searched his Genex Controller, popped Klasel’s Set Seven Tools of the Bandit with Atlantean Marksman, and then drew two cards with Allure: Atlantean Marksman and Dragon Ice!  He banished Controller.  He then banished Undine and Marksman to Special Summon Tidal for a direct attack.

Klasel tried to Normal Summon Geargiano Mk-II, and when Wigglestove blasted him with Solemn Warning he knew it was over!  Wigglestove takes the first Duel.

An aggressive pace sees Wigglestove tear through not one, but three Geargiarmors, as the first Duel ends in a big, favorable chain sequence and a huge topdecked Allure of Darkness for the Game 1 win!  It was over in mere minutes.  Would Wigglestove make such short work of his veteran opponent?

Klasel started the second Duel with Dimensional Fissure, two Set cards to his Spell and Trap Card Zone, and a Set monster.

Wigglestove had two Mystical Space Typhoon; Dragon Ice; Skill Drain; Genex Undine; and Atlantean Heavy Infantry.

He blasted Dimensional Fissure with Typhoon, freeing up his Graveyard for Genex Undine: he sent Atlantean Marksman to his Graveyard to get Genex Controller, then destroyed Klasel’s Set Karakuri Watchdog mdl 313 “Saizan” – clearly a somewhat desperate gambit.  Wigglestove attacked with Undine, then Set Typhoon and Skill Drain.

Klasel Summoned Geargiano Mk-II, and Wigglestove let him Special Summon Geargiano from his hand.  When Klasel overlaid for Soul of Silvermountain, Wigglestove instantly discarded Atlantean Heavy Infantry for Dragon Ice!  He Special Summoned it, but Klasel had Debunk for the Infantry!  When Klasel detached a Material to try and lock down Wigglestove’s Skill Drain, Wigglestove Chained it.  Klasel attacked Undine, destroyed it, and Set his last card to his backrow.  It was Bottomless Trap Hole, and Wigglestove tore through it with a Mystical Space Typhoon in the End Phase.  The Duel stood at 6800 Life Points to 6400.  Klasel was getting steamrolled.

Wigglestove drew Mermail Abyssteus, holding nothing but Controller with Skill Drain and Dragon Ice on the field.  He Normal Summoned Controller to Tune it to Dragon Ice and unleashed Beelze of the Diabolic Dragons!

Wigglestove ran down Soul of Silvermountain.

Klasel drew and Set his topdeck to his backrow.

Wigglestove drew Black Horn of Heaven, attacked with Beelze, and Set the Horn.

Klasel drew and Set another Spell or Trap Card.

Wigglestove attacked; Klasel flipped Geargiagear; and he Special Summoned two Geargiano Mk-II.  Wigglestove attacked to destroy one of them.

Klasel drew and Set a monster, turning his remaining Geargiano Mk-II to Defense Position.

Wigglestove drew, now holding Controller, Abyssteus, and Abysspike.  He Summoned Controller to attack and destroy Geargiano Mk-II, and Beelze attacked to destroy Geargiarmor.

Klasel drew Geargiarsenal and ran it over Controller, Tributing it in Main Phase 2 to Special Summon Geargiaccelerator in Defense Position.
