Top 32 Feature Match: Luis Poma Versus Mark Conley

May 18th, 2014

Here in the Top 32, Bujins were still in competition, placing three competitors into the Top Cut.  Luis Poma is piloting Bujins this round, up against Mark Conley with the breakout strategy of the tournament – Traptrix Hand Artifacts.  Would Bujin Hirume and Bujinki Amaterasu be enough of an edge to get Poma the win, or would Conley’s entire Deck of new hotness beat out the long-successful fan favorite?

Conley opened with a hand of Cardcar D; Compulsory Evacuation Device; Black Horn of Heaven; Pot of Dichotomy; Maxx “C”; and Traptrix Trap Hole Nightmare.  He Summoned Cardcar D, Set his traps and drew two with Cardcar D’s effect: Solemn Warning and Artifact Sanctum.

Poma Summoned Bujingi Quilin and made a direct attack for 1600 Battle Damage.  He Set a card to his Spell and Trap Card Zone, thought a moment, then ended.

Conley drew Fire Hand.  He Set it, then Set Warning and Sanctum.  Poma flipped Mystical Space Typhoon, hit Artifact Sanctum, and his Quilin was destroyed.

Poma Summoned Bujingi Hare and pressed again, destroying Fire Hand.  It destroyed Hare and Conley Special Summon Ice Hand from his Deck.

Conley drew Call of the Haunted.  He Summoned Ice Hand and made a direct attack, then Set Call.

Poma activated Soul Charge!  Conley Chained the effect of Maxx “C”, drawing another Ice Hand.  Poma overlaid for Evilswarm Exciton Knight, Conley negated the Summon with Solemn Warning, and Poma Normal Summoned Bujingi Turtle.  He Set a single Spell or Trap Card.

Conley drew Pot of Duality.  He activated Dichotomy, returning Maxx “C”, Cardcar D, and Fire Hand to his Deck to draw Torrential Tribute and Artifact MoralltachPot of Duality revealed Cardcar D, Mind Control, and Ice Hand from his Deck, and he took Mind Control, shuffling the rest back.  He took Bujingi Turtle with Mind Control, shook his head in confusion at his own move, and handed it back as he ended his turn.  He couldn’t use the pilfered Turtle as an Xyz Material, since he’d activated Pot of Duality.  “Wow.  If I still win this game, I don’t know what just happened.”  Conley wasn’t thrilled about his misplay.

Bujingi Turtle ran over Ice Hand next turn with Forbidden Lance, and since Poma had no backrow Conley couldn’t use its effect.

Conley drew Bottomless Trap Hole, then brought back Ice Hand with Call of the Haunted to run it into Bujingi Turtle.  He targeted and destroyed Poma’s Vanity’s Emptiness, then Special Summoned Fire Hand.  He sent it into Turtle to destroy both monsters, then Special Summoned another Ice Hand for 1400 Battle Damage direct.  He Set Bottomless and ended.

Poma was down to topdecking with two backrow cards Set.  He Set a third and ended.

Conley drew and Summoned Cardcar D, and Poma responded with Mystical Space Typhoon, then Torrential Tribute to play around Ice Hand’s effect.  Conley lost his Bottomless Trap Hole, his Ice Hand, and his Cardcar D, to Poma’s Mystical Space Typhoon and Torrential Tribute.

Poma had one card Set, drew another, and passed entirely.

Conley drew Fire Hand and attacked, dropping Poma to 1600 Life Points.

Poma drew and Set a card to his backrow.

Conley drew Pot of Duality, attacked with Fire Hand, and Poma bounced it away with Compulsory Evacuation Device.  Conley Set a monster.

Poma Set a spell or trap.

Conley drew another Fire Hand, Summoned it, and attacked for game!  Conley immediately began beating himself up over the Mind Control misplay.

A sizable mistake from Mark Conley leads to a wasted Mind Control off Pot of Duality’s Special Summoning restriction, but by then the momentum was already rolling, the damage already done!  Luis Poma seems to get off to a slow start, and a desperate Soul Charge to equalize the first Duel fails in the face of Solemn Warning.  One more win and Conley would be headed to the Top 16!

Poma opened Duel 2 with Pot of Duality, revealing Bujincarnation, Royal Decree, and Bujin Yamato.  He took Yamato and Summoned it, then Set three cards to back it up.  In the End Phase Yamato got him Bujingi Hare, sending it to the Graveyard.

Conley had two Call of the Haunted; Black Horn of Heaven; Artifact Sanctum; Thunder King Rai-Oh; and Mystical Space Typhoon.  He Summoned Thunder King, attacked Yamato, and Poma dropped Honest to win the battle and dish out 1800 Battle Damage.  Conley Set his remaining five cards.  “Go ahead.”  Poma flipped Royal Decree.  Conley had that Mystical Space Typhoon.

Poma attacked with Yamato.  Conley flipped Artifact Sanctum, then Chained Mystical Space Typhoon targeting Royal Decree.  The Chain resolved, Royal Decree was destroyed, and Conley Summoned Artifact Moralltach!  Poma banished Bujingi Hare to keep Bujin Yamato on the field.  He attacked Moralltach, shrunk Moralltach down with Forbidden Lance, and dropped Conley to 5700 Life Points.  In Main Phase 2 Conley flipped Call of the Haunted, targeted Moralltach, and lost the Call to Mystical Space Typhoon.  Still, he flipped the second Call of the Haunted and blew away Yamato with Moralltach’s effect.  Poma fired back with Bujincarnation for Bujingi Hare and Yamato!  He overlaid them for Bujintei Susanowo, and Conley trumped the play with Black Horn of Heaven!

Conley drew Mind Control and made a direct attack with Moralltach.  He Set Mind Control, controlling only Moralltach and the attached Call of the Haunted.

Poma drew to two in hand with a  bare field.  He Summoned Bujin Hirume, banishing Yamato to bring it out.

Conley drew Ice Hand.  He Summoned it, targeted Hirume with Mind Control, and Poma handed it over.  Conley overlaid it with Ice Hand, Xyz Summoned Number 101: Silent Honor ARK and attacked with both monsters.  Poma was down to 1700 Life Points.  Conley still had 5700.

Poma drew to two in hand, again with a blank field, and again had Bujincarnation!  He brought back Bujin Yamato and Bujingi Hare, Xyz Summoned Bujintei Susanowo, and detached Hare to search his Deck for Bujingi Turtle, sending it to the Graveyard.  Susanowo attacked both monsters, destroying Ice Hand and removing an Xyz Material from Number 101: Silent Honor ARK.

Conley drew Artifact Sanctum.  He turned Number 101: Silent Honor ARK to Defense Position and Set Sanctum.

Poma activated Kaiser Colosseum and loaded up another Bujingi Turtle, attacking Number 101 again.

Conley drew Mystical Space Typhoon and Set it.

Poma Summoned a Yamato, sent it to attack Number 101: Silent Honor ARK, and Conley responded with Artifact Sanctum.  Poma Chained the effect of Maxx “C”, Moralltach hit the field, Poma drew, and he banished Hare to protect Susanowo.  Conley blasted away Yamato since Moralltach’s effect doesn’t target at activation, and Poma attacked over Moralltach to destroy it with Susanowo.

Conley drew another Artifact Sanctum and Set it.

Poma Summoned another Bujin Yamato; attacked Honor ARK; and made a direct attack with Susanowo.  He used Yamato to send another Bujingi Hare to his Graveyard.  Conley drew Dimensional Prison and conceded moments later.

A strong opening for Mark Conley, but a pair of Bujincarnations gets Luis Poma back in the game, and the collective protection of multiple Bujingi Hares and Bujingi Turtles is just too much to overcome!  Poma presses the Match to a third and Final Duel.

Conley opened with a hand of Debunk; Ice Hand; two Dimensional Prison; Call of the Haunted; and Artifact Moralltach.  He Set all the Traps but didn’t Set Ice Hand.

Poma Summoned Bujin Yamato, attacked into Dimensional Prison, flopped Forbidden Lance, and got beat by Conley’s second Prison!  Yamato was banished.  He Set two cards to his back row.

Conley drew Mystical Space Typhoon, Summoned Ice Hand, and Poma flipped Mystical Space Typhoon.  He Chained Torrential Tribute, destroying Ice Hand and Debunk.  Conley Set Typhoon.

Poma Summoned Bujin Mikazuchi and attacked.  Conley responded with Mystical Space Typhoon, destroying his own Moralltach to Special Summon it and destroy Mikazuchi!  But Poma had Bujincarnation again!  He brought back Yamato and Mikazuchi in Main Phase 2, used Yamatos’ effect to load up Bujingi Hare in the Graveyard, and that triggered Mikazuchi’s effect to search another Bujincarnation.  Conley flipped Call of the Haunted in the End Phase for Ice Hand.

Conley drew Mind Control again.  He attacked Yamato with Ice Hand, destroying it to try and destroy Poma’s Set card, but he Chained it – Debunk!  Moralltach attacked over Yamato, and Poma saved it by banishing Bujingi Hare.  Conley Set Mystical Space Typhoon.

Poma overlaid Yamato and Mikazuchi to Xyz Summon Bujintei Kagutsuchi, sending Mystical Space Typhoon, Bujin Hirume; Compulsory Evacuation Device; Bujingi Hare; and Bujingi Crane to the Graveyard.  Pom attacked over Moralltach with Kagutsuchi and ended.

Conley drew and Summoned Cardcar D, giving it up to draw Solemn Warning and Ice Hand with its effect.

Poma Special Summoned Bujin Hirume, banishing Bujingi Crane, then Normal Summoned Honest.  He attacked with all three of his monsters to drop Conley to 2100 Life Points, then returned Honest to his hand.

Conley drew Artifact Sanctum.  He shuffled his hand a bit, then Normal Summoned Ice Hand and flipped Mind Control to take Hirume.  He overlaid it with Ice Hand to Xyz Summon Number 101: Silent Honor ARK, detached to take Bujintei Kagutsuchi as an Xyz Material, then made a direct attack!  Poma was down to 5600 Life Points, and Conley Set Warning and Sanctum.

Poma tried to activate Bujincarnation,  Conley dropped to 100 Life Points to activate Solemn Warning, shutting it down.  Still, all Conley had left was Artifact Sanctum, and when he flipped it, he knew Poma had Bujingi Hare to save his monster and Honest to swing over his Number 101: Silent Honor ARK.  With only 100 Life Points left he gave Poma the handshake.
