WCQ – CA: Top 8 Feature Match: Jose Carrillo vs. Erick Villanueva

Jose Carrillo from Guadalajara has made it to the Top 8 with his Artifact/Traptrix/Hands Deck. Now, he’s Dueling against Xalapa’s Erick Villanueva and his Mermail Deck in a Match that will determine which Duelist makes it to the Top 4. The stakes are high, and only one of these Duelists will advance. It’s time to Duel!

Duel One

Carrillo opened up Duel 1 with Call of the Haunted, Traptrix Trap Hole Nightmare, Pot of Duality, Wiretap, Traptrix Dionaea, and Torrential Tribute. He activated Pot of Duality, revealing Wiretap, Dimensional Prison, and Breakthrough Skill from the top of his Deck. He added Breakthrough Skill to his hand and shuffled the other 2 cards back into his Deck. Next, he Set 3 cards to his back row and ended his turn.

Jose Carrillo

Villanueva discarded Atlantean Dragoons and Mermail Abyssleed from his hand to Special Summon Mermail Abyssmegalo. He activated its effect, but Carrillo flipped Traptrix Trap Hole Nightmare to negate it and destroy the Mermail Abyssmegalo. Villanueva used the effect of Atlantean Dragoons to add Atlantean Marksman from his Deck to his hand and then Normal Summoned it. He attacked directly with Marksman, and then Special Summoned Atlantean Heavy Infantry from his Deck in Defense Position with Marksman’s effect.

Carrillo drew Dark Hole next turn. He Summoned Dionaea and attacked Marksman to destroy it. He Set a card to his back row before passing.

Villanueva Summoned Mermail Abysspike and activated its effect by discarding Atlantean Marksman. He added Genex Undine from his Deck to his hand with Abysspike’s effect and then used the effect of Marksman to target Breakthrough Skill for destruction; but Carrillo Chained Breakthrough Skill to negate the effect of Atlantean Heavy Infantry. Next, with exactly 5 WATER monsters in his Graveyard, Villanueva Special Summoned Moulinglacia the Elemental Lord! Carrillo was forced to send Call of the Haunted and Dark Hole from his hand to his Graveyard. Moulinglacia attacked and destroyed Dionaea, and then Abysspike attacked directly, dropping Carrillo down to 3900 Life Points.

Carrillo drew Artifact Sanctum next turn and Set it.

Villanueva attacked with Mermail Abysspike and Carrillo flipped Artifact Sanctum to Special Summon Artifact Moralltach from his Deck in Defense Position. He activated its effect to destroy Moulinglacia, and Carrillo was forced to give up his next turn’s Battle Phase. Abysspike attacked Moralltach, and Villanueva activated Book of Moon to put Moralltach face-down and destroy it in battle. In Main Phase 2, Villanueva Summoned Genex Undine. He sent Tidal, Dragon Ruler of Waterfalls from his Deck to his Graveyard and added Genex Controller from his Deck to his hand.

Carrillo drew Fire Hand next turn and Summoned it to the field. He attacked Abysspike with it. Both monsters were destroyed, and Carrillo activated his Hand’s effect to destroy Atlantean Heavy Infantry and Special Summon Ice Hand from his Deck in Attack Position. Ice Hand attacked and destroyed Genex Undine next.

Villanueva Summoned Genex Controller and then ended his turn.

Carrillo drew Traptrix Dionaea and Summoned it. He activated its effect to try to Special Summon another Dionaea from his Graveyard, but Villanueva discarded D.D. Crow to banish the Dionaea in the Graveyard. Dionaea attacked and destroyed Genex Controller, and then Ice Hand attacked Villanueva directly. Villanueva dropped down to 5800 Life Points. In Main Phase 2, Carrillo combined his 2 monsters to Xyz Summon Number 80: Rhapsody in Berserk in Defense Position. He detached both Xyz Material from it to banish Tidal and Atlantean Dragoons from Villanueva’s Graveyard.

Villanueva banished Genex Undine from his Graveyard to Special Summon Aqua Spirit and attacked Number 80 to destroy it.

Carrillo drew Artifact Sanctum and Set it. In his second Main Phase, Villanueva flipped Abyss-sphere, but Carrillo flipped Wiretap to negate it and shuffle it back into Carrillo’s Deck.

Villanueva attacked with Aqua Spirit, but Carrillo flipped Artifact Sanctum to Special Summon Moralltach from his Deck and destroy Aqua Spirit. He Set a card to his back row before passing.

Carrillo Summoned Cardcar D and Tributed it to activate its effect. Villanueva Chained Abyss-sphere to Special Summon Mermail Abysslinde from his Deck. In the End Phase, Abyss-sphere and Mermail Abysslinde went to the Graveyard and Villanueva Special Summoned Mermail Abyssteus from his Deck in Defense Position with Abysslinde’s effect.

Villanueva Summoned Genex Controller and Tuned it with Abyssteus to Synchro Summon Leo, the Keeper of the Sacred Tree but Carrillo flipped Torrential Tribute to clear the field!

Carrillo drew Traptrix Myrmeleo next turn and Summoned it. He activated its effect to add Bottomless Trap Hole to his hand and then attacked directly with Myrmeleo. Next, he activated Pot of Duality to add Soul Charge to his hand. He Set Book of Moon and Bottomless Trap Hole before ending his turn.

Duel Two

Villanueva discarded Mermail Abyssturge to Special Summon Mermail Abyssteus from his hand and then added Mermail Abysspike to his hand with Mermail Abyssteus’s effect. Next, he Summoned Mermail Abysspike and activated its effect to discard Mermail Abyssmegalo and add Genex Undine from his Deck to his hand. He Set a card to his back row before passing his turn.

Erick Villanueva

Carrillo opened up Duel 2 with Traptrix Myrmeleo, Artifact Sanctum, Maxx “C”, Fire Hand, Torrential Tribute, and Artifact Moralltach. He Summoned Fire Hand and then attacked Mermail Abysspike, destroying both monsters in battle. Fire Hand’s effect activated to destroy Mermail Abyssteus and then he Special Summoned Ice Hand from his Deck in Attack Position and attacked directly with it. Carrillo Set 3 cards to his back row before passing his turn.

Villanueva Summoned Genex Undine and activated its effect by kicking Atlantean Dragoons from his Deck to his Graveyard. Carrillo Chained Artifact Sanctum to Special Summon Moralltach from his Deck. Carrillo added Genex Controller from his Deck to his hand with Undine’s effect and then flipped Breakthrough Skill to negate the effect of Moralltach. Next, he added Moulinglacia the Elemental Lord from his Deck to his hand with the effect of Atlantean Dragoons. Carrillo discarded Maxx “C” from his hand, and then Carrillo Special Summoned Moulinglacia. Carrillo drew a card and then lost both cards in his hands to Moulinglacia’s effect. Moulinglacia attacked and destroyed Ice Hand and then Villanueva ended his turn.

Carrillo drew Fire Hand next turn! He Summoned it to the field and then attacked Moulinglacia. Fire Hand was destroyed in battle, and Carrillo activated its effect to destroy Moulinglacia and Special Summon Ice Hand from his Deck in Attack Position. Ice Hand attacked and destroyed Genex Undine and then Moralltach attacked directly.

Villanueva discarded Atlantean Marksman from his hand to Special Summon Mermail Abyssteus in Defense Position. He activated his Abyssteus’s effect to add Mermail Abysslinde from his Deck to his hand and then activated his Marksman’s effect to destroy Carrillo’s face-down Moralltach. Carrillo Special Summoned Moralltach to the field, and Villanueva banished Breakthrough Skill from his Graveyard to negate its effect. Next, Villanueva Summoned Genex Controller. He activated Mind Control to take control of Ice Hand next, and then Tuned Ice Hand with Genex Controller to Synchro Summon Black Rose Dragon! He combined Black Rose Dragon with Abyssteus to Xyz Summon Mecha Phantom Beast Dracossack in Defense Position and then detached an Xyz Material from it to Special Summon 2 Mecha Phantom Beast Tokens. He Tributed one of them to destroy a Moralltach and then ended his turn.

Carrillo drew Pot of Duality and activated it to reveal Fire Hand, Pot of Duality, and Debunk from the top of his Deck. He added Fire Hand to his hand and Summoned it. Next, he attacked a Mecha Phantom Beast Token to destroy it and ended his turn.

Villanueva detached an Xyz Material from Dracossack to Special Summon 2 Mecha Phantom Beast Tokens to the field and then Summoned Mermail Abysslinde. He switched Dracossack into Attack Position and then attacked Fire Hand with Mermail Abysslinde. Mermail Abysslinde was destroyed by battle, and Villanueva Special Summoned Mermail Abysspike from his Deck in Attack Position. He activated its effect by discarding Atlantean Heavy Infantry and added Mermail Abysslinde from his Deck to his hand. Next, he used the effect of Atlantean Heavy Infantry to destroy Moralltach. Abysspike attacked Fire Hand to destroy both monsters, and then Fire Hand’s effect activated to destroy a Mecha Phantom Beast Token and Special Summon Ice Hand in Defense Position from Carrillo’s Deck. Next, Dracossack attacked and destroyed Ice Hand.

Carrillo drew Dimensional Prison and Set it.

Villanueva Summoned Mermail Abysslinde and attacked directly with Mermail Abysslinde and Dracossack.

Carrillo drew Solemn Warning and Set it.

Villanueva attacked directly with Mermail Abysslinde and Dracossack to end the Duel!

Duel Three

Carrillo started off Duel 3 by Setting 3 cards to his back row.

Villanueva Set a monster and Set 2 cards to his back row.

Carrillo Summoned Traptrix Myrmeleo and activated its effect to add Bottomless Trap Hole from his Deck to his hand. He Set it and then ended his turn.

Villanueva Summoned Genex Controller and then activated Mind Control to take control of Myrmeleo. Carrillo Chained Artifact Sanctum to Special Summon Moralltach from his Deck. Villanueva took control of Myrmeleo and Moralltach destroyed Genex Controller. Next, Carrillo activated Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy his own face-down Moralltach and Special Summon it, and his Moralltach was banished by Bottomless Trap Hole. Carrillo ended his turn, and Myrmeleo returned to Carrillo’s side of the field.

Carrillo Summoned Ice Hand and combined it with Myrmeleo to Xyz Summon Abyss Dweller. He detached an Xyz Material from it to activate its effect and then attacked a face-down Genex Undine with Abyss Dweller to destroy it. Moralltach attacked directly next.

Villanueva Special Summoned Abyssteus next turn by discarding Mermail Abyssleed and activated its effect to add Mermail Abyssturge from his Deck to his hand. He Summoned it to the field, but it was all over on the next turn when Carrillo Summoned Traptrix Dionaea and Villanueva conceded.
