Round 8 Feature Match: Yuhang Li Versus David Green

September 7th, 2014

Once again, we see a Feature Match that pits a Toronto Duelist against a competitor from Montreal!  These two hotbeds of Canadian Dueling talent have been at a clash all day long, and now we’d see Montrealer David Green go up against Toronto’s Yuhang Li.  Both competitors have 6-1 records here in the last Round of Day 1, and they’re two of the few rogue Duelists left in the tournament: Green is playing Madolches and took his one loss in Round 1, while Li is running Fire Kings and was undefeated up until last Round.

Green won the roll and opted to go second.

Li opened the first Duel with a hand of Skill Drain; Fire Hand; Onslaught of the Fire Kings; and two copies of Supply Squad.  He Set Fire Hand, activated Both Supply Squads, and Set his last two cards.

Green destroyed Li’s Set Skill Drain with Mystical Space Typhoon, then activated Madolche Ticket before Summoning Madolche Anjelly.  He activated its effect to Special Summon Madolche Hootcake, banished Anjelly for Hootcake’s effect and brought out Madolche Messengelato.  That let him get Madolche Chateau, which he activated, and he Set two more cards to his back row.

Li drew another Skill Drain and Set it!

Green Set a third card to his Spell and Trap Card Zone, then Set a monster, returning Madolche Hootcake to his Deck in his End Phase and searching Madolche Anjelly with Ticket.

Li drew Maxx “C” and passed.

Green Summoned Anjelly, activated its effect, and Li Chained the effect of Maxx “C”.  He drew Soul Charge as Green Special Summoned his second Hootcake.  He overlaid his two Messengelatos for Madolche Queen Tiaramisu, and Li drew Compulsory Evacuation Device.  Green targeted Messengelato and Anjelly in his Graveyard for Tiaramisu’s ability, and when Li flipped Skill Drain Green flipped Forbidden Lance to force his effect through!  He sent the face-up Skill Drain and face-down Onslaught back to Li’s Deck, and returned his Anjelly and Messengelato to his hand.

Green Special Summoned Messengelato with his Hootcake, giving Li Fire Formation – TenkiMadolchepalooza then unleashed his second Messengelato and an Anjelly.  He overlaid Anjelly and a Messengelato for another Madolche Queen Tiaramisu, this time bumping away Li’s Set Fire Hand and one of his Supply Squads.  He then attacked with one Queen, his second Queen, and Messengelato for game!

An awkward opening for Yuhang Li leads to a passive early game, which David Green smashes with Mystical Space Typhoon and a clutch Forbidden Lance!  A stream of Madolche plays make victory academic for Green in the first Duel.  Li would have his work cut out for him if he was to recover and win the Match.

Li chose for Green to go first, and when he opened with Madolche Anjelly and used its effect, Li dropped Maxx “C” to draw Book of Moon.  Green Set a single card to his Spell and Trap Card Zone.

Li had a hand of Book of Moon; Soul Charge; Fire Hand; Skill Drain; Full House; and Onslaught of the Fire Kings.  He activated Onslaught to Special Summon Fire King High Avatar Garunix from his Deck, Then Set Skill Drain, Full House, and Book.  He destroyed Garunix in his End Phase.

Green flipped Solemn Warning when Li tried to bring the Garunix back next turn, then activated Mystical Space Typhoon from his hand to destroy Li’s Set Full House!  Green Summoned Madolche Magileine, Li flipped Skill Drain, and with Magileine’s effect negated Green overlaid for Number 85: Crazy Box!  Green made a direct attack with Crazy Box for 3000 Battle Damage.

Li ripped a second Fire Hand!  He ran it at Crazy Box to destroy it with Fire Hand’s effect, losing 1400 Life Points and Special Summoning Ice Hand from his Deck.  That Ice Hand punched Green’s Life Points for 1400 damage.

Green Set a monster.

Li drew Mystical Space Typhoon.  He Summoned Fire Hand, attacked with Ice Hand, and flipped Green’s Set Fire Hand.  Green destroyed Li’s Fire Hand with his own Fire Hand’s ability, then brought out Ice Hand in the aftermath.

Green Summoned Madolche Messengelato, turned Ice Hand to Defense Position, and ran over Li’s Ice Hand to deprive it of targets (and thus keep Li from Special Summoning anything with Ice Hand’s effect).  He Set Bottomless Trap Hole but lost it to Li’s Mystical Space Typhoon in the End Phase.

Li had 2400 Life Points left and activated Soul Charge to revive Fire Hand and Garunix in Defense Position, losing 2000 Life Points.

Green activated Chateau to shuffle back monsters from his Graveyard, then sent Messengelato to attack Fire Hand.  Li decided to destroy Green’s Ice Hand, Special Summoning one of his own and forcing Green to abandon his Ice Hand’s ability.

Li drew Mystical Space Typhoon and activated Fire Formation – Tenki, searching his Deck for Fire King Avatar Yaksha.  He Summoned it, blew away Madolche Chateau with Mystical Space Typhoon, then turned Messengelato down with Book of Moon.  Li attacked Messengelato with Ice Hand and two more direct attacks ended the Duel!

Yuhang Li rides Skill Drain to victory, capturing the win in Duel 2 to even the Match score at 1-1!  The victor in the third and final Duel would head into Day 2 with a 7-1 record, just two wins away from a guaranteed seat in the top 32.  Make no mistake: the pressure was on.

Green chose to have Yuhang begin Game 3, and he did so with Ice Hand; Fire Hand; Compulsory Evacuation Device; Fire Formation – Tenki; and Onslaught of the Fire Kings.  He activated Tenki to search his Deck for Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Bear, then Set Compulsory.

Green Summoned Madolche Messengelato for a quick attack, sneaking in 1600 Battle Damage.  He Set three cards to his back row.

Li drew Fire King High Avatar Garunix and Special Summoned another copy from his Deck with Onslaught.  He Normal Summoned Bear, gave up his Tenki to destroy Messengelato, and when Li attacked with the Bear Green banished it with Dimensional Prison.  That left Li free to attack with Garunix.  Garunix was destroyed in the End Phase by Onslaught.

Green banished the Garunix with D.D. Crow next turn before Li could revive it, and Green followed up with Madolche Hootcake, banishing Crow to Special Summon Madolche Messengelato from his Deck.  He searched Madolche Ticket, activated it, and made direct attacks for 3100 Battle Damage total.  Li was down to 3300 Life Points.  Green had 5300 left.

Li drew Solemn Warning  and Normal Summoned Ice Hand, ramming it at Madolche Hootcake.  Green punted it away with Compulsory Evacuation Device: if he could just keep Li off the field for another turn he could potentially take the game off one more Battle Phase.  Li ended.

Green targeted for Hootcake’s effect again, and Li blasted the Hootcake with Solemn Warning.  That triggered Madolche Ticket, returning Hootcake to Green’s Deck and letting him get another Anjelly.  He used that to bring out another Hootcake, attacked with Messengelato, and it was all over!
