Round 9 Feature Match: Billy Brake Versus Irvin Breton
For our Feature Match this round we have two-time YCS Champion Billy Brake battling with 60 Card Control Deck! He’s playing Shaddolls, Burning Abyss, and Artifacts and uses cards like Kuribandit and The Beginning of the End to gain a ton of advantage and take over the Duel. His opponent, Irvin Breton, is Dueling with a Satellarknight Artifact variant, a very popular choice today. Can Brake’s crazy strategy come out on top? Or will the consistency of Satellarknight put Brake on too fast of a clock?
Brake rolled a 6 to Breton’s 7, Breton chose to go first.
Duel One
Breton started things off with Reinforcement of the Army to add Satellarknight Deneb to his hand, then Normal Summoned the Deneb to add Satellarknight Altair. He Set 3 back row and passed to Brake.
Brake opened with Shaddoll Dragon, Tour Guide From the Underworld, Vanity’s Emptiness, Trap Stun, Sinister Shadow Games, and drew Mathematician for turn. Brake Summoned Mathematician and tried to activate its effect but Breton responded with Breakthrough Skill! Unphased, Brake Set all 3 of his traps and ended his turn.
Breton drew and considered his options, then Normal Summon Satellarknight Unukalhai and used its effect to send Satellarknight Deneb to his Graveyard. Unukalhai made an attack over Mathematician,Brake got a Kuribandit off of the draw from Mathematician. After an attack with Deneb, Brake fell to 6200 Life Points. Breton Set one last back row and tried to end his turn, but Brake flipped Sinister Shadow Games during the End Phase to send Shaddoll Squamata to his Graveyard. Squamata’s effect triggered and sent Shaddoll Dragon to the Graveyard. William targeted one of the older Set back row and hit Artifact Sanctum. Sanctum triggered when it hit the Graveyard and Breton got to destroy one of Brake’s Set cards: Vanity’s Emptiness.
Brake drew another copy of Kuribandit for turn. He entered Main Phase and flipped Trap Stun out of desperation, but Breton had a Call of the Haunted to Special Summon a Satellarknight Deneb from his Graveyard and search Satellarknight Vega. Next, Brake Summoned Tour Guide From the Underworld and used its effect to grab Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss. He overlayed the two Fiends to Summon Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss and used its effect choosing to mill 3 and detaching Graff, sending Vanity’s Emptiness, Shaddoll Hedgehog, and Super Polymerization to his Graveyard. Graff’s effect triggered after that resolved, and Brake got a Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from his Deck in attack mode. He used Dante to attack over Satellarknight Unukalhai and Cir to attacked over Deneb, putting Breton 7200 Life Points. At the end of the Battle Phase, Dante switched to Defense Position and Brake passed his turn.
Breton drew for turn and Normal Summoned Satellarknight Vega, using its effect to Summon Satellarknight Altair, and then used Altair’s effect to Special Summon Satellarknight Deneb from his Graveyard. The Deneb activated in a new Chain to add another copy of Altair. With 4 Satellarknights in play, Breton took a moment to think about what he could do, but opted to go into Battle Phase and attacked with Altair to destroy Brake’s Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss. Cir activated to Special Summon Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from his Graveyard. In Main Phase 2, Breton overlayed Deneb and Vega to Summon Castel, the Skyblaster Musketeer, and used Castel’s effect to return Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss to the Extra Deck. He used his last 2 Satellarknights, Altair and Deneb, to Xyz Summon Abyss Dweller before passing the turn.
Brake drew Foolish Burial and activated it, but Breton didn’t respond with Abyss Dweller! Brake sent Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss, and then Breton tried to Chain Abyss Dweller but it was too late and Brake was able to Summon a Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyssfrom his Deck thanks to Graff. Next, he overlayed the 2 Malebranches for Ghostrick Alucard, using its effect detaching Scarm to destroy Breton’s set Wiretap. Free to attack now, Brake ran over Breton’s Dweller with Alucard and then moved to Main Phase 2, overlaying Downerd Magician over Alucard and Setting Shaddoll Dragon.
Breton drew and thought, then activate Reinforcement of the Army to search Satellarknight Deneb. Summoned an Satellarknight Altair from his hand and used it to Special Summon Satellarknight Vega, which then Special Summoned the Deneb he had just searched from his hand. The Deneb’s effect got him another copy Altair. He moved to Battle Phase after that and declared an attack on Brake’s Set monster with Altair, Shaddoll Dragon flipped and returned Deneb to Breton’s hand. In Main Phase 2, Breton overlayed his Altair and Vega for Number 103: Ragnazero! He Set a back row and moved to End Phase, but during End Phase he used Ragnazero’s effect to destroy the Downerd Magician and draw a card. The Downerd Magician had a Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss as a material though, so Brake was able to Special Summon a Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from his Deck.
Brake top decked Shaddoll Fusion! With a heavy sigh, Breton announced that he didn’t have anything to stop it. He sent Effect Veilerand Shaddoll Squamata to the Graveyard to Fusion Summon El Shaddoll Construct. His Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss destroyed itself when Construct hit play, but he used Construct’s effect to send Shaddoll Hedgehog and Shaddoll Squamata’s effect to send Shaddoll Beast. Beast’s effect got The Beginning of the End! Then Hedgehog let him search a Shaddoll Beast. Next Brake activated The Beginning of the End, banishing Tour Guide From the Underworld, Downerd Magician, Ghostrick Alucard, Scarm, Hedgehog, and drawing Artifact Sanctum, Effect Veiler, Artifact Moralltach. He then tributed his Construct to Set Shaddoll Beast, using Construct’s effect to add back Shaddoll Fusion. He Set Artifact Moralltach and Artifact Sanctum, then during the End Phase Brake got to add Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from his Deck because of Scarm’s effect.
Breton drew to 4 cards in his hand. He declared an attack with Castel, the Skyblaster Musketeer on Brake’s Set Shaddoll Beast, Beast drew Tour Guide From the Underworld and Mathematician, and then discarded Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss. Graff triggers to Special Summon Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss but Breton runs it over with Number 103: Ragnazero. In Main Phase 2, Breton Normal Summons Altair and tries to use it to Special Summon Satellarknight Vega, but gets stopped by Effect Veiler! Breton Sets 2 more cards to his back row and tries to end, but during his End Phase Brake activates Artifact Sanctum to get Artifact Moralltach. When it hits play Brake gestured towards Breton’s Breakthrough Skill in the Graveyard, successfully getting Breton to use it. Brake possibly did this to guarantee an El Shaddoll Winda’s effect to matter.
Brake drew Phoenix Wing Wind Blast for turn. He Normal Summoned Tour Guide From the Underworld and activated its effect, but Breton had Stellarnova Alpha sending his Satellarknight Altair to stop it. Brake followed it up with Shaddoll Fusion, sending Shaddoll Falco and Artifact Moralltach to his Graveyard from his Deck in order to summon El Shaddoll Construct. Brake opted to not use Construct but forgot to use Shaddoll Falco in the process. He is human! Next, he ran over Castel, the Skyblaster Musketeer with Artifact Moralltach and then destroys Number 103: Ragnazero with Construct. Brake Set Phoenix Wing Wind Blast and Mathematician and ends his turn.
Breton Summoned Satellarknight Deneb, but doesn’t have targets to search for. He played Pot of Duality’s revealing Dimensional Prison, Stellarnova Alpha, and Artifact Sanctum. He added Artifact Sanctum and then Set both cards from his hand. During his End Phase, Brake tried to Phoenix Wing Wind Blast one of the new Set cards by discarding Kuribandit, but got stopped by Wiretap.
Brake drew Sinister Shadow Games for turn. He Flip Summoned Mathematician and then Normal Summoned Kuribandit. He declared an attack with Artifact Moralltach to try to get over Satellarknight Deneb, but Breton had Artifact Sanctum to get Moralltach and used it to destroy El Shaddoll Construct. Construct got back Shaddoll Fusion. Moralltach continued the attack to run over Deneb, putting Breton down to 6400 Life Points. In Main Phase 2, Brake overlayed his Kuribandit and Mathematician to Xyz Summon Number 49: Fortune Tune. Fortune Tune would enable Brake to successfully lock up the game if it continued to linger on, and without much time left in the round it was the perfect plan. He passed the turn shortly after.
Breton drew and slammed Soul Charge! He Special Summoned Satellarknight Vega, Satellarknight Unukalhai, and Satellarknight Altair paying 3000 Life Points and going down to 3400. He then used Altair’s effect to Special Summon Satellarknight Deneb from his Graveyard. Breton overlayed an Altair and Deneb for Daigusto Emeral, and used the Emeral’s effect to shuffle back all three of his Altair’s to make his Deck dense with threats again, he also got draw out of it. Breton overlayed Unukalhai and Vega for Number 101: Silent Honor ARK, using its effect to take Brake’s Artifact Moralltach as an Xyz Material. He then tried to end his turn, but Brake had Sinister Shadow Games during the End Phase to Special Summon Shaddoll Falco face-down.
Brake drew Phoenix Wing Wind Blast, but got Mind Crushed during the Draw Phase to strip him off his Shaddoll Fusion. During the Standby Phase he gained 500 Life Points from Number 49: Fortune Tune, then he Set the Wind Blast and ended his turn.
Breton drew and then used Daigusto Emeral’s effect to shuffle back Abyss Dweller, Castel, the Skyblaster Musketeer, and Satellarknight Deneb to draw a card putting him at 3 in hand. He attacked with Artifact Moralltach, Number 101: Silent Honor ARK, and Daigusto Emeral into Fortune Tune. Fortune Tune’s effect activated, putting itself back into the Extra Deck and shuffling Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss and Shaddoll Hedgehog into Brake’s Main Deck. Breton then Summoned Satellarknight Altair, Special Summoning Deneb, and grabbing another Altair from his Deck. He overlayed his Altair and Deneb for Diamond Dire Wolf, then used its effect to destroy the Set Shaddoll Falco which simply Special Summoned itself back face-down. He Set a back row and ended.
Brake drew Karma Cut and shook his head a little. He thought for a moment but then just passed the turn back.
Breton drew for turn but moved to Battle Phase fairly quickly, and declared an attack with Daigusto Emeral on Brake’s set Shaddoll Falco which then used its flip effect to Special Summon El Shaddoll Construct face-down. In Main Phase 2, Breton summoned Satellarknight Altair and used its effect to Special Summon Satellarknight Unukalhai. He then overlayed the 2 Satellarknights for Cairngorgon, Antiluminescent Knight and Set another back row before passing.
Brake drew Effect Veiler and contemplated, but then just Set his in hand Karma Cut. At this point the field had basically become stalled, so as long as Brake could keep defending himself he would eventually win the Duel. He ended his turn.
Breton drew, Set a back row and ended.
Brake drew Phoenix Wing Wind Blast and passed back.
Breton drew and passed.
Brake drew Mathematician and passed.
Breton drew and passed.
Brake drew Breakthrough Skill, Set it and passed.
Breton drew and passed once again.
Brake drew a second copy of Breakthrough Skill and passed with a full back row.
Breton drew, now to five cards, and ended.
Brake drew Shaddoll Hedgehog and passed.
Breton drew to 6 and ended.
Brake drew Sinister Shadow Games and ended.
Breton now drew to 7 cards in hand with a full back row and 4 monsters in play. He flipped a face-down Reinforcement of the Army adding Satellarknight Deneb, and then time was called in the round. The Duel stood at Breton’s 3400 to Brake’s 6600. Breton Summoned the Deneb, Set a 5th back row and passed.
Brake drew Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss on the first turn of time. He Set Mathematician and ended his turn.
Breton drew and entered the second turn of time. He declared an attack with Satellarknight Deneb on Brake’s Set monster, destroying the Mathematician and getting Brake an Artifact Sanctumfrom the Mathematician’s draw effect. In Main Phase 2, Breton activated Mind Crush and named Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss. Brake was forced to discard his Cir but Special Summoned Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from its effect. Scarm destroyed itself because Brake still controlled the Set El Shaddoll Construct. Breton then activated Pot of Duality to add Compulsory Evacuation Device over Double Cyclone, Mind Crush. After setting the Compulsory Evacuation Device, he tried to end, but Brake announced that he would activate Phoenix Wing Wind Blast still in Main Phase 2 targeting the newly set card. Breton activated Stellarnova Alpha in response, sending his Deneb and negating the Wind Blast. He set another card to his back row but once again when he tried to end, Brake Phoenix Wing Wind Blasted the Compulsory. Breton responded with Cairngorgon, Antiluminescent Knight’s effect trying to switch the target, but lost out to Breakthrough Skill! Compulsory finally hit the top of the Deck, guaranteeing Brake the extra turn he needed to win the Duel.
Brake drew Shaddoll Fusion on the third turn of time, Set Breakthrough Skill and ended his turn.
Breton drew Compulsory the fourth turn of time which will be his final turn. He activates Call of the Haunted to Special Summon Satellarknight Altair, but then could only Set Compulsory Evacuation Device and end.
Brake drew Trap Stun on the last turn of time, and simply ended because Life Points stood at Breton’s 3400 to Brake’s 6600.
Because Duel One went to time, the match would be deciding on just that result. Breton’s mistakes cost him the Duel, whereas Brake realizing this guaranteed his victory.
Billy Brake moves on with a 7-1-1 record, with the possibility of being the first Duelist to ever pilot a 60 card Deck to a top cut finish!
