Round 2 Feature Match: Kwang Jae Lee versus Andrew Carlson

Our Feature Match this Round poses two pretty interesting Decks against each other, with both at 1-0 they are hoping to continue their success. Kjwang Jae Lee is using a mash up between Burning Abyss and Agents, finding synergy in Monsters like Chaos Sorcerer as well as the advantage that Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss filling his Graveyard for Master Hyperion and Archlord Kristya. He is even using Mask Change II for access to both Masked HERO Dark Law and Masked HERO Koga! His opponent, Andrew Carlson, is battling with a T.G. Madolche Deck, with sweet tech like Construction Train Signal Red. Which innovative approach will prove to be victorious?

Lee won the roll and chose to go first.

Duel One:

Lee opened with a hand of Bottomless Trap Hole, Soul Charge, Raigeki, Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss, Mask Change II. He Set Bottomless Trap Hole along with Mask Change II, Normal Summoned Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss and ended his turn.

Carlson activated Madolche Ticket, then Normal Summoned Madolche Magileine and used its effect to add Madolche Mewfeuille to his hand. When he declared an attack on Lee’s Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss, Lee used Mask Change II discarding Soul Charge to change his Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss into Masked HERO Dark Law! Carlson ended without being able to do much else, letting Lee search Tour Guide from the Underworld during the End Phase with Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss’s effect.

Lee drew Master Hyperion for turn. He Normal Summoned Tour Guide from the Underworld and used its effect to Special Summon Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from his Deck, then overlayed both his Monsters for Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss! He used its effect sending Call of the Haunted, The Agent of Mystery – Earth and Archlord Kristya to his Graveyard. He declared an attack over Madolche Magileine with Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss, but when he tried to attack directly Carlsonhad Construction Train Signal Red to stop the Masked HERO Dark Law. During the End Phase, Lee added another copy of Tour Guide from the Underworld via the effect of Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss.

Carlson drew to five cards in hand and considered his options. He entered his Main Phase 1, then used Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Lee’s Set Bottomless Trap Hole. He then Normal Summoned Madolche Mewfeuille and used its effect to Special Summon Madolche Anjelly from his hand. He then overlayed the Mewfeuille with his Construction Train Signal Red to Xyz Summon Number 17: Leviathan Dragon! He used its effect to pump its own ATK, then attacked over Masked HERO Dark Law. In Main Phase 2 he used Madolche Anjelly to Special Summon Madolche Hootcake from his Deck, then ended his turn.

Lee drew Vanity’s Emptiness for turn. He used his on field Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss to pump its ATK and fill his Graveyard with some Agents, then Normal Summoned Tour Guide from the Underworld from his hand to Special Summon Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss and overlay for a second copy of Dante. He used the new copy to fill his Graveyard with even more Agents, and Special Summoned Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from his Deck via Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss. He Special Summoned Master Hyperion by banishing The Agent of Mystery – Earth from his Graveyard, which then caused Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss to destroy itself, banishing the Madolche Hootcake with its effect. He then used Hyperion, banishing another copy of Earth, to destroy the opposing Number 17: Leviathan Dragon. With two both Dante along with Hyperion, Lee had enough damage to win the Duel!

An intense game one for such unique Decks, both showing how powerful they can be; can Madolche be able to prove its stuff and make the comeback?

After they were done shuffling, Carlson chose to go first.

Duel Two:

Lee opened with a hand of Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss, Raigeki, Vanity’s Emptiness, Effect Veiler, and Mystic Shine Ball. He Set the Shine Ball along with Vanity’s Emptiness before ending.

Carlson started his turn with ‘Madolche Ticket, then Normal Summoned Madolche Magileine but when he tried to use its effect Lee had Effect Veiler. Carlson Set a card to his back row before ending.

Lee drew Call of the Haunted for turn and contemplated for a moment. He Set Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss along with the Call of the Haunted.

Carlson Set a Monster as well and ended.

Lee drew Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss and though for a bit again, but without a good play simply Set Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss and ended.

Carlson drew and Normal Summoned T.G. Striker, Synchroing with Madolche Magileine for Naturia Barkion! He then activated Double Summon, Normal Summoning Madolche Hootcake off of the additional Summon and activated its effect, banishing Madolche Magileine from his Graveyard to Special Summon Madolche Anjelly from his Deck. He then used Anjelly, tributing itself, to Special Summon Madolche Messengelato from his Deck which added Madolche Chateau to his hand. He activated Chateau, shuffling the Anjelly in his Graveyard back to his Deck which then triggered Madolche Ticket which added Madolche Anjelly to his hand. He then Flip Summoned his Set T.G. Warwolf and overlayed with his Madolche Hootcake for Leviair, the Sea Dragon which then Special Summoned Madolche Magileine. He overlayed Magileine along with Madolche Messengelato to Xyz Summon Madolche Queen Tiaramisu, using its effect to spin back both of Lee’s back row. He went to Battle Phase next, activating Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror and declaring attacks on the Set Mystic Shine Ball and Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss, putting Lee down to 6200 Life Points.

Lee drew Maxx “C”, activate Raigeki to clear the board, and ended without any further action.

Carlson Normal Summoned Madolche Anjelly, used its effect to Special Summon Madolche Hootcake which prompted Lee to activate Maxx “C”, drawing Archlord Kristya. Carlson simply attacked with the Madolche Hootcake and ended not wanting to give Lee any additional cards.

Lee drew Tour Guide from the Underworld but with Carlson having Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror on the Field things were not looking too good. He conceded realizing that the Madolche Hootcake would generate enough damage the following turn.

On the back of Naturia Barkion, Carlson manages to completely dominate the second Duel. There’s no telling what will happen in Duel three!

Lee chose to go first in the final Duel.

Duel Three

Lee opened with a hand of Effect Veiler, Bottomless Trap Hole, Mask Change II, Vanity’s Emptiness, and Fairy Wind. He Set his three traps before ending.

Carlson drew and Normal Summoned Madolche Mewfeuille, but when he tried to use its effect Lee used Effect Veiler to stop it. Carlson simply attacked and passed back.

Lee drew Tour Guide from the Underworld! He Normal Summoned it Special Summoning Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from his Deck, then overlayed for Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss. He used Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss’s effect, detaching Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss, to send a few Fairies including two Agents to his Graveyard. Graff activated, Special Summoning Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from his Deck. When he attacked the Madolche Mewfeuille, Carlson tried to activate Construction Train Signal Red but Lee responded with Vanity’s Emptiness! The Dante attacked over the Madolche Mewfeuille, and in Main Phase 2 Lee Set Mask Change II before ending.

Carlson drew and activated Mystical Space Typhoon, destroying Lee’s Set Fairy Wind which caused Vanity’s Emptiness to destroy itself. Carlson Normal Summoned Madolche Mewfeuille, using it to Special Summon Madolche Anjelly from his hand. He then used Madolche Anjelly to tribute itself and Special Summon Madolche Hootcake from his Deck, but Lee had Bottomless Trap Hole to banish the Hootcake! Carlson had three cards left in hand and ended before doing anything else.

Lee drew Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss for turn, then used Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss to send Honest, Maxx “C”, and Mystic Shine Ball to his Graveyard. He went to his Extra Deck next to consider his options, putting Masked HERO Dark Law to the front with a loud snap. He switched Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss to Attack Mode and then declared an attack on Madolche Mewfeuille with Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss, but Carlson used Construction Train Signal Red to block the attack. When Lee tried to attack over Madolche Mewfeuille with Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss, Carlson had another Construction Train Signal Red to stop that attack as well! Still during his Battle Phase, Lee Flipped his Set Mask Change II discarding Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss to upgrade his Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss into Masked HERO Dark Law! Then Graff triggered, Special Summoning a Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from Lee’s Deck which destroyed itself. Lee went to Main Phase 2, overlayed Downerd Magician on top of Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss and searched for Tour Guide from the Underworld during the End Phase with Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss.

Carlson drew to two cards, then overlayed both his Construction Train Signal Reds for Number 17: Leviathan Dragon. He Normal Summoned Madolche Hootcake, banishing a Construction Train Signal Red from his Graveyard, in order to Special Summon Madolche Messengelato from his Deck which activated its effect to add Madolche Chateau to his hand, but Lee got to use the effect of his Masked HERO Dark Law! He randomly banished Madolche Magileine from Carlson’s hand, missing Madolche Chateau. Carlson activated Madolche Chateau next, then overlayed Madolche Mewfeuille with Madolche Hootcake for Leviaira the Sea Dragon using its effect to Special Summon Madolche Anjelly. He went to Battle Phase, declaring an attack over Number 17: Leviathan Dragon over the Masked HERO Dark Law. He went to Main Phase 2 next, then overlayed Madolche Messengelato and Madolche Anjelly for Castel, the Skyblaster Musketeer. He used its effect to spin away the Downerd Magician, letting Lee add Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss back from his Graveyard because of the Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss that was an Xyz Material. Carlson ended his turn with an impressive Field.

Lee drew Archlord Kristya for turn, adding it to his hand of Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss and Tour Guide from the Underworld. He Normal Summoned Tour Guide from the Underworld, using its effect to Special Summon Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from his Deck, then overlayed the two Fiends for Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss. He used Dante’s effect to send Mystical Space Typhoon, Call of the Haunted, and The Agent of Miracles – Jupiter to his Graveyard by detaching Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss, which then caused Cir to activate Special Summoning Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from his Graveyard. He followed through by Special Summoning Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss next, but once it hit the board he took a minute to assess the whole situation before choosing what Extra Deck Monster to make. He overlayed them for Leviair the Sea Dragon, using its effect to Special Summon Madolche Hootcake. He crashed his whole board into Carlson’s getting using Dante’s effect to add back Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss when it was destroyed. He passed afterwards.

With no cards in hand, Carlson drew Madolche Magileine! He Normal Summoned it and used its effect to add Madolche Anjelly to his hand. He declared a direct attack putting Lee to 6000 his own 5000 Life Points before ending.

Lee drew Chaos Sorcerer for turn, and went to his Graveyard to banish The Agent of Mystery – Earth along with Tour Guide from the Underworld to Special Summon the mighty Spellcaster. He Normal Summoned Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss next, which destroyed itself so Lee could Special Summon Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss from his Graveyard. He used Sorcerer to banish the opposing Madolche Magileine, then declared a direct attack with the Dante putting Carlson; In Main Phase 2 he overlayed Downerd Magician on top of Dante and ended.

Carlson drew, Normal Summoned Madolche Anjelly and used its effect to Special Summon Madolche Hootcake from his Deck in Defense Mode. He used the Hootcake’s effect, banishing Anjelly, to Special Summon Madolche Messengelato from his Deck to add Madolche Ticket to his hand. He immediately activated the Ticket, and surveyed the Field before ending.

Lee drew Snatch Steal for turn! After a moment to make sure that he had his play right, he activated Snatch Steal to take control of Carlson’s Madolche Messengelato.He banished the Madolche Hootcake with Chaos Sorcerer, then declared direct attacks with Madolche Messengelato and Downerd Magician to put Carlson down to 600 Life Points. The Downerd Magician activated, detaching Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss which let Lee add back Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss to his hand. In Main Phase 2 he tributed away both Madolche Messengelato and Downerd Magician for Archlord Kristya!

Carlson drew, Set a Monster, and ended his turn.

Lee drew for turn and went straight to battle, and after attacking with Chaos Sorcerer over a Set T.G. Striker he swung directly with Archlord Kristya for game!

After a huge back and forth with both players pulling out all the stops, Kwang Jae Lee manages to take the third Duel and the match moving on 2-0!
