Round 8 Feature Match: Matthew Chasteen versus Brandon Rainey
Matthew Chasteen and Brandon Rainey are two of the last four undefeated Duelists in the tournament. Matthew Chasteen from Nashville, Tennessee is using a Burning Abyss Deck featuring the brand new Mask Change II Spell Card, which transforms his DARK monsters into Masked HERO Dark Law. Columbia, South Carolina’s Brandon Rainey is using a Qliphort Deck that activates Storm to destroy his own copies of Saqlifice and the cards in his Pendulum Zones in order to set up for massive Pendulum Summons! Burning Abyss versus Qliphorts has become one of the most typical match-ups of the weekend, and these two Duelists are about to play out the match-up once more. This time, they’re Dueling for the opportunity to start out Day 2 as one of the last two undefeated Duelists. It’s time to Duel!
Duel One
Chasteen won the die roll and opted to go first. He opened up with Foolish Burial, Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss, Tour Guide From the Underworld, and 2 copies of Mask Change II.
Chasteen Summoned Tour Guide From the Underworld and activated its effect to Special Summon Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from his Deck and then combined Tour Guide with Graff to Xyz Summon Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss in Defense Position. He detached Graff and sent Vanity’s Emptiness, Rubic, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss, and Fire Lake of the Burning Abyss from his Deck to his Graveyard with Dante’s effect. He used Graff’s effect to Special Summon Cir from his Deck in Attack Position and then Special Summoned Farfa from his hand. Next, he combined Farfa with Cir to Xyz Summon Dante in Defense Position and detached Cir to send Scarm, Tour Guide, and Snatch Steal from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard with Dante’s effect. He Special Summoned Graff from his Graveyard with Cir’s effect and then Set Mask Change II. He added Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from his Deck to his hand with the effect of Scarm in his End Phase.
Rainey activated Summoner’s Art and Chasteen Chained Mask Change II! He discarded Cir to transform his Graff into Masked Hero DARK Law. Rainey added Qliphort Scout from his Deck to his hand with Summoner’s Art, triggering Dark Law’s effect to banish Performapal Trampolynx from Rainey’s hand. Next, Chasteen Special Summoned Scarm from his Graveyard with Cir’s effect, and Scarm self-destructed since Dark Law was on the field. Graff Special Summoned Rubic from Chasteen’s Deck, and Rubic self-destructed as well. Rainey activated Raigeki to clear the field, and Chasteen added Rubic, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss and Fire Lake of the Burning Abyss from his Graveyard to his hand with his Dantes’ effects. Rainey placed Qliphort Scout in his Pendulum Zone next, and paid 800 Life Points to add Saqlifice from his Deck to his hand with its effect. He Set 2 copies of Saqlifice and then activated Storm to destroy both of his 2 copies of Saqlifice and his face-up Qliphort Scout. He added Qliphort Scout and Qliphort Carrier from his Deck to his hand with the effects of his Saqlifices and then activated his Qliphort Scout. Next, he paid 800 Life Points to use his Scout’s effect and add Qliphort Disk from his Deck to his hand. He put Qliphort Carrier in the Pendulum Zone next, and then Pendulum Summoned Qliphort Scout and Qliphort Helix. Next, he Tributed both of them to Summon Qliphort Disk and Special Summoned 2 copies of Qliphort Carrier from his Deck in Attack Position. Disk and both Carriers attacked directly, dropping Chasteen down to 700 Life Points. In Rainey’s End Phase, Chasteen added Tour Guide From the Underworld from his Deck to his hand with Scarm’s effect.
Chasteen Summoned Tour Guide From the Underworld and activated its effect to Special Summon Cir from his Deck. He combined Tour Guide with Cir to Xyz Summon Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss in Defense Position and then detached Cir from Dante to activate Dante’s effect and send the top card of his Deck – Fire Lake of the Burning Abyss – to his Graveyard. Next, he used Cir’s effect to Special Summon Scarm from his Graveyard. He Special Summoned Rubic from his hand next, and Tuned it with Scarm to Synchro Summon Virgil, Rock Star of the Burning Abyss. He activated Virgil’s effect by discarding Graff to shuffle Qliphort Scout back into Rainey’s Deck and then used his Graff’s effect to Special Summon Scarm from his Deck in Defense Position. He Set Mask Change II and Fire Lake of the Burning Abyss before entering his End Phase and adding Graff to his hand with Scarm’s effect.
Rainey attacked Virgil with his Qliphort Disk, destroying Virgil and dropping Chasteen down to 100 Life Points. Chasteen drew Rubic from his Deck with Virgil’s effect.
Chasteen drew Allure of Darkness and activated it to draw Mystical Space Typhoon and Enemy Controller. He banished Rubic from his hand with the effect of Allure of Darkness and then Tributed Dante to activate Enemy Controller and take control of Qliphort Disk, prompting Rainey to concede.

Duel Two
Rainey started off Duel 2 by playing Qliphort Scout in his Pendulum Zone. He paid 800 Life Points to activate its effect and add Qliphort Carrier to his hand. He Normal Summoned his Carrier and then Set 3 cards to his back row before passing.
Chasteen opened up with Allure of Darkness, Dark Hole, 2 copies of Enemy Controller, and 2 copies of Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss. He activated Allure of Darkness to draw Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss and Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss and then banish Graff from his hand. Next, he tried to Special Summon Scarm from his hand; but Rainey flipped Vanity’s Emptiness to prevent the Special Summon! Chasteen Set Scarm and Enemy Controller before ending his turn.
Rainey paid 800 Life Points to activate his Scout’s effect and add another Qliphort Carrier from his Deck to his hand. He Tributed his on-field Carrier to Summon the Carrier in his hand, and then used his Carrier’s effect to return Chasteen’s face-down Scarm to his hand. Rainey attacked directly for 2400 points of damage and then passed.
Chasteen drew Mystical Space Typhoon and then Set Scarm face-down.
Rainey paid another 800 Life Points to activate Scout’s effect and added another Carrier to his hand. He Tributed his Carrier to Summon the one in his hand, and Chasteen flipped Enemy Controller to Tribute Scarm and take control of Carrier. Rainey Chained Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror to Scarm’s effect in the End Phase.
Chasteen activated Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror, and Vanity’s Emptiness went down with it. He Summoned Tour Guide From the Underworld next, but Rainey negated its effect with Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror. Chasteen Set a card to his back row and passed.
Rainey paid another 800 Life Points to activate his Scout’s effect and add Qliphort Stealth from his Deck to his hand. He activated another Scout next, and paid another 800 Life Points to add Saqlifice to his hand. He equipped Saqlifice to his Carrier and Chasteen flipped Enemy Controller to take control of the Carrier before giving it back to Rainey in the End Phase.
Chasteen activated Dark Hole to destroy Carrier and send it to the Extra Deck, while Saqlifice went to the Graveyard. Rainey added Qliphort Helix from his Deck to his hand with the effect of Saqlifice. Next, Chasteen Special Summoned Cir from his hand, and Rainey Chained Maxx “C” to draw a card. Chasteen Summoned Graff next, and combined his monsters to Xyz Summon Number 30: Acid Golem. He attacked directly with Number 30: Acid Golem, dropping Rainey down to 1000 Life Points.
Rainey activated Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy his own Scout in his Pendulum Zone and then played Performapal Trampolynx. He searched for Apoqliphort Towers by paying 800 Life Points with his Scout’s effect, and moments later Pendulum Summoned 4 monsters to the field. He Tributed 3 of them to Summon Apoqliphort Towers, and Chasteen quickly realized he was defeated.

Duel Three
Chasteen opened up Duel 3 with Mystical Space Typhoon, Raigeki, Mask Change II, Rubic, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss, and Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss. He Normal Summoned Graff to the field and then Special Summoned Rubic. He combined Graff with Rubic to Xyz Summon Dante and then detached Graff to send Tour Guide From the Underworld, Foolish Burial, and Enemy Controller from the top of his Deck to his Graveyard with Dante’s effect. He Special Summoned Scarm from his Deck with Graff’s effect. Chasteen Set Mystical Space Typhoon and Mask Change II before ending his turn.
Rainey Set 2 cards to his back row and then activated Storm! Chasteen Chained Mask Change II to transform his Graff into Masked HERO Dark Law by discarding Raigeki. Storm destroyed Rainey’s own face-down Mystical Space Typhoon and Storm, along with Chasteen’s Mystical Space Typhoon. Rainey activated Summoner’s Art to add Qliphort Scout to his hand next, and Dark Law’s effect kicked in to banish Qliphort Carrier from Rainey’s hand. Rainey activated Qliphort Scout and then used its effect to add Saqlifice to his hand by paying 800 Life Points. He Normal Summoned Qliphort Helix next, and equipped it with Saqlifice before ending his turn.
Chasteen Summoned Tour Guide From the Underworld next turn and activated its effect to Special Summon Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from his Deck. He combined Tour Guide with Cir to Xyz Summon Number 20: Giga-Brilliant and then detached Cir from Giga-Brilliant to increase the ATK of his monster. He Special Summoned Scarm from his Graveyard with Cir’s effect, and Scarm self-destructed. Next, Chasteen detached an Xyz Material from Dante and sent the top 3 cards of his Deck to his Graveyard to increase his monsters’ ATK. Chasteen attacked Helix with his monsters, lowering Rainey’s Life Points down to 5900. Chasteen upgraded his Dante into Downerd Magician in Main Phase 2 and added Tour Guide From the Underworld from his Deck to his hand in the End Phase with Scarm’s effect.
Rainey drew another Saqlifice and activated it to increase his monster’s ATK. He attacked Giga-Brilliant to destroy it in battle with his Helix.
Chasteen activated Allure of Darkness next turn and drew Mystical Space Typhoon and Fairy Wind from his Deck, banishing Rubic from his hand. He Set both and then passed his turn.
Rainey drew a card and Chasteen activated Fairy Wind in his Draw Phase to destroy both copies of Saqlifice and the Qliphort Scout! All 3 of them were banished due to Dark Law’s effect. Rainey Normal Summoned Carrier next, and then combined it with his Helix to Xyz Summon Number 103: Ragnazero! He detached Helix to destroy Dark Law and draw a card, and then attacked Downerd Magician to destroy it. Chasteen used the effect of his Dante that was attached to his Magician as an Xyz Material to add Fire Lake of the Burning Abyss from his Graveyard to his hand. Rainey Set a Mystical Space Typhoon to his back row before passing his turn, but lost his Mystical Space Typhoon to Chasteen’s own copy of Mystical Space Typhoon in the End Phase.
Chasteen drew Mystical Space Typhoon next turn. He detached Cir from Dante to send the top 3 cards of his Deck to his Graveyard and then switched Dante into Attack Position. He attacked Number 103: Ragnazero with Dante, and Rainey used Ragnazero’s effect to destroy Dante and draw a card. Chasteen added Cir to his hand with Dante’s effect. Chasteen Set Cir, Mystical Space Typhoon, and Fire Lake of the Burning Abyss before ending his turn.
Rainey activated Summoner’s Art to add Qliphort Scout from his Deck to his hand and then activated it. He paid 800 Life Points to try to activate its effect, but Chasteen flipped Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy the Scout and send it to Rainey’s Extra Deck. At this point, time in the round was called! The Duel would end after 5 more complete turns! Rainey attacked Chasteen’s face-down Cir with Ragnazero and Chasteen Special Summoned Dante from his Graveyard with Cir’s effect.
Chasteen drew another copy of Fire Lake of the Burning Abyss and passed.
Rainey drew a card and passed.
Chasteen drew Mask Change II. He Set it along with Fire Lake of the Burning Abyss and then passed his turn.
Rainey drew a card and passed his turn, not realizing that this was his final turn in overtime.
Chasteen drew Scarm. He Summoned it and ended his turn, winning in overtime as a result of being up 6200 Life Points to 4200 Life Points.
