Round 8 Feature Match: Brandon Wong versus Naveen Shankar
Over the course of today we’ve received tons of feature match request forms. So many, in fact, that we haven’t gotten a chance to feature all of the players we want to. Brandon Wong submitted a request form several rounds back saying that his Nekroz Deck could churn out first turn Moulinglacia the Elemental Lord and then overlay it with Nekroz of Valkyrus to make Divine Dragon Knight Felgrand. I really wanted to see that combo go off in a Feature Match! Let’s hope the promise he made holds up in this Match. Naveen Shankar – a bounty duelist who’s defeated some tough players today – won the die roll and opted to go second.
Wong opened with Nekroz Mirror, Nekroz Kaleidoscope, Nekroz of Unicore, Nekroz of Valkyrus, and Shurit, Strategist of Nekroz. He started off with Nekroz Kaleidoscope sending Herald of Arc Light to Ritual Summon Nekroz of Unicore. Herald of Arc Light added a Nekroz of Clausolas to his hand, which he then used to add a Nekroz Cycle to his hand. Next, he used Nekroz Cycle sending Shurit, Strategist of Nekroz to Ritual Summon Nekroz of Valkyrus. Shurit, Strategist of Nekroz added Nekroz of Brionac to his hand, which was then discarded to add Nekroz of Unicore. Then, he used Nekroz Mirror banishing Shurit, Strategist of Nekroz to Ritual Summon Nekroz of Unicore. He Xyz Summoned Lavalval Chain and stacked Moulinglacia the Elemental Lord to the top of his Deck. He then used Nekroz of Valkyrus tributing his two monsters to draw the Moulinglacia and Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands. He Special Summoned Moulinglacia and discarded Book of Eclipse and Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands out of Shankar’s hand! He then Normal Summoned Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands to add Nekroz Cycle to his hand. Afterwards, he Set Cycle and ended his turn.
Shankar fought back by using Reinforcement of the Army to add Shurit, Strategist of Nekroz to his hand. Then he used Nekroz of Clausolas to add Nekroz Cycle to his hand. He used the Cycle discarding Shurit, Strategist of Nekroz to Ritual Summon Nekroz of Clausolas from the Graveyard. Shurit, Strategist of Nekroz added Nekroz of Brionac to his hand. Next, he used Nekroz of Brionac to add Nekroz of Unicore to his hand. Then he used Nekroz Kaleidoscope sending Herald of Arc Light to Ritual Summon Nekroz of Unicore. The Herald of Arc Light searched out another Nekroz of Unicore. He Normal Summoned Bull Blader and attacked Moulinglacia with Bull Blader to destroy it and not take any damage. Nekroz of Unicore attacked over Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands, and he ended his turn.
Wong drew Nekroz of Trishula. He used his in-grave Nekroz Kaleidoscope and Nekroz Cycle to search out a Nekroz Mirror and Nekroz Kaleidoscope. Then he used Nekroz Mirror banishing Nekroz of Brionac and Nekroz of Clausolas to Ritual Summon Nekroz of Trishula! It banished a Nekroz of Unicore on field, Nekroz of Unicore in hand, and Cycle in grave.
Shankar passed.
Wong drew Nekroz of Valkyrus. He switched Nekroz of Trishula to Defense Position and ended his turn.
Shankar passed.
Wong drew Nekroz of Brionac. He discarded it to add Shurit, Strategist of Nekroz to his hand. Then, he used Nekroz Cycle sending Shurit, Strategist of Nekroz to the Graveyard to Special Summon a Nekroz of Valkyrus from the grave. Shurit, Strategist of Nekroz added a Nekroz of Clausolas to Wong’s hand. He switched Nekroz of Trishula to Attack Position, it attacked over Nekroz of Clausolas, and then Nekroz of Valkyrus hit directly for 2900.
Shankar banished a Nekroz Kaleidoscope and Nekroz of Clausolas in the Graveyard to add Nekroz Mirror to his hand. Then he activated it banishing Shurit, Strategist of Nekroz to Ritual Summon a Nekroz of Clausolas in Defense Position.
Wong drew Nekroz Kaleidoscope. He activated Nekroz of Valkyrus to tribute his in-hand Nekroz of Clausolas and Nekroz of Valkyrus to draw Maxx “C” and Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands. He Normal Summoned the latter, getting himself a copy of Nekroz of Unicore from his Deck to his hand. Then he used Nekroz Kaleidoscope to Ritual Summon the Nekroz of Unicore sending a Herald of Arc Light, and that’s all Shankar needed to see to move onto Game 2! Both duelists dove into their Side Decks, both of them obviously having prepared for this matchup beforehand.
Shankar chose to go second. Wong’s opening was two Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands, Reinforcement of the Army, Nekroz Kaleidoscope, and Maxx “C”. He Normal Summoned Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands to add Nekroz of Unicore to his hand. Then he used Nekroz Kaleidoscope to Ritual Summon Nekroz of Unicore sending Herald of Arc Light to the Graveyard. He banished Nekroz Cycle and Nekroz of Clausolas, and Nekroz Kaleidoscope and Nekroz of Unicore, to add Nekroz Mirror and Nekroz Kaleidoscope to his hand. He used Nekroz of Unicore to add back a Nekroz of Valkyrus to his hand, and then Set Cursed Seal of the Forbidden Spell before ending his turn.
Shankar used Nekroz Kaleidoscope, and Wong chained Maxx “C”. He sent Ultimaya Tzolkin to the grave to Ritual Summon out Nekroz of Unicore and Nekroz of Valkyrus. He attacked directly but Nekroz of Valkyrus stopped the Battle Phase. In Main Phase 2 Shankar used Nekroz of Valkyrus to clear his board and draw 2 cards. Next, he discarded Nekroz of Brionac to add Nekroz of Valkyrus to his hand. He followed that up by banishing Nekroz Kaleidoscope and Nekroz of Brionac to search his Deck for another Nekroz Kaleidoscope. Then he ended his turn.
Wong drew Reinforcement of the Army. He Normal Summoned Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands and added Nekroz of Unicore to his hand. Then he used Nekroz Kaleidoscope to Ritual Summon Nekroz of Unicore and Nekroz of Valkyrus using Shooting Quasar Dragon. Wong discarded Nekroz of Brionac to add a Nekroz of Valkyrus to his hand, then Xyz Summoned Daigusto Emeral. He used its effect so shuffle back two Nekroz of Unicore and a Nekroz of Brionac. He drew Nekroz of Clausolas. He discarded it to add Nekroz Mirror to his hand. Then he used the Nekroz Mirror banishing Shurit, Strategist of Nekroz from his Graveyard to Ritual Summon a second Nekroz of Valkyrus. He Xyz Summoned Divine Dragon Knight Felgrand! He entered his Battle Phase and attacked with Divine Dragon Knight Felgrand directly, and then hit with Daigusto Emeral. He Set Nekroz Mirror before ending his turn.
Shankar used Reinforcement of the Army to add Shurit, Strategist of Nekroz to his hand. Then he used Preparation of Rites to add a Nekroz of Unicore from his Deck to his hand. Afterwards, he used Nekroz Kaleidoscope but was met with a Cursed Seal of the Forbidden Spell, preventing him from ever activating Nekroz Kaleidoscope for the rest of the game! Shankar then banished the Nekroz Kaleidoscope and Nekroz of Valkyrus to add Nekroz Cycle to his hand. He used the Cycle discarding Shurit, Strategist of Nekroz to Ritual Summon Nekroz of Unicore, and then added Nekroz of Brionac off of the Shurit, Strategist of Nekroz. Next, he Normal Summoned Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands and added Nekroz of Gungnir. Then he used Reinforcement of the Army to add Nekroz of Clausolas to add Nekroz Mirror. That came down next, banishing a Shurit, Strategist of Nekroz in the grave to Ritual Summon out the Nekroz of Gungnir. He used its effect to destroy Divine Dragon Knight Felgrand. Then he attacked with Nekroz of Gungnir, Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands, and Nekroz of Unicore to drop Wong to 3600 Life Points. He Xyz Summoned Number 80: Rhapsody in Berserk in Defense Position, which he used to banish a Nekroz Mirror and Nekroz Kaleidoscope.
Wong drew Preparation of Rites. He used it to add Nekroz of Brionac to his hand, which he used to add Nekroz of Unicore to his hand, which he used to add Nekroz of Valkyrus back to his hand. The duel stood at 3400 to 3600 in Wong’s favor, and they were into time at this point. Wong passed.
