Round 7 Feature Match: Fred Sutton III versus James Jin-Young Kim
Welcome to Round 7! This Feature Match showcases Tennessee Duelist Fred Sutton III’s very cool Lightsworn-Shaddoll-Infernoid Deck! With Lightsworn and other cards to load the Graveyard, as well as Infernoids and Shaddolls to take advantage of that fact, his strategy is one of the most unique we’ve seen today. He’s up against Burning Abyss, piloted by Toronto’s James Jin-Young Kim. Both Decks seek to take advantage of their Graveyard in very different ways – let’s see who comes out on top!
Duel 1
Sutton won the die roll and chose to play second. Kim began with four to his back row.
Sutton’s hand was Effect Veiler, El Shaddoll Fusion, Infernoid Attondel, Infernoid Onuncu, and Raiden, Hand of the Lightsworn, and Infernoid Patrulea. He played Raiden, and Kim discarded Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss with Phoenix Wing Wind Blast to put Raiden back on top of the Deck. Sutton banished Onuncu to Special Summon Patrulea, destroying Kim’s Set Foolish Burial. In the End Phase, Scarm got Kim his Tour Guide From the Underworld.
Kim played Tour Guide From the Underworld on his turn, and Sutton used Effect Veiler.
Sutton drew Raiden again, and lost it to Kim’s Mind Crush! He had Patrulea destroy Kim’s Vanity’s Emptiness.
Kim played Libic, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss, and it destroyed itself with its effect due to Tour Guide being a non-Burning Abyss monster. Sutton Tributed Patrulea to banish Libic, but that wouldn’t stop its effect. Libic Special Summoned Scarm from Kim’s hand with its effect negated, and Xyz Summoned Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss. Its effect put Solemn Warning, Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss, and Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss in the Graveyard. Cir Special Summoned Scarm from the Graveyard, and Graff Special Summoned another Graff from the Deck. He Xyz Summoned another Dante, but didn’t use its effect. Both Dante attacked directly, leaving Sutton with 4500 Life Points. In the End Phase, Scarm gave Kim a Cir.
Sutton drew another Patrulea. He banished an Infernoid in his Graveyard and hand each to play Attondel, which attacked twice to take out both copies of Dante, and each activated to give Kim a Scarm and a Graff. Then, the Graff that was an Xyz Material Special Summoned Rubic from the Deck.
Kim played Graff and Synchro Summoned Virgil, Rock Star of the Burning Abyss. With Graff’s effect he got Barbar, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss from the Deck, then Special Summoned Scarm from his hand. He used Virgil to get Attondel out of the way, and Sutton conceded with nothing left save him!
Duel 2
Sutton went first this time, with a hand of 2 El Shaddoll Fusion, Infernoid Seitsemas, Shaddoll Beast, and Shaddoll Hedgehog. He played El Shaddoll Fusion, fusing his Shaddolls into El Shaddoll Winda. Beast let him draw Effect Veiler, and Hedgehog searched for Falco. He Set Falco and El Shaddoll Fusion.
Kim Special Summoned Scarm and Normal Summoned Graff, then Set two to his back row.
Sutton drew Raiden, Hand of the Lightsworn. In the Standby Phase, Kim used Fire Lake of the Burning Abyss, Tributing his monsters to target Falco and El Shaddoll Fusion. Sutton Chained El Shaddoll Fusion, fusing Falco with Effect Veiler for El Shaddoll Construct. Graff’s and Construct’s effects triggered: Kim Special Summoned Cir from his Deck, Sutton sent Shaddoll Dragon to the Graveyard. Dragon targeted Kim’s face-down card, and he chained it: Phoenix Wing Wind Blast. Kim discarded Libic to return Winda to the Extra Deck. Sutton Normal Summoned Raiden, sending Infernoid Antra and Infernoid Patrulea to the Graveyard. Raiden destroyed Cir, which revived Libic in Defense Position. Construct attacked Libic, and it Special Summoned Scarm from Kim’s hand. In the End Phase, Raiden sent El Shaddoll Fusion and Infernoid Attondel to the Graveyard. Kim’s Scarm finally activated in the End Phase as well, getting him Tour Guide From the Underworld.
Kim played Tour Guide and Special Summoned Graff from the Deck. He stacked Graff and Scarm for Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss, detaching Graff and sending De-Fusion, Phoenix Wing Wind Blast, and Alich, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss to the Graveyard. Graff Special Summoned Scarm from the Deck, and it self-destructed due to Tour Guide’s presence. Dante took out Raiden in battle. In Main Phase 2, Kim used Dante for Downerd Magician, then searched out Cir with his Scarm’s effect.
Sutton drew Shaddoll Squamata. He banished Antra and Patrulea to Special Summon Seitsemas from his hand. He passed, not wanting to trigger any more Burning Abyss effects.
Kim dropped Mathematician, loading his Graveyard with Absolute King Back Jack! He reordered his next three cards, likely putting a Trap Card on the top to use with Back Jack’s other effect. He stacked Mathematician and Tour Guide for Number 20: Giga-Brilliant, using its effect to pump up his monsters. Downerd attacked Seitsemas, and Sutton chose to Tribute it to banish Libic rather than lose it in battle, since he was still safe from direct attacks with Construct on the field.
Sutton drew Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning! He sent Construct to attack Downerd, and Kim responded with Absolute King Back Jack’s effect! It excavated Karma Cut, and he used it to banish Construct! He discarded Cir for Karma Cut, which revived Scarm. It was destroyed by its Continuous Effect. In Main Phase 2, Envoy of the Beginning came down and banished Giga-Brilliant, then Sutton Set Squamata. At the End Phase, Kim used Scarm to search for Graff.
Kim attacked Envoy with Downerd, losing the battle. That triggered the effects of Dante and Scarm that were attached as Xyz Materials. Dante returned Alich to the hand, and he Special Summoned it. He Normal Summoned Graff and played another Dante, detaching Graff for its effect but only sending some Trap Cards to the Graveyard. Graff’s effect brought Cir to the field.
Sutton drew Needlebug Nest, and Kim flipped Fire Lake of the Burning Abyss! He Tributed Dante and Cir to destroy Squamata and Envoy of the Beginning! Cir revived Dante, and Dante returned Cir to the hand. Squamata sent Falco to the Graveyard, which revived itself, and Sutton Set Needlebug Nest.
Kim played Majesty’s Fiend! It destroyed Falco in battle! He Set one to his back row.
Sutton drew Infernoid Antra. He flipped Needlebug Nest, hitting Breakthrough Skill and three Infernoids! He banished a Seitsemas and an Attondel to revive Seitsemas from the Graveyard, and Kim flipped Torrential Tribute! Seitsemas and Majesty’s Fiend went down. Sutton banished two more Infernoids to bring Attondel from the Graveyard, and it attacked directly. Kim had 5000 Life Points, while Sutton had 7200.
Kim had two cards in his hand. He Special Summoned Barbar, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss and Normal Summoned Cir. He stacked them for Wind-Up Zenmaines, and attacked Attondel. He detached Cir for Zenmaines’s effect, and Cir revived Dante. In Main Phase 2, Kim used Dante to play Downerd Magician, and Zenmaines destroyed Attondel in the End Phase.
Sutton drew Shaddoll Beast, joining his Infernoid Antra as his last two cards. He banished Attondel to play Antra in Defense Position, right as the round time ended. Antra bounced Downerd, and the attached Dante trigger to give Kim a Cir. Sutton Tributed Antra to Set Shaddoll Beast.
Kim used Zenmaines to Xyz Summon Downerd Magician and Set a monster.
Sutton drew Vanity’s Emptiness. He flipped up Beast, drawing Raigeki and Shadoll Core. He discarded Core, and it added El Shaddoll Fusion back to his hand. He played Raigeki, and Kim’s face-down Cir revived Dante, then Barbar banished three Burning Abyss monsters to deal 900 damage. Sutton Set Vanity’s Emptiness and El Shaddoll Fusion.
Kim played Foolish Burial, putting Rubic in the Graveyard. Next, he Tributed Dante for Vanity’s Fiend! Dante added Barbar to Kim’s hand, and Vanity’s Fiend destroyed Shaddoll Beast in battle.
Sutton drew Kuribandit and Set it.
Kim drew and had no way to even the Life Points! This Duel went to Sutton. Since each Duelist had a win with the round over, this Match was declared a Draw!
