Round 8 Feature Match: David Bui Versus Eric Dalton

August 30th, 2015

David Bui and Eric Dalton are two hugely familiar faces here in Toronto. Bui hails from Peterborough up north, and Dalton made the short trip in from Oshawa, a nearby suburb. Both have been competing in the Toronto scene for years, locally respected but still seeking that international breakthrough performance. With live records here in the last Round of Day 1, still in the hunt for the Top 32, this could be a defining weekend for the winner of this Match.

Bui is playing conventional Nekroz, while Dalton is running a 60-card Nekroz variant with Shaddolls. Bui won the roll and opted to play second.

Dalton opened with Senju of the Thousand Hands searching Nekroz of Valkyrus. He activated Nekroz Kaleidoscope to Summon Valkyrus and Nekroz of Unicore sending Shooting Quasar Dragon to the Graveyard. He Tributed Unicore and Senju for Valkyrus’ effect, drawing two cards, then ended.

Bui had Reinforcement of the Army; Nekroz Cycle; Senju of the Thousand Hands; Book of Moon; Nekroz of Decisive Armor; and Exa, Enforcer of the Nekroz. He Summoned Senju, searched Nekroz of Trishula, and searched Shurit, Strategist of the Nekroz with Reinforcement. “Activate Nekroz Cycle.” Dalton Chained Maxx “C”, and got a draw when Bui dropped Shurit for Trishula. Bui used Trishula’s effect to banish Valkyrus from the field, Brionac from Dalton’s hand, and Nekroz Kaleidoscope from his Graveyard!

Bui searched Nekroz of Brionac with Shurit’s effect, then attacked to drop Dalton to 3900 Life Points. He dumped Brionac in Main Phase 2, searched Unicore, and Set Book of Moon.

Dalton drew to four cards and Summoned Great Sorcerer of the Nekroz, attacking to destroy Senju.

Bui drew Nekroz of Unicore and pitched it to get back his Brionac. That got him Nekroz of Clausolas, which searched his Deck for Nekroz Kaleidoscope. He activated that to Summon Unicore, yarding Herald of the Arc Light and using its effect to search Nekroz of Valkyrus. He attacked over Great Sorcerer with Trishula, then attacked with Unicore, dropping Decisive Armor for game!

Eric Dalton leaves himself wide open to Nekroz of Trishula, and David Bui punishes him for it to take an easy win in the first Duel! A surprisingly awkward play from Dalton, who either had no choice, or must be feeling fatigued here in the last Round of Day 1.

Dalton chose to go second, and Bui opened with Nekroz of Decisive Armor; Nekroz Cycle; Nekroz of Valkyrus; Reinforcement of the Army; and Mind Crush. Reinforcement got him Shurit, Strategist of the Nekroz, and he activated Cycle to Tribute it for Nekroz of Valkyrus. Shurit got him Nekroz of Brionac, and he activated its effect to get Great Sorcerer of the Nekroz. He Tributed for Valkyrus, giving up Sorcerer and Valkyrus itself to draw Brionac and Mystical Space Typhoon. Great Sorcerer’s effect got him Nekroz of Unicore. He pitched it to retrieve Nekroz of Valkyrus, then banished Cycle and Brionac to search his Deck for Nekroz Kaleidoscope. He Set Mind Crush.

Dalton Summoned Senju of the Thousand Hands to get Nekroz of Valkyrus from his Deck, then activated Nekroz of Clausolas to search Nekroz Mirror. He Summoned the Valkyrus with Mirror, banishing Clausolas from his Graveyard and Tributing Shaddoll Beast from his hand, drawing a card with Beast’s effect! Clearly some major Side Decking had occurred between Games 1 and 2 on Dalton’s side of the field. He labored over Bui’s face-down. “Why do I feel like you play Mirror Force?” He groaned and Bui chuckled.

“Am I THAT unconventional?” Bui grinned. Dalton attacked, and Bui teased flipping his Mind Crush, declaring “Mirror Force” and sending Dalton’s heart into his throat for a moment. He left the Crush face-down. Bui activated Valkyrus’ effect though, banished Great Sorcerer, and searched his deck for Exa, Enforcer of the Nekroz with Great Sorcerer’s effect.

Dalton Tributed his on-field Senju and in-hand Glow-Up Bulb for Valkyrus’ effect, drawing two cards and Setting two cards to his backrow.

Bui drew Maxx “C” and pitched Brionac for its effect; Dalton Chained Shared Ride. Bui searched Valkyrus, giving Dalton a draw, and ended.

Dalton drew to five cards in hand, with one more Set in his Spell and Trap Card Zone and Valkyrus on the field. He dumped Brionac to search out Shurit, Strategist of the Nekroz, then activated Nekroz Cycle; Bui Chained Mind Crush to discard the Shurit! He revealed Brionac, Nekroz of Trishula, and Shaddoll Squamata, the remains of his hand. He Summoned Squamata and attacked with it, dropping Bui to 6200 Life Points, then attacked with Valkyrus to send his opponent to 3300 LP. He Tributed Trishula and Squamata in Main Phase 2, to draw two cards with Valkyrus, then sent Shaddoll Falco from his Deck to his Graveyard with Squamata, Special Summoning Falco face-down.

Bui drew Nekroz Kaleidoscope and Set a card to his backrow.

Dalton Flip Summoned Shaddoll Falco to bring back Beast, and Bui responded with Maxx “C”, drawing Breakthrough Skill. Dalton Summoned Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands to search his Deck for Cycle. He activated it, Bui Chained Mystical Space Typhoon to target Dalton’s one remaining Set backrow, and Dalton winced, now robbed of his Nekroz of Trishula’s effect. Dalton Chained Book of Moon, the targeted card, and turned his Falco face-down. He Tributed his Manju and Set Shaddoll Beast to revive Trishula, then drew off Beast.

Dalton attacked with Trishula, and Bui blocked with Valkyrus. Dalton Tributed two copies of Hedgehog from his hand in Main Phase 2, drawing two with Valkyrus, and searching his Deck for Shaddoll Squamata. He pitched Brionac to get Nekroz of Valkyrus, then ended.

Bui drew another Valkyrus, now holding Breakthrough Skill; Nekroz of Decisive Armor; Nekroz Mirror; and two Nekroz Kaleidoscopes. He activated Mirror to banish Shurit, Ritual Summoning Decisive Armor and destroying Dalton’s face-down Falco. He attacked, and Dalton blocked with Valkyrus. Bui Set Breakthrough Skill.

Dalton activated Valkyrus’ effect again next turn, Tributing Squamata and Shaddoll Dragon; Bui Chained the targeted Breakthrough Skill on Trishula. He drew a card by sending Shaddoll Beast to his Graveyard off Squamata. He Normal Summoned Mathematician, yarded Peropero Cerperus, and then revived Glow-Up Bulb from the Graveyard with its effect, yarding El Shaddoll Fusion from the top of his Deck. He Tuned Bulb to Mathematician for Herald of the Arc Light, then attacked Decisive Armor with Trishula – Bui dropped another Valkyrus to try and block, banishing Exa, but Dalton Chained Herald’s effect to negate the Valkyrus! Herald’s effect activated; Exa’s effect Chained; and Dalton Chained Maxx “C”. Bui Special Summoned Shurit with Exa’s effect, Dalton drew for Maxx “C”, and he proceeded with the attack, smashing Trishula into Decisive Armor to destroy it with Peropero Cerperus!

Dalton pitched Unicore to get back Nekroz Cycle, activated it for Nekroz of Trishula, and robbed Bui of Shurit, Kaleidoscope from his hand, and a card form his Graveyard. He Set two cards to his backrow and Bui had no outs! With two minutes left in the Round, we were headed to Game 3!

Dalton opened with Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands and searched for Nekroz of Brionac.

Bui had Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands; Nekroz Kaleidoscope; Vanity’s Emptiness; and double Mind Crush! He drew another Nekroz Kaleidoscope, then Summoned Manju to get Nekroz of Unicore. He Summoned it with Kaleidoscope and Herald of the Arc Light, searching with the Herald’s effect to get Nekroz of Brionac as time was called. That got him Nekroz of Valkyrus, and he attacked over Manju with Unicore, then made a direct shot with Manju. He overlaid his monsters in Main Phase 2 to Xyz Summon Tellarknight Ptolemaeus, then Set Emptiness and the two Mind Crushes. He attached another Material to Ptolemaeus in the End Phase.

Turn 1 of time. Dalton drew for his turn and Bui uptraded his Ptolemaeus for Constellar Pleiades. Dalton Summoned Mathematician and sent Shaddoll Hedgehog to his Graveyard, getting Shaddoll Falco. He pitched Nekroz of Brionac to search his Deck for Nekroz of Clausolas, ditching that to get Nekroz Cycle. He activated it and Bui Chained Vanity’s Emptiness – Dalton heaved a sigh; no response. Dalton ended.

Turn 2 of time. Bui drew Great Sorcerer of the Nekroz and attacked with Constellar Pleiades, destroying Mathematician and feeding Dalton a draw. “Your turn, sir.”

Turn 3 of time. Dalton banished Brionac and Cycle from his Graveyard to get another Cycle, then Set a monster. He’d have to find a way to play through Vanity’s Emptiness and double Mind Crush – which he wasn’t aware of – to pull this out of the fire.

Turn 4 of time, Bui’s last turn. Bui drew Reinforcement of the Army and Summoned Great Sorcerer of the Nekroz, attacking with it and running into Peropero Cerperus, which survived. Bui took 300 damage. “That’s not what I wanted,” Bui remarked. He attacked it with Constellar Pleiades and moved to Main Phase 2. He bumped his Vanity’s Emptiness to his hand with Constellar Pleiades, searched for Shurit, Strategist of the Nekroz with Reinforcement of the Army, then Special Summoned Valkyrus with Nekroz Kaleidoscope and Shurit. That got him Nekroz of Brionac with Shurit’s effect, and he activated the effect of Valkyrus, Tributing Pleiades and Great Sorcerer. He drew another Valkyrus and Clausolas. Great Sorcerer’s effect got him Nekroz of Gungnir, and he searched out Trishula with Brionac. He pitched Clausolas to get Nekroz Mirror, then Set two cards to his backrow.

Turn 5, the final turn of the Duel. Dalton Summoned Dance Princess of the Nekroz! Bui flipped Vanity’s Emptiness immediately, and Dalton gave the handshake!

David Bui moves on to Day 2!
